It's kind of sad that the online games let you play female characters, yet most SP games do not. And I don't play MP games. ![]()

I see everyone's point of perspective of wanting female to be more represented in some way. I guess I just don't care enough about genders. For me a game must peak my interest. If it's got my interest, I'm going to look into information. As I'm not a TV person, I wouldn't even see an advertisment if it was running all the time.
I find 'my' games by browsing 'what's going to be released next in the rpg section' (or any other kind of category I'm currently looking into), then read the description and perhaps check out a few screenshots or trailers if given in the summary.
Next I'd go and check out the homepage. And if by this point it hasn't enchanted me to give it a try, then I either must find it for a bargain price or get it recommended by friends or both.
If it did mangage to get me interested, I'll go for it. And I'm expecting an interesting story and an interesting character. As long as the character is portrayed interesting enough for me, I do not care if I'm playing a man or a woman, even more so if I get to pick my answers.
Customizing is a nice touch thought, as you can make the character 'yours'. I would not want to miss this element in games like this, but given how many other games I play where the party and MC are pre-set...
I guess I'm just caring to little about that kind of PR.
Something I'd much more like to see, is getting the choice of body builts. I'd like to be able to decide myself if my character is all a bulk of obvious muscle, normally built-looking or of slender built. I'm not even going to ask to be able to select age-groups (like young adult , adult, senior) or sizes (short, medium/normal, tall), cause I can see how working all that into dialogues (like people reacting negativly to a young inquisitor in a 'I should pay such a young lad my respects? Pffft' or being a 'senior' inquisitor allowing one to pull the age rank or there being size jokes about him/her) would be too much work. But for aesthetics... I for my part didn't like that my male Hawke mage and rogue were built as tall, broad and bulky as the warrior was. With the female Hawke she was pretty much 'average' built for someone used to fights.

You and me both. I hope replacing body meshes won't be hard.
I actually liked my mage dude!Hawke being bulky, I was tired of the skinny frail mage stereotype. Might have something to do with the fact that I've been strength training (and eating like a gorilla) for five years and people always act surprised when they find out I'm a programmer. Nothing stops mages from getting combat training too. But female protagonists are always skinny, even warriors (qunari and dwarves a little less so, but they still have noodle arms compared to the rest of their bodies).

Remember when Ubisoft said women were too hard to animate? It's somewhat a running gag on tumblr (from what I've seen) Then Ubisoft introduced the new female Templar character, Elise.
I honestly think the option to play as a female should be included since more women are playing video games nowadays, and that's not just mobile games. I find myself picking up the games where I have the option to play as a female character, like the Elder Scrolls, Fallout. etc. Even games with a set protagonist that is female like Tomb Raider and Portal a lot more than I did when I was playing Halo.
Hell, even Halo Reach had the option to play as a female Spartan.

Whats even funnier is that they delayed their game by 2 weeks to do more work! The same guys who couldn't find it in themselves to work harder to make a female MP option needed to delay for more work! HA HA its a riot!

Yet they don't bother to make a female protagonist because "what are women, how do we make them". Having females in the game is good and all that but i want to play as one, dammit.

Wait, Division can be a woman player too?! huh, guess I didnt notice that at all, looked promising but I wasnt considering it till was brought up here that its possible.
EDIT: Also was made aware of another female with something more to see too.
http://forum.bioware...quisitor/page-3
Picture of the femquisitor with a ....bulge.
Is it a female's battle of the bulge's?
Yeah I've only found two referances to her existance as a playable option three if you count the fact no dev on the site states you can't be a girl when people make their own hero mock up but the amount of players even posting women fantasy leads to male is like 1 in 8 or something very tiny. I just don't want to go through the paper work but I did state a few times I'm going to be a woman.
Anyway....the magazine like I said and one dev both state you can be a girl yet no demo shows it soooo I'm worried about how she'll look seeing the woman be played by one was neat it was a step in the right direction but I'd really like to see at least the character creator and they physically show you can toggle to her and have them state your hero can be a heroine too.
I'm still watching the division but if they comeout at anypoint and say they pulled her at the last hour I'm gone cool looking, neat on paper plot and all but sorry guys I'm out. I really have low patience now for lack of fem hero options there is litterally no excuse that hasn't been resaid multiple times that is frankly old. Ubi getting in trouble wasn't the first and won't be the last even if screaming buyers aren't calling them out silent ones aren't buying the products the only problem with being quite and not buying the item that doesn't want you is they think you just like mobile games.
As far as the fem bulge that was another reason I was thrown off that one shot looks bad and yeah it looks like she's got extra equipment so I filed that class and pic under can't tell.

