I'd love to run one as well if only for the LI size differences! Though I'm leaning toward a huge Qunari lady who had pick Cullen up in her arms... and then carry him to the errmmm... required... destination....  ahem.... :P

I always love dwarves, especially they are given such an unfair shake of impossible to make original. So many things we think are somehow standard for dwarves were throw away lines in LotR immediately debunked or very unique to that setting. I love playing dwarves because by gosh there are a million ways to make them interesting if people gave it a shot.

Bioware did pretty good at it, which is why if I can, my canon character will always be a FemDwarf

Yeah, the long arms on the dwarves were odd!

Aimo's lady dwarf inquisitor is super cute. I remember when she did a lot ME stuff with femShep.

The long arms never bothered me.  It just reinforced they weren't just short humans.

They looked better in the Artwork , and I admit...it did look a bit weird . I don't think you need long weird arms to think of them as no-humans . They can drink you on the table any day lol

Eh, I dislike when non human races are too human.  I like there being a few off features.

I don't think I really noticed the long arms on dwarfs until after I saw some really sweet aimo art with her lady noble and Alistair afterwards I can't not notice the arms but I'm not bothered by them though it did make the redesign of the genlocks more humors to me since they had much longer arms too.

Eh, lots of things didn't really scale to them. Giant hammers! Giant swords! Banging you on the butt with every step and cant let it touch the ground! It can be kinda silly, but I still love them because for once dwarves are not defined as Oghren. I was a DnD player so I heard so many dwarf jokes or told I couldnt play a certain way because dwarves are not like that. Dwarves only usually exist as a stereotype in most fantasies. My gf once challenged me to make 3 different unique dwarves that took into account their "stereotypes" (or at least most of them) I did 5.

I like dwarves

And I am calling BS on that.

The top female athletes in weight lifting, throwing, vaulting, running, jumping, boxing, MMA wouldn't be able to compete with anyone in the top 100 for men.

So why force it on us in Dragon Age?

But wait, it gets better. Because The Witcher DOESN'T force that bullshit on you, they  get called sexists. I blame feminism for teaching women that whenever they don't have their way, it's because of patriarchy and sexist pigs.

So what your saying is men are suppose to be gods in gaming but women are suppose to be their arm candy. Status Quo Defending at its most basic.

Games need a bit of realism like gravity and bullets hurt they don't actually need the whole social constrants of women need to be chain to the kitchen, having babies, if not otherwise in disposed with being the man's trophy or his reward. Women gamers want  (because they've been playing ) characters just as powerful because they've been playing men who are assumed lord of their empire the second they walk into the room. And you know women can take out men its called using his wieght against him a 120lb woman can flip over a 250lb man if she knows what she's doing and of course surpise attacks can also be leveraged but in a game that doesn't matter what matters is making the player god like and women want to be heroines who are also gods with agency, power, status, oh and hot guys. Not goddesses who usually end up as nothing but prettier damsels, suffering wives, as booty calls, or fridged cuz the god in question needs to go on a rampage.

EDIT:

Women in fights....

http://en.wikipedia....ors_in_folklore

List of women that fought against armies in that list....

EDIT add

http://en.wikipedia....ancient_warfare

many warrior women specifics there... (adding: Romans saw alot of women on the battlefields apperently from what I read back in 2 BC)

Thanks for the links I'll go over them. I liked the Trung Sisters I still think their story or any one of their many female generals could make a great base for the characterization of a AC fem lead. Like they did with Ezio it made him better then the other male leads.

Kameron Hurley's essay 'We have always fought' is an interesting read too and would highly recommend it in regards to narratives on women being soldiers.

It's been a while since I poked my head in here. (I think I mentioned not liking Ladyhawke's running animation here) anyway, as seen in my avatar I love playing female dwarfs. My canon is a casteless dwarf and my current one is a dwarven noble.   I think I'm going to check out the MP.  I saw the little red headed bomber (and if she's the one who gets to throw the jar of bees is a for sure thing).

Kingdoms of Alamar: Reckoning. I played the demo (at the time to get an outfit and a couple a guns for ME3) and liked it.  In the demo you could only make a guy.   even though It went against my recent game buying habits (I like RPGs that let me play as a female) I decided to buy it anyway.  I was happily surprised I could play as a female. I had no indication that it was even a possibility. (which reminds me, that's a game I liked, but I barely played. might want to put that back on my list). It was a decision took me a few months to make, but if I had known I would have bought it much sooner.

