The top female athletes in weight lifting, throwing, vaulting, running, jumping, boxing, MMA wouldn't be able to compete with anyone in the top 100 for men.

Doesn't count for much when women fought as general infantry in the First and Second World Wars and the Russian Civil War. Before that they fought as infantry as well but it isn't as well documented.

In any case, this is a silly example for the anti-girl power argument, because this is clearly a gameplay issue. You cannot differentiate stats between male and female characters in the game, because it would essentially penalize players for playing a female character, or having female characters in the party.

Oblivion did it the right way. They gave men more Strength and women more Agility.

They used guns, not swords and armors.

And sure they did before, but it was in small numbers and they couldn't compete with an actual male soldier.

Feminism does not mean what you think it means.

It's irrelevant what you think it means. What's relevant is what they do.

Have you seen this? Apparently nothing like this happens to maleshep.

that's reasonably amusing given Javiks temperament, but from memory there is no uncomfortable lead up to that moment.

Also, totally should have done a mShep version!

Ok.... fun fact.... a woman pregnant pushed a car that would of taken more than two men.   Fun fact.  I am a male, average, two cops that were twice my height and twice my width couldnt move a car, I did without their help.  I can list more about females in matter of strength if wish.

You dont need mass to be strong.  :P

That's just because they forgot to put the car in neutral.

Used guns in close combat taking trenches off the Germans. It's cute that you keep saying these things, but women are strong enough to fight.

If there is another video featuring femquisitor before release, I like to hear the American voice, Sumalee Montano.

I always saw that as Javik trolling Shepard by sneaking into her bed while she was passed out to make her think they'd been sexual together, seems like something he'd do for his amusement.

Ok, progress has been made. Pateu sees how wrong he is. Can we get back on topic now please? <_< And/or ignore the large creature who lives under the bridge.

Sorry. I just like to argue is all, but I'm fighting the temptation now I promise.

So? I said they didn't use swords and armor, which require strength.

Using a rifle doesn't.

I'll just assume you don't understand how a bayonet works then, or anything really. Not much point in continuing this.

Actually the car was in neutral.  It was an icy slope, they didnt have the brain power to figure out how to do it is all.  ;)

Edit:  of course after they saw what I did, they knew what to do next time. I used my own body as leverage for the car, no kitty litter or anything added.

I can't wait to hear her, I hope she sounds just like Arcee  .

(I still feel that Inquisitors voiced by Sumalee Montano should be able to turn into a motorcycle at will. Meanwhile, the ones played by Jon Curry can summon Zevran and those played by Alix Wilton Reagan have a magical toothbrush ...)

One of the things I've always liked about most developers, that give us the choice to play as a man or a woman, is that they are always seen as equal in the story.

The Inquisitor will always be the Inquisitor regardless of their gender. I think its nice, it would be so easy for a developer to ruin a female character by changing how the world reacts to her, keeping both roles the same adds a fabulous dimension to the female protagonist.

The simplest example I can think of for this is Costume Quest. In this game you choose to play either Reynold or Wren, choose Reynold and the plot is a generic rescue your sister from evil monster story BUT choose Wren and all of a sudden you are rescuing your brother.

That might not seem like much but when was the last time a female protagonist got a rescue a male character, so it rarely happens that it was really exciting to experience it.

All Double Fine had to do, to give us this unique, exciting experience, was to keep the story the same for both protagonists.

Remember Me, I think? If not that then all I can think of is Ground Control's expansion: Dark Conspiracy.

It's an interesting point, often a  female protagonist will be rescuing another female character. Lara rescues Sam in Tomb Raider, Faith rescues her sister in Mirror's Edge. If you don't count variable characters (like your romance in a BioWare game) there's hardly anything at all.

In games women tend to rescue other women not men, actually thats not just in games but in film & T.V. too.

BioWare treats both protagonists as equal so if they write a rescue quest into a game like in DA2, then both protagonists get to do it.

It's only of the many benefits of having both genders as a protagonists.

While games with female protagonists may have rescue missions in them, as you pointed out, they are still rescuing a woman, so a woman is still the damsel in distress.

I'm not saying that this is been done on purpose, it just seems like the damsel in distress trope is so strong is our societies psyche that even when we get a female protagonist they still have to rescue a woman.

There are of course exceptions to this, but it does seem to be a general trend.

Edit: HURRAH 500 posts   :D

When I was in 1-3rd grade not sure when exactly we were asked to make our own version of various faerie tales.  Mine was "Sleeping Handsome" with a bad ass dragon slaying female protagonist :D

It's actually very rare for me to play a woman in a game if I am given the option.  Something that I can't even really understand.  On some level characters that I play tend to be in some ways a self-insert, and I think it's because mentally I often trip up on "am I playing this character appropriately, or am I simply ascribing my assumptions to what Allan thinks is appropriate despite lacking any sort of genuine perspective?" The odd thing is that I have no real issues playing as a woman if it's required.  Whether that be through a fixed character (like Lara Croft), or because a particular class is tied to a man/woman (i.e. the Sorceress in Diablo II was the mage/wizard type of character).

I am a little suprised by your answer.

"It says these are real people and it's okay to care about them. I think to some degree there's a joy to escapism when it's okay to care. That is something that I think is kind of a single-player phenomenon." ~ Director Mike Laidlaw

"Let's not have gifts that buy affection. Let's not have sex be the end goal. Let's instead try and reach for something that's like genuine affections and let you go up and say, "Hey you, we'e going to kiss now." And let players enjoy that, and feel like, yeah, that's a real thing." ~ Director Mike Laidlaw

Do you people have a problem with trying to seperate virtual reality from physical reality?

Instead of a damsel in (perpetual) distress to lazily propel a plot forward for even a lady protagonist, I'd much rather see the lady protagonist teach the would-be damsel how to survive and defend herself, to empower her to have choices and agency, rather than just be a Capture The Flag object.

I think often it might just be a case of not wanting to tie the romance into the conflict, but still keep the same personal conflict. So they make an obviously platonic damsel.

So, like... Molly from Neuromancer rescues the girl from The Professional?

Being a civilian shouldn't be treated as a flaw to be fixed.  Characters shouldn't need to be able to fight to be empowered

Well, for starters, Russian women in the Legion of Death performed quite well during WW1. The first battalion took over 100 German prisoners during a Russian retreat, so to say that they couldn't hold their own against male soldiers is false. Women also fought extensively in partisan forces across the continent during WW2, as well as in the Red Army. Lyudmila Pavilchenko killed 309 Axis soldiers, , of which 36 were German snipers. One of those snipers had over 500 kills in his logbook.

As for women fighting before guns, you have numerous Roman records of barbarian women fighting. They fought Lusitani women in Iberia, Cimbri women during that tribes' great migration south from Germania into Italy, women from any number of Germanic tribes fought with spear and shield, as did some Britannic women. Legends of the Amazons likely came from the Scythians, whose women fought as horse archers, and were required to kill one man before they could lose their virginity. Women may not have fought amongst the more "civilized" cultures of the ancient world, but records of them fighting amongst the so called barbarians are plentiful.

Enough with the lady inqusitor already. I think Bioware has overdone it. Most gameplay or demos are with Fem Inqusitor. Really hope they show Male Elf next and not a female one.
