Is adding to the stereotype that all dwarven women have beards which has turned them into a joke in most mediums everywhere, even when they do not.  Is frustrating as all heck when trying to play a dwarven female anywhere.

so you are arguing that it makes fictional dwarves more "discriminated" against

As Kallen pointed out though, we're not forced to have the stubble.  My reaction to that is simply that there is always going to be folks that pick on dwarven players (and a shoutout to the gnome and halfing players in RPGs as well,) and those trolls aren't worth acknowledging.

Play what you like, and to hell with anyone that tries to give you a hard time.   ;)

@lady Nuggins, I hadn't seen those before they were promotional for the movie? Or just concepts?

They certainly are lovely.

@steelcan, I'd be happy to see more dwarf or elf male gameplay, but I'm at the point now where I'd just want to get my hands on the game and play it myself.

it helps makes the players of fictional dwarves who don't want their characters to have beards more discriminated against because "dwarven women all have long beards, har har har" even in games where it's far from the norm by lore.  You've never had to deal with it so you don't understand.  Seen grown men fall into acting like school yard bullies over that bearded women crap.

Don't presume to know anything about what I do in other games

If I understand correctly you are saying players of female dwarves have characters who are discriminated against....because they don't have beards...

I'm desperately trying not to strawman so please tell me if I hit the nail on the head

Wait, you're saying that if I want to play a beardless female dwarf I might feel discriminated against because of a perception that 'dwarven women have beards'.

I'm sorry that is one of the most ridiculous arguments I've heard in a long time. Please stop conflating possible real world discrimination with something that happens only in a fantasy setting. It's dumb at best, insulting at worst.

Women with beards are ugly as ****. They deserve to be in a circus.

I've always liked Dwarves though. It's just that I don't have a strong attachement to Tolkien. I think people who came after him improved on a lot of things  and made fantasy the great genre it is now. D&D, for example.

It was concept art for the film.  Here's another scan (I think it was for a photo book) with the accompanying description saying these are friends and family of the crew.

No I mean as a player being discriminated against by having your character made fun and having everyone insisting on crap that isn't supported by lore, and making playing your character impossible and no longer fun and making you feel like **** while they all laugh and think it's funny and a joke.  Some people put their heart and soul into their characters, and when people turn them into a joke, it effing hurts, especially when they laugh in your face.

There is no guarantee that facial hair on dwarven women is common. It may rare for dwarven women to naturally have facial hair and/or it is usually shaven off. This does not need to be lore breaking.

I would be disappointed if Bioware made the facial hair of dwarven women the subject of jokes, but there's no guarantee that will happen either.

On the list of  'Things BioWare shouldn't joke about' bearded fictional people isn't very high on the list

If a single bearded women joke occurs involving dwarven women in game I'm done...  or a single reference to my dwarf not having a beard...  Fortunately I still manage to have enough faith in bioware to know this won't happen...  Unless I see Oghren again, then all bets are off.

You strike me as the kind of person who would have joined in on insisting on my character having a beard, and making fun of her constantly, and then not understanding why I as the player was upset.

That's really crappy that happened to you, but it seems like any of the fictional races could just as easily run into the same kind of teasing.  Since, like you said, I doubt Bioware will now make this a huge joke, I don't think that will be a big concern here.  To me, it's just one more addition of player choice, and I don't see why choices should be taken away just because someone might mock it.

Nobody cares whether you think they're hot or not.  Don't play a bearded lady dwarf if you don't want to look at them.

I'm not trying to be unsympathetic, but you have to let that go.  You shouldn't allow folks to get under your skin like that over a video game/rpg choice.

Take it from someone that's been playing D&D for almost 30 years: Folks will always find a reason to put down others in the geek/gaming community.  Just laugh at them and move on.   To be blunt, f*ck 'em.  They are just trying to get a reaction out of you.  Have a duck's back and let it wash over you.

Shoot, if I allowed jerks like that to get in the way of my RPG experiences, I would have quit after the first Final Fantasy came out in 1990.  I also would have quit playing D&D in high school.

Anyways!

I think we should get over that Tolkien isn't the sole authority on dwarves anymore. Female or male. Dwarves haven't conformed to his vision for almost 100 years (ok not really, but it's been a long time).

Bearded lady dwarves don't exist in DA anyways. So it doesn't matter.

This isn't Lord of the Rings.

They have stubble now, so they do exist in Thedas.  Just because we hadn't seen them up to this point doesn't mean that they never existed.  The lore evolved, in a way that I don't mind at all.  In fact, I welcome the option wholeheartedly.

Nuggins is right.  Don't like it, don't add stubble to your female dwarf.  I'm not going to, because I personally don't like the way it looks (never got into stubble on my dwarven ladies.)  However, if dwarf NPC #147 is a female with stubble, it's not going to hurt my enjoyment or immersion of the game.

Dwarves in almost all media, TES being the one exception I can think of off the top of my head, have been pretty conforming to Tolkien
