Women can't be warriors?

Yes, women can be warriors, congrats for your ability to link a bunch of unsubstantiated historical crap. Guess what, women can't be the same warriors men are. It's genetically impossible,

they have always been by far the minority

Let's say that's true - surely we can't possibly draw the conclusion from that that there should be way less playable female soldiers in video games (or female characters in that kind of position in general)?

I don't understand why some people feel so strongly about pigeonholing pixelated women into these stereotypical and boring roles of damsels and sexy babes. Let's branch out, for crying out loud.

. I never said we should. In lore women in Thedas serve in the military with regularity and I'm more than happy to see them doing so.

I was just commenting on the IRL history, not what applies to Dragon Age.

Oh I see - sorry to misinterpret your intentions, it's just that earlier in this thread we had someone try to explain why there shouldn't be any female soldiers in video games (or something along those regards) due to whatever he believed to be historical facts and blah blah blah. :P

It's been proven that some people 'don't do history' cos it's written by dead people a long time ago not some guy on that other forum with heaps of cred.

A shame, because I'm certain they'd be wiser for it.

As a rule its best not to trust many ancient historians, their understanding of foreign cultures and such is limited at its best.

. Yeah that's just not relevant to Thedas. Women serve in the army, end of discussion.

I suppose you can take gumption with the writers making that choice, but that's for another thread

Well it's all we have, but yeah, I get that it can be misconstrued or was intentionally set out that way (the victors write history and all that) but it's hardly fairy stories.

Perhaps we can move on from this topic now? It's becoming toxic and considering that Dragon Age has female warriors if people don't like it they can go play some other super realistic game. With dragons and sh*t. (or perhaps with historical accuracy of say *cholera simulator 2015*)

Sooo.....from what I understand , the british voice for female Inquistor is the same who did Samantha Traynor . And the american one is the same who did Nyreen (Aria gf) .

So which one you gonna pick and for whom ? I'm going American one for my Qunari  and my Elf! And Maybe leave the British traynor for Mage and Warrior ? Wonder how that will sound on a dwarf  ^_^

Before the topic moves on (which I agree it really really should) could I just chime in with one thing real quick?

This is a video game where the rules are whatever the creators of the game decide so the 'its not realistic' argument confuses me a little bit. This is a game where many women hold many positions of power and the religion is run by women mainly and based off a woman (the main human religion anyway) So arguing that its not realistic is confusing to me because it is realistic in the setting that the game has provided for us. Sorry stuff like this is not my strong suit I just felt like voicing my thoughts on this real quick before the topic moved on.

I want to say I'll pick the american VA because Nyreen was great I really enjoyed her but I'd really have to hear the American VA before hand first (really hoping there's a test the voice option before picking one of them in the CC) Also I've really like the British VA a lot I know she's going to be voicing one of my main dwarf PCs I'm just not sure which one yet.

I wonder if Sumalee Montano will use the voice she did for Nyreen, or if she will use a deeper voice like she did with Katana in Beware the Batman.

Actually, a lot of that stuff has been substantiated, by historians and forensic archaeologists using modern methods to look at battle fields and grave sites. A lot of skeletons which were identified as male because of the grave goods found with them (swords, the shields of their enemies, etc) have turned out to have female pelvises. Brute strength is only one way to win a battle, and there are whole systems of fighting designed around speed and the ability to turn an enemy's bulk against them.  That goes quadruple when you are in a universe with magic and ranged weapons.

But really, don't talk to me about authenticity until you can explain how fighting off a horde of undead --in melee combat in the mud, no less-- while carrying 80 kg of looted weapons and armour is genetically possible.

Very cool, I don't think I've heard her outside of Nyreen from ME3 and Eirena from Diablo 3.

She would definitely work out well for a Qunari or Dwarf character.

Thank you thank you thank you ! I never heard her voice beyond being Nyreen and its clear it was altered to fit the 'turian' kinda of voice . Wow it's really.....um...different isn't ? I hope , she still give us the Nyreen kinda of voice . And not just the voice..but you know...the whole 'I'm a calm collected ' vibes she was sending .

I mean she does sneak on us....in an amazing stylish way

Her voice is the default for Female Dwarf and Qunari, so Bioware agrees.

The only alteration with Nyreen was the Turian echo in the voice. In Transformers: Prime, she voices the Autobot Arcee who sounds the same as Nyreen but without the echo.

Yeah, the "realism" argument makes no sense in the context of a game/series like Dragon Age. For one, it's not unrealistic that the hero of the story and her companions be the best of the best, more strong and skilled than most just as the male hero and his companions. We're not talking about a random waitress or farmer here. The physically strongest woman in history would not be as strong as the physically strongest man in history, this is true. She would however be stronger than the majority of random men (especially in today's sedentary society) and that's not even accounting for skill or training. It's funny that "realism" only ever applies when someone doesn't want strong or skilled women in the game. No complaints about the magic or the talking trees or demons pouring out of the sky, not a peep about horns randomly growing out of a person's head and how that would affect their balance. Dragons being so heavy and huge but somehow being able to fly? Perfectly legitimate. Fighters doing 5 backflips across the battlefield and jumping 12 feet in the air? A-OK as long as it's a male. Characters being able to be stabbed, shot, chewed up by a dragon, burned, frozen, impaled, etc...multiple times and shake it off? No problem there, totally realistic!

Those who complain and say "well gosh darn, no woman would ever be able to beat a man in combat! Men are often bigger than women!" are oddly silent about a smaller man being able to beat a larger man in combat, a human being able to beat a Qunari (or scores of them) in combat, or a dragon in combat. Think about the difference in strength and size between your average man and woman of the same lifestyle, diet, and level of activity. Now think of the difference in strength and size between a human man and the Arishok or a freaking DRAGON.

Yet peoples want realism . Just look at the modding community in Skyrim . They wanted a heigh Adjustement , so you have a couple of mods who yet again go in the realistic sense . Mens are taller then Womens , Always . Unless of course , a specie lore say otherwise like with the High Elves .

Sometimes , stuff like this ? It really really make me hate realism . Because , here you have the gift of modding and coding . And instead of improving our sucky reality , you go and implemant something that will......in some manner make a group frown at your work .

Why drag reality into a fantasy game ? You want realism , why not tweak it . Would it harm it that badly ? Is it a view of 'realism even if it suck , even if it can make peoples go to war , we must uphold it no matter what !' . What do they even gain ?

Just wanted to say a quick little boasting thing about the bolded real quickly. My grandmother worked as a cop for around 15 years and one of mine favorite cop stories she has told me was when she had to arrest and bring in three men into the station. She was by herself and the men were quite larger than her she brought them in on her own just fine after one elbowed her and she  was still able to take them down and bring all of them in tied to one another because she didn't have enough cuffs for all of them. Yes she had special training that those men probably didn't and I"m sure the same will be with our Inquisitor. They are well trained they are exceptional among others in battle just like most if not all main characters in games.

I apologize I just love sharing that story of how my grandmother restrained and brought in three larger guys by herself :) (I'll stop boasting now)

Stories I can tell about my grandmother are a mix bag some are awesome like that cop story and some of face palm worthy like her getting us kicked out of a Slackers for pretending to fondle a cardboard cut out of some guy from LOTR who's name I can't recall at the moment^^;
