I wouldn't last as long as six months it only took a half a month before I snapped on them for calling me kitty or cat all the time (I hate that nickname) Though I bet if I stopped talking to them my constant headaches may cut down

Since I don't tend to keep track of the news I can't speak for much (get all my info here) but I hope Bioware does get some good publicity cause they kind of deserve it :3

I've gotten them to drop ONE thing ever before but I had to apologize to them first for them acting like a jerk but they really made me feel upset so I just kind of did so just to get the conversation to stop. (I'm not that strong when I'm on the verge of tears or crying) ^^; Plus my other friend seems to like them so I don't want to be rude (that and I have no idea how to block someone over skype^^; )

Do those "friends" add anything positive to your life? Because it sounds like you don't need that kind of drama or harassment from random jerks. Who cares if they think you're "rude?"

Here are Skype blocking instructions just in case http://www.ehow.com/...eone-skype.html :)

I can't tell you what to do, but I wouldn't take it off them.  They should respect your boundaries, and you should feel secure in setting those boundaries.  In private conversations, if they're going out of their way to argue with you, you have every right to block them etc.  And if your other friend is truly a friend, they will understand why you don't wish to speak to the person arguing with you anymore.  Just explain the situation and all should be well.

But this is nothing to do with the Lady Inquisitor... and it's late.  Later than I thought, even.

The friend that pointed me in the direction of this other person is wonderful and I love talking to them they just have bad judgement in others it seems and that person treats them more nicely than me so that could be why they pointed me in that direction in the first place cause to them this person was a nice person, they just weren't that way to me.

Thanks for the instructions on blocking someone, if they continue to act like such a jerk I'll be sure to use it :)

Ugh wish this could quote, it cant so I cant.  :(  Brass and Huldra was to been quoted.

God, this thread has the nicest people! Seriously!

aTigerslunch, idk why you would think you were crossing a line? You're a valued part of this conversation!

HuldraDancer-I'm sure these people have redeeming qualities too since they are your friends (benefit of the doubt that they can't be all bad ;) ) But Nefla that was so nice of you gosh EDIT: and you too Brass_Buckles!!!

...wow its late if I'm feeling this sappy. I practically wrote all of that in sing song voice...oh boy

Wait, what did Ubisoft do wrong?

Well, I think people were fine with them having a male protagonist in singleplayer.  However, in their multiplayer with four different characters, instead of adding a female option or two (and they do have women fans), they made all of these characters male.  Not only male, but similar in appearance.  They then proceded to explain that female characters were a feature that they didn't have time to implement.

A lot of women do not feel that they should be considered a "feature," or something optional to a game, particularly a game with multiplayer, where they may want to use a female avatar.  And I agree with this--at least one of those four guys should have been a lady.  The devs gave a lot of excuses about extra animation and modeling--and yes, they would have had to do extra modeling and extra animation.  BUT, I'm going to point out what David Gaider said about showing the Lady Inquisitor:  BioWare did this because it matters, even if it may, by "conventional wisdom" hurt marketing.  They include female options and female animations for their protagonists, because it matters.  It's extra work and they don't have to do it, but they know it matters.  And it also matters to the female fans of Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed.  The difference is, BioWare cares and UbiSoft does not.

Brass, you also left out that one of their dev's is female too, and think or believe she was the one that said they wont and it was too much work.  A female said this about a female. If I remember it correctly, I may have it wrong, but there is a female in their dev team, not just writing I think. I have to go back and check.

Seems weird they would say that since at least one if not two AC games had that one female protag (I never played it as I don't own a Vita so I couldn't remember her name)

Okay, I can't find Allan's post to quote it, but he had posted a semi-relevant link to something about Pillars of Eternity and the gender roles within the game.  It's brief but it was an interesting read--wondering how they will explore the issue if your character is a woman from an egalitarian region, and she travels with her party (assuming you have one--I know Pillars is based on an older game, but cannot remember which one, sorry) to a region where women are generally in more traditional roles (ignoring the fact that women historically have done the same jobs as men, but didn't get recognized for it).

