Could you provide me with a valid reason as to why BioWare should show a female over a male inquisitor in their trailers other than: ''Because.... Female!''

The point of the thread wasn't that they should show a female instead of a male, but rather as well as a male.. As to why, growing your market is important for any business and many women like playing RPGs as women just as men like playing RPGs as men (and vice versa, I'm sure). Not everyone is aware that this is a possibility, and it is unlikely to hurt the sales of one potential audience to include another.

But I'm sure part of it is also "because.. female." Because why not?

Why isn't "because female" a legitimate reason? Can't you play as a female inquisitor? Isn't marketing supposed to be geared at showing off your product to potential consumers?

I'll flip it around and say, can you provide me with a valid reason why BioWare should show a male over a female inquisitor other than 'because male!'?

And if your answer to "why males" is because they're the majority of people who play games, I'll point out that only marketing to men makes it a self-fulfilling prophesy.

First, we don't require a trailer that ONLY shows the female Inquisitor.  We want SOME representation of her in SOME sort of marketing.  That said...

Yes, that valid reason is money.  A trailer is meant to catch the prospective buyer's attention in ~3 minutes.  If the customer wants a relatable protagonist but the marketing doesn't show that aspect at all, they might move on to spend their money on something else.  Flashing a 5 second clip of a female in Inquisitor armor solves the problem.  5 seconds is a tiny blip on the radar when you consider the amount of footage and screenshots shown with the m!Inquisitor.

Or let's say someone happens upon the Dragon Age website to learn more about it before spending $60.  Let's check out the information provided:

becometheinquisitor.jpg

Hmm, become the Inquisitor.  Obviously a man.  Could've shown a man and woman in the exact same armor side by side or shown one of the super rare pieces of female concept art, shown below.

10006988_10152342467604367_4233424176081

Problem solved with a SINGLE picture.

PlayYourWay.jpg

Play your own way.  Here's a male Inquisitor model, plus, read about how you can customize your Inquisitor.  Some might say gender is lumped under appearance, but you can't pretend gender is as irrelevant or frivolous as appearance in a game where gameplay differs based on the gender of your Inquisitor (gender-gated romances is one example). Edit: It also seems really weird that they don't mention the different races.  Like, weird.

WarriorInq.jpg

This is the closest thing to a lady Inquisitor I've seen on the site.  A vaguely feminine face under a helmet on what appears to be a male Inquisitor's body.  The same face is shown on the rogue with an obvious bulge in the groin area.  Correction: There's also the ambiguous Inquisitor on the box art, which is beautiful and I love it.

Check out the gallery of screenshots to get a better understanding of the game.  6 images of obviously male Inquisitors and a couple that are vague because the Inquisitor is just a tiny spec on the screen.

We've been told the male Inquisitor model was created first and the female isn't completed until much later, which I don't like but can understand from a business perspective.  What starts to sting is knowing how easily the problem could be solved (seriously, that "Choose Your Inquisitor" concept art should be prominently displayed, not relegated to a tiny thumbnail buried in the integrated Facebook/Twitter feed).

Yeah it doesn't make sense. They bother having a female protagonist, give her a voice...and then don't market her at all and female gamers are supposed to know they can play as her somehow.

Word of mouth is useful yes but it's not enough to get the info out and of course is the issue that other players aren't new to the series can assume people know they can play as both genders. Choose Your Inquisitor. That pic should be on the main website. Simple but it's enough for potential players to go "wait I can choose my gender? Awesome!"

I can somewhat understand the species omission. I'm guessing that's from back when we weren't supposed to get new species and no one bothered updating the page.

Agreed!  They've said the main marketing push hasn't started yet, but marketing has begun in some form and it's missing opportunities so far.

About the website though, it's a brand new one that was launched a week and a half ago.  It's understandably sparse so far since not a ton of info's been released, but the races seem like a pretty big deal to be left off completely.

I've played enough games with customisable appearances to know better than to assume appearance also means gender. ;)

My two coppers:

I'm a transman and I have played females and males who are heterosexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian, asexual and pansexual. I always find myself close to laughing whenever some young guy in my age range whines that it would feel weird for him to play a woman, when female gamers have been stuck with only males to play for ages. Get over yourselves, dudebros.

So it's okay to complain about it from one viewpoint, but if you flip the argument it's wrong and you're a moron?

It's not a flip of the argument. It would be if there were more equal numbers of male and female protagonists, but that's far from the case.

Yeah it'd be pretty weird to hear a guy complaining about an instance where he has to play a woman... when most of the video games out there only have male protagonists as options. What exactly would a guy in that situation HAVE to complain about?

While I don't personally mind one way or the other, I've gathered that Bioware has garnered a large female fanbase, and while some will say "cause the romance man..." I'd say one big part probably is that they can "finally" play as an awesome female character. And Bioware has done well in regards to adding women in the games. Not just there for you to ogle at. Marketing it seems only natural, and really, I've only played as a female Shepard. The option isn't appealing just to women.

There are certain things I'd love for in games, which I suppose aren't considered to be what male gamers would want. Therefore often left out. I think opening up more for female gamers is a good thing, it'll allow and force the gaming industry to adapt and add diversity to the games. Instead of working only on a stereotypical view of male gamers wants.

So yeah, female version of it could be nice.

My issue with statements like these isn't the request towards more content showing off the female character, but the feeling I am getting its a sinister plot. There could be different production issues for the reason such as they haven't finalized the voice actors for the Female Inquisitor at the time they were working on that video.  To me BioWare has shown that people don't want to have just a male for advertising by trying to make the box art as gender neutral as possible and eventually there will be the marketing that features the female Inquisitor, but the way I am looking at it the longer we wait the more they can show instead of being as secretive as possible.

I wouldn't say it's a sinister plot but I would say there is a pattern of leaving any marketing of female lead characters to the last minute creating the impression they're an afterthought at best. Now don't get me wrong I love the gender neutral box art and I believe that at some point we will probably get something featuring a feminquisitor. I also like that some of the pictures of the inquisitor in the classes section could be gender neutral and on the rare occasion they use a pronoun they say 'he or she'. It's a nice start though it's also very easy to overlook unless you go through the descriptions carefully.

I think really all I'm asking for is some inclusiveness, and an actual trailer with feminquisitor would be brilliant. B)

I would have thought they'd want to market the fact you can choose your gender and race? Isn't that cool? Wouldn't they want to show off a bunch of different Inquisitors you could make? Continuing to not advertise that mechanic is really strange to me.  If I wasn't aware of bioware games and saw the trailer I would have assumed it was another Witcher type rpg where I had to play a dude and would probably pass on it. "But Witcher is fantastic!" I'm sure it is but I look out for gender options in rpg games now.  It's s a big deciding factor for me.

I don't think I understand this sinister plot idea.

A completed female model or voice acting isn't necessary to add a piece of concept art and three words onto the website.  The website is already marketing a customizable protagonist and oodles of m!Inquisitor art has been circulating for months so I don't see the benefit in keeping the knowledge that you can play as a woman a secret.

We've seen many shots (screenshots and video) of Cassandra and Vivienne and one of Sera and Scribe Girl, but the most important woman in the game only exists in ~4 pieces of concept art.  A female model and more than a handful of companion armor sets have been shown off.

Also, after looking around for a long while, i found a mention of the Lady Inquisitor on the website in a statement written by Mark Darrah under news.  "To face this incursion and uncover those behind it will require more than any one man or woman could muster."  STOP SPILLING SECRETS MARK!! ;)

I just find it a tad bit hypocritical to finish off your argument by effectively saying "if it's the same situation I'm complaining about but reversed, you never get to complain ever and you need to get over yourself".