Dragon age origins was my first bioware game. My younger brother had heard of ME, but since it started as an xbox game none of us had ever played it. I was chosing between DAO and another fantasy game (I would not know the name of it now if someone showed me the box for it) the other game had girls on the front on the box, but they had typical skimpy fantasy style clothing. I looked at the DAO box and was intrigued because the box didn't have a hero on the front at all. The back talked about war and how you could make your character to fight in it.  Since I bought it at the store I had no clue what to expect. who knew that day I would find my favorite game series and my favorite game developer all at the same time? (I also love mass effect and went back into their games and bought jade empire and the star wars game as well).

btw i'm 38 and I've been playing games since I was very young. My dad had a commedore 64. (my older brother just informed me that we had the vick 20 as well). we bought a NES and never really looked back. My dad, my two brothers and I played all the time. my mom wasn't much into anything but tetrus and bust a move (its one of the predecessors to all the casual bubble bursting games of today). there was not a time in my life that I didn't play video games and I know I'm not the only one. I really don't have any kind of game I really hate (I'm not good at all with driving games, but for some reason I didn't have the issue so many people seemed to have controlling the Mako in ME).  Once you tackle the horried driving in Saints row 2 (PC port) driving is not so tough in many games anymore.  I don't care if it a casual facebook game or a game in which I have over 250 hours in (like Skirim) and have yet to get even close to finishing the story. I just like being a gamer it's my hobby and it has been for forever.  women did not just start playing games, we've always been here. The industry is just finally starting to see it.

I think there are too many people that might have taken all the commercials and media when we were younger at face value. now all the blogs, websites and such female gamers can finally say "yep, I play" and it *looks* like it only just started. it's not true, and never really has been.

anyway, I"m hoping to get more of a glimpse of a female dwarf than the one screenshot from a dev and the dwarven examples on the main site with a helmet covering their heads.

I've heard the VA speak in an interview, but not as her character. She sounds really really cool as herself. Definitely gonna roll American first time. Yeehaw! :D

Women can't be warriors?

According to the writings of Polyaenus, Amage was the wife of the Sarmatian king Medosaccus. They were from the coast of the Euxine Sea. Having observed that her husband was "totally given up to luxury", she took over the government, acting as a judge of causes, stationing garrisons, repulsing enemy invasions, and was such a successful leader that she became famous through all Scythia. As a result of this fame, the people of the Tauric Chersonesus, having been harassed by a neighboring Scythian king, requested a treaty with her. As a result of the formation of this treaty, she wrote to the Scythian prince, requesting that he cease harassing the people. When he replied contemptuously, she marched against him with 120 strong and seasoned warriors, and gave each warrior three horses. In one night and one day, she covered a distance of of 100 stades (roughly 184.81 kilometers), and arrived at the palace, surprising the inhabitants and killing all the guards. As the prince was taken off guard, and conceived her force to be larger than it really was, she was able to charge and personally kill him, as well as his friends and relatives. Thus she enabled the people of Chersonesus to regain free possession of their land. She allowed the prince's son to live and rule the kingdom on the condition that he not invade nearby kingdoms. This took place towards the end of the second century, BCE.

Amage

"He therefore turned against their towns, thinking that thus he should take vengeance on them, and at the same time secure a quantity of plunder for his army, and that the robbers would scatter, each to his own place, when their homes were threatened. With this design he began destroying everything that came in his way. Here he found the women fighting and perishing in company with the men with such bravery that they uttered no cry even in the midst of slaughter...

...Passing over this he advanced to another river called the Nimis, where he attacked the Bracari because they had plundered his provision train. They were a very warlike people, the women bearing arms with the men, who fought never turning, never showing their backs, or uttering a cry. Of the women who were captured some killed themselves, others slew their children with their own hands, considering death preferable to captivity."

---Appian, on the Spanish Wars

"Most of the Ambrones were cut down there in the stream where they were all crowded together, and the river was filled with their blood and their dead bodies; the rest, after the Romans had crossed, did not dare to face about, and the Romans kept slaying them until they came in their flight to their camp and wagons. Here the women met them, swords and axes in their hands, and with hideous shrieks of rage tried to drive back fugitives and pursuers alike, the fugitives as traitors, and the pursuers as foes; they mixed themselves up with the combatants, with bare hands tore away the shields of the Romans or grasped their swords, and endured wounds and mutilations, their fierce spirits unvanquished to the end."

Plutarch, on the battle of Aquae Sextiae

"Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors."

---The Tale of the Heike

While I agree that women have participated as warriors and soldiers throughout history, notably among celtic populations, ancient iranian (and other similar ethnic/cultural groups), and in some areas such as Japan (though my own knowledge on that area is well... barren)

they have always been by far the minority, and many accounts of female warriors also come from folk tales and legends, hardly reliable sources