Hm.

And yes, aTigerslunch, I missed that one.  There have been other games that are rather... sexist, which have also included women developers. There was an indie fighter game recently with scantily clad characters, and there were female devs.  Because some of the devs were women, people loudly proclaimed that its treatment of women and girls (i.e. upskirt/panty shots) was clearly not sexist.  But that is not the case; women can definitely be sexist against women, because it's so deeply ingrained in our culture.

Gregolian, Her name is Aveline from the Liberation, and its HD available on 360 and should be PS3 too.

Brass, your right and also was a link and post about teachers in classrooms where if girls got a little more attention when boys had most they claim it's all wrong.

I would want her as a background too. :D

I should go back to play it but right now I am saving money for potentially a tattoo, car down payment and the like so games are slightly on hold outside of DA:I pre-order for now.

Might try to find a LP of it on YouTube then.

Just some context regarding Pillars of Eternity (since I am ridiculously looking forward to it)

It's an original setting made by a group of developers that have a lineage going back to Black Isle Studios (who worked with BioWare by publishing Baldurs Gate), that have a soft spot for the old school style of gaming such as that has strong characters IMO.

But just to clarify, it's not based on another setting.  I just came across a tweet to that tumblr post and the team has been pretty responsive to initial criticisms of some early armor designs (first iteration of a companion still had some boob plate that they removed pretty quickly) and some of their early concept art included some interesting character designs and did include a woman of colour to boot.  Josh is also a believer in allowing players the flexibility to create the types of characters that they want.

Spoiler

I don't follow the information tooooooooooo closely (I've already decided I'm getting the game, so I mostly have blacked myself out of it) but I'm hoping they are able to help contribute in a positive way as well.  I'm also totally plugging them because I'm a fanboy XD.  But I'll give my thoughts on it once it's released (later this year) if people are interested.

I'd prefer this to stay more focused on DAI, but if people have other examples of things they think seem interesting, or other positive moments, I think it's okay to mention it to bring awareness of things people want to call out.

I had a talk with a friend of mine today about Divinity: Original Sin, and their first shot of their woman protagonist was bikini clad.  He was a bit miffed that that's where they started, but to their credit (IMO) they switched it up which I think is good for a couple of reasons:

  1. It means people are saying "you shouldn't do this"
  2. It means they are taking the feedback to heart

I can't speak for the rest of the game as I haven't played it, but I do appreciate the take away message from something like that.  You can see a before and after shot here:

Spoiler

I don't know the context of why they are holding hands, but the character creation has the player create two characters (customizing appearance I believe) so I imagine that the characters are linked in some way.

I may pick it up and if so, I'll share thoughts.

But yes, enough off topic for me I think <.<

Cheers.

Allan Those two are partners or will be, could be. Thanks for showing Pillars females like that, I was curious about them. Another game that has a female possible protag that is very nice and choice have consequences is Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall. A female can be chosen and the outfits are not sexualized for either gender. Can even play troll and orc in it. The support cast is intriguing as well and the gameplay is fairly similar look appearance of Pillars but based in Europe.

Apperently females in some games are getting better represented. These are good examples to support women I think and not sexualize. Cyberpunk 2077 whenever it comes out, seems to favor practicality as well.

I enjoyed Shadowrun Returns.  Was a fun little romp (Dragonfall DLC is a bit tighter of an experience I found - like they had learned their lessons and didn't have to build an engine at the same time :P)

"snip"

Cheers.

Oh man- thanks for sharing about pillars of eternity- it wasn't even on my radar, but now I'm going to head right over and find out more about it.  I loved what I read about the different societies in the first tumblr link you posted- and, the dwarves, you know how how I feel about dwarves...

Also, while I still think the boob armor in the art for Divinity OS is a little silly- good on the devs for recognizing and changing the first set of female "armor"!  The original concept art is pretty much exactly what I refer to when I say that I find it offensive when I a woman is dressed in useless, revealing armor while her male counterpart/s is/are covered from head to toe in steel and look ready for combat. Actually, I may pick this game up sooner rather than later- "Tactical turn-based combat, you say?  Built in editor and support for modders/ original mission designers?  I'm in!"