Usually it's hard for us to care that much about issues that don't affect us. For example, I'm a straight woman and I rarely notice if movies/games/tv shows have lesbian characters in them because it's just not on my radar, If other people bring up their feelings about it and if they are feeling marginalized or ignored then I become aware of the issue and notice and want to lend support. A lot of guys don't notice or care if there are good female characters in a game or if they can play a woman for the same reasons, it's just not on their radar because it doesn't affect them. We as female gamers have spent decades having to play the same straight white man and have our own gender fall by the wayside as either background decoration, damsels in distress, or one dimensional sexy babes. When you've been told by the gaming industry your whole life that you don't matter and that your gender is an extra at best then you start to grow extremely weary of it and any game where you can play as a woman is a breath of fresh air.
As far as the doing your research thing on whether or not a game has gender selection, a game has to spark my interest before I will start researching it. It's a game company's job to spark my interest and get me to want to buy their game, it's not my job. Take Shadow of Mordor, a lot of people are excited about it but I have no interest. It looks like it has some good features and I have nothing to play until DA:I comes out, but what would push me over the fence either way: the protagonist, pushed me away from the game. The same generic muscular straight white guy with dark hair and stubble on the typical quest for revenge for his murdered wife and kid. No thanks. If I'd had the option to play as a woman (or a female lead was the set protagonist) I'd have given it a shot.

I miss out on most games because I have two requirement for a game, I have to be able to play female and the game must have a good SP campaign. It can be disappointing seeing games that I might have enjoyed but one of my requirements aren't filled but I know by now that I really wouldn't enjoy playing those games anyway. At this point I'd rather miss out than compromise.
You approach games with a list of requirements? Wow, you will be missing out. A lot. I can understand wanting to play as as woman - not many games feature that. But I don't understand being so rigid about it. Sometimes you have to go into something blind before you discover you like it.

WHY is that such a prevailing theme for these video game protagonists? Like, does the gaming community actually connect with some random stubbly dude who lost his daughter/wife/sister and now has to go avenge them? It's the exact same story getting recycled again, and again, and again. Do people actually want to keep playing this stuff? Why are video games in this rut?
For instance I actually really love Watch Dogs (it's entertaining and has addictive elements to it like... pokemon), but it's literally the exact same boring premise yet again. What gives?

For me, it opens up new opportunities, which is why I like to stay open minded on this. If I predetermine stuff, I miss out. Being flexible has allowed me to enjoy a greater library of games. If you insist on placing restrictions, ok. But you can't expect an entire industry to cater to you.

Watch Dogs failed me when I was forced to go online to deal with another player while I was just wanting the SP part only. As I wasn't really into being another Batman, wanted to just play his story. There was a part have to connect to another player, lost interest there. I prefer working with people than against people. I might of been a lot more interested if that was a black female protag avenging her niece/daughter instead. It's time they got a step up. I know women that would defend or avenge, (My mom would grab a gun to shoot someone if they killed her husband or children. She enjoys watching movies of destruction and tends to actually wish some of it, I don't. Still love ya mom.
)
Edit:
@Slimgrin I find most games I jump into a fail. Those games that caught my interest normally stick with me, and tend to still play. Most of those are customized creation of characters, while a few are "movie adaptions" to me. Batman is a "movie" to me, along with any other preset character. The Chief is a good "movie" to watch as well.
hummm.... sounded like a lot less female "movie" options to me now that I think about it, Tomb Raider (new one only) is a "movie" to me as well. Though her latest title added WW2 tidbits which made the game even more of a bonus to me.

Its been that way pretty much since the begining men said what drive men to do things and usually in the classic lit it is men + revenge = epic quest. Its obviously still popular as the list that emplys this greiving man goes psychotic cuz dead love one is a very long list dress it up, dress it down, stick it in a zombie apocolypse its still the same one trick pony. We've got others of course but its short hand its a very simple excuse to just pick this one trope out of a hat and say this is why we keep moving forward in the plot a very masculine thing and really thats what alot of the games do they parot manly things that were once done by manly men but are rarely seen now so kids and young men can live through their characters in this way. We don't have a woman eqivilant of this and even if there was the industry sure doesn't want it. The thing is though women can and do have the same types of desires avenging someones death can be universal its just maybe if a woman wrote a story with that as the leads motivation the violence would be approprate we'd have less cooridoor masicares and more deaths only when it was needed like the heroine wouldn't go blowup the entire south end of a city just to take out the guy and his mooks in one building.

Every game doesn't feature a "straight white guy with dark hair" despite the feminist propaganda that leaves people like you to believe. And the ones that do are mostly action FPS/TPS AAA games, which makes up such a minority of gaming as a whole.
Go play some RPGs, Nintendo, or even mobile games, instead of pigeonholing "gaming" based on mindless FPS such as COD and Battlefield. (the stories in those games are crappy anyway) They're in the minority, despite being popular.
