See even thought its FP and I can't see her, I hear her and that counts. I'd give COD another chance if they had a fem hero option for SP campeign and people either A) didn't treat her any differently or B) if they did she would just do her job and they'd have to eat their own words/actions. I mean the latest one has jet packs and mech suits you're telling me a woman can't wear a mech suit that will dispense the load of gear way better or use a jet pack to get her to her destination even faster? Wow....I can have mechs, fall off 5 stories w/o breaking a nail, and survive multiple stab wounds but being a woman well that's just unrealistic!

Especially since Call of Duty and Battlefield often have multiple POV characters. It would be a nice change of pace to have one be female.

Remember that shooters are one of the most popular genres. Even if they make up a smaller part of the market, they make up for it with their earnings. That is why there are pushes for more shooter type feature: to capitalize on the popularity of shooters.

Oh I know why they're doing it I'm just saying the actual playing mass is small comapred to other genres but the industry doesn't give a crap, they only care about the small numbers when its women wanting to play the games they already like but as women then its too small to invest, cultavate, or heck even try even half the time.

Well we did get one actually it was a fighter piolet you spied and dropped the bombs or something...I forgot which game she apears in but she starts off on a carrier ship and I knew within two seconds I was a woman by how the narrative and gameplay was structured it was just pure instinct. A few months later I found out I was right it was a woman I was happy but a bit upset why can't we have more? A longer POV character would be a starting compromise but have her you know make sounds so the men know who they are. I caught a thread about the woman piolet and many posters kept saying no that wasn't a girl you were playing as a guy dispite wikkia posts and devs own comments being introduced people just didn't/couldn't/ or wouldn't belive it.

Some of those other genres may not even have characters. A lot of mobile games, for example. That kind of skews the numbers a little.

Yeah, it was Battlefield 3. Pretty sure it was only one mission, though. I don't know how people missed that the character was a woman. The mission started off with a POV tag with the name, I believe.

I never really play shooters, mostly because of the male protagonist only option.  Women can be soldiers too.

Halo Reach is a shooter that I believe you can play as a female but If I'm wrong someone correct me. If you have a Xbox it's going to be a games with gold free game starting in mid September. I'm looking forward to trying it I just hope I'm a little better than I was with Mass Effect. I was so bad at Mass Effect I needed an easy button to get through. I did love the games even though I shot holes in everything but the bad guys. :)

Yes, I am aware FPS isn't exactly the highest, not even the closest to being top, it is however very popular with whom I mentioned. :)  It is a majority in my area that I see, or TPS nearly with it, other types do get some attention. I don't mean to say FPS needs to be in every game, as I prefer TPS myself, Mass Effect/Dragon Age styles.

@thehomeworld, they also want and prefer the female voice instead of the guy as well. :)  It's why they choose the female soldier over the male in Gears, so it lessens the impact of not being immersive.

EDIT:

There is one advantage of a guy thinking a woman cant shoot, when he gets killed by her.  Happened with a unit in another country, the females downed the militants cause they wouldn't shoot at the female soldiers.  adding in, that they might not of felt good that the guys didn't take them seriously, but they do live to fight again at least.

I believe that you're a male character in singleplayer, though there is a major female character.

THANK you for posting this - really great article, I encourage everyone to give it a read.  ^_^ Gaider as always deserves a round of applause, but I think my favorite quote was from Wright:

In my view, it's more commercially risky to exclude the very significant female audience than it is to risk alienating some of the less progressive audience.

"Less progressive" is very kind for "those" kinds of people, but I completely agree with this statement. Why keep pandering to a (hopefully) dying breed of misogynists (and racists, homophobes, etc)

I'm forcing myself to stay away from reading the comments section.  :P

Another browbeating article condemning the state of the game industry.

*yawn*

If they want to play up the relevance of women, there's better ways to do it. Not labeling an entire fanbase is a good place to start.

Hehe that's why I love this thread - where we can, at least most of the time, discuss this topic without wanting to shoot ourselves or others!

That article looks like a very cheap attempt to shift the blame.  The gaming industry should just go ahead and make more games with female protagonists.

Stuff like "but fewer males feel comfortable playing a female protagonist than vice versa" is nothing but a cowardly smoke screen. They don't dare to alienate the male gamer demographic with more female protagonists in games? Sorry, but that makes me laugh. They don't give a sh*t about any gamer's opinion when they saddle us with invasive DRM schemes, release games with more bugs than Klendathu and broker all their nice exclusivity (a word that comes from "to exclude") deals with console manufacturers.  But when it comes to female protagonists, they worry about a potential backlash?

Hahah. Nice try.

I think I can see your point. Maybe what it comes down to is a lack of creativity, or lack of desire to stray from a well worn formula. I wouldn't like to see the "male gamer" used as some kind of scapegoat - the men that I know couldn't give two craps about the gender of the protagonists; they just want to play a good game, like anybody else.

I do wish the small "less progressive" minority was less... vocal.

What I like about that article is it made me feel like this topic, which is important to a heck of a lot of people, is being recognized and talked about. That's pretty cool.  ^_^