I liked Dragonfall a bit more than Deadman's Switch but both awesome games I think. :)

hmmm, in your words Allan does that mean the 4th DA could actually be even more of an improvement than Inquisition.  ;)   Well, by then it would be. :)

I'm not sure about Divinity myself, looks intriguing, does have male or female, set character but at least optional change. Wish WItcher 3 had a cc or option too. :)

uhm.....lost train of thought after mentioning those..

I wouldn't mind if we stuck with Frostbite for at least one more game

(Though I expect to shuffle around to some other projects anyways so I don't even know how things end up falling after we ship)

I am getting the impression that your point in this thread is to shut people up, which is contrary to the entire point of this thread which is to get people to talk.

Sure it's possible that what they would like and what you would like are mutually exclusive, but don't come into a thread where they discuss what they like and tell them that it's all pointless and how they're just trying to force what they want upon you and that there's no point in discussing this.  It's not productive.

So what is the point of discussion. If no one say opposite opinion. Everyone just agree. It's not discussion its different people just repeating same opinion. And you gave great exemplar about Divinity Original sin, armour was change because some people didn't like design, what about people who liked it? Developers was forced to change it because some one didn't like it And from posts I read I get impression what every one who is warrior must be put in armour from toe to head or neck (To see character face is more important the realism). I see post and just express my different opinion.

What would happen if someone created post asking more reviling/sexy armour, would people nicely express different opinion, person most likely would be just flamen and topic locked. Topic was created to ask more feminine armour, pure girl was just flamed as hell. And I don't say to shut up to anyone, everyone have right to say what they want. But don't act surprised if someone wants, exactly opposite you want.

I'm not sure which one of you it is (I'm assuming it is), but there was an interesting tumblr post that I saw some coworkers retweet.  The person's twitter (Ellorgast) points out the frustration that everyone jumped on other studios for lack of women, but nothing real came out of our reveal.

Negative news does seem to sell over positive news it seems.  And during E3 it was quite the hot topic, but how would we go about encouraging more proliferation of "this is the way we want" type of news?  I'll admit the obvious benefits BioWare would have if you went off and campaigned for more exposure for us for doing this, but at the same time in general how do we promote and encourage more positive waves (regardless of what sort of waves we happen to be casting).

That Tumblr post was Lady Nuggins, to answer the question.

And on Monday, I emailed to either the "news tip" or senior editors of Kotaku, Joystiq, and Polygon (those three had the easiest emails/submission forms to find) regarding Lady Inquisitor at E3 and the response it got. I've written press releases before professionally so this was easy for me, and I sent a small summary blurb, offered to provide all info they might seek and direct links to Tweet responses... heck, I figured a headline of "Group of mostly female gamers send BioWare 264 cupcakes in response to Lady Inquisitor at E3" would be an eye-catching one. Also spun the angle of it being a nice bookend to the ME3 ending cupcake drama.

Wall. Of. Silence.

Good/happy news doesn't sell/get clicks. This, I know. But I hoped for at least one bite, a foot in the door to then speak more in length in regards to female representation in gaming and the strides BioWare is making to push the industry forward with that.

Hmmm...

Not done roaring, though. Far from it, I am.

Your arguing over something that is already too prevalent in many games.  Not sure why you want to argue here when there are sooooo many games that does sexualize females.  I never considered Divinity before cause she wasnt taken seriously in a bikini armor to me. Yes, I do like bikini's on women, I am a guy, its natural but I dont and wont play games in that sense. Men have too much, women need some themselves. Witcher 3 will sexualize its women for guys.

Helmets are in the game.

Joan of Arc

These lady's look pretty good and they don't have special armor and look ready for battle, while under the armor could easily pass as men.

Wonder woman with the leather jacket looks pretty awesome thumbs up.
