To be honest, I think female Inquisitor got the better end of the deal by being who they use in all the gameplay demos rather than the trailers.

female inquisitor has been shown exclusively for the past few months and yet you still complain when the dude is shown. you people give anti feminists more ammo because you've shown that you don't care about equal representation, you just to dominate.

to the person who said that more people watch trailers than game play, you are blatantly wrong.
e3 game play part 1 has 671k views
part 2 has 348k.
ign's gamescom game play video has 621k

enemies of thedas has 555k,
discover the dragon age has 571k
fires above 588k

game play and trailers get the same number of views that's a FACT

Up until this game, this game specifically, did I never watch gameplay videos. I only watched trailers. The trailers do not share female inquisitor, except one near the end, and could be considered just voiced like Morrigan was talking or another companion was talking, cause she was barely shown. This is not equal. There needs to be a trailer to show off the female, not just gameplay's. Cause there are many that dont follow the gameplay videos due to them usually having some kind of spoiler. Which, that Redcliffe did spoil some gamers at least a little bit.

Fun fact, not even a million views, means not all, will know about the female option.  EDIT: One is, but that still doesnt count for everyone.

This will happen again for Dragon Age Inquisition unless marketing pushes out can change gender of inquisitor on the cover of the boxes. Cause there are some that prefer not watching any videos, just read the back of a cover instead.

That's my biggest concern at this point when it comes to the marketing.  I would be disappointed if they didn't show at least the female Inquisitor on the back with the male on the front.  That way, it's made very clear from the box itself that gender options are available.  I don't want this game to go through ME syndrome, especially since the DA team is obviously trying to draw in players that have never played before.  Or players like my dad, that played DA2 once and didn't like it (too much hack and slash for him.)

It would be a complete disservice to this game if there wasn't a female-centric trailer, or at the very least, having her appear on the box in some fashion.  In trailer as well, and more than just some "Oh, who's that?" cameo that a lot of people are going to miss.  Show her face as clearly as they just did with Generic White Inquisitor.

I'm still rolling my eyes that I couldn't see a black man in this trailer, or anyone that isn't white.  Shoot, one of the criticisms of both DA:O and DA2 that I completely agreed with was that the older game engine did a very bad job of rendering any skin tone darker than tan.  This latest trailer would have been a perfect chance to show off a lady or a guy PoC for the PC and showcase what the engine can do.  It would demonstrate that, frankly, darker skin tones no longer look like crap.  They've done a pretty good job before with the party members and NPCs, but not so much for the player character.  Frostbite has changed that.  Time to show their stuff.

It's not too late, as they will continue doing ads for awhile after the game comes out.  So I'll keep offering my feedback, and pray that the marketing department doesn't continue with the ol' tried and true.   :(

I am sure that marketing has seen this thread, hope they look at the current posts.  :)  I could be wrong, maybe Allan can share that, I could twitter it too. ;)

If they showed off more than one inquisitor it might of helped, though they may have another in the works for the female.....hoping.

I would prefer a clearly female main character on the box over a gender neutral one. Because of the history of video games, I would argue that the majority of people looking at a character with an indefinite sex will naturally assume the character is actually male.

For the record, here is my preference of box art in order of most preferential to least:

1. Both a male and female version of the same character given equal space devoted to them
2. A clearly female main character
3. A gender-neutral main character
4. A clearly male main character

Perhaps they would, but I think that would shift the problem away from the box art itself.

In all honesty, I would like to see a BADASS Femquisitor in a mainstay trailer, and a BADASS MaleQuisitor in a gameplay stream. It's very weird how they have seemed to seperate the gender of the Inquisitor in the media... streams only get FemQuizzy (except for one), and trailers only get MaleQuizzy (except for one). It's ridiculous.

They have a set Inquisitor for the first impression marketing, so that's he's recognisable and they then use the more casual / informative demonstrations to show how much you can deviate from that. I'm not sure I agree with the approach but it makes sense.

Note how the one trailer Inquisitrix still conformed completely with the male's look, while nearly all the demonstration Inquisitors don't.

I'd like for a future Dragon Age box art to have both the male and female protagonists on the front cover, and advertise being able to customize your hero's gender and race as a major selling point rather than pretending the hero is a white male human. ;)

We've gotten male Quizzy gameplay at Crestwood (PAX last year), Valammar, and all the Emerald Graves gameplay videos.

I've actually been thinking for the past few weeks now that the gameplay videos have seemed too female-centric and the trailers have seemed too male-centric.
I'd personally prefer the gameplay videos to utilise the male protagonist more and the trailers to utilise the female protagonist more to create a better balance.

Oh, and that above picture makes me sad, because that's pretty much exactly how I was planning to design my first Inquisitor. Now she won't be unique! :(

Since you seemed to miss it, I'll just quote my previous response to your numbers.

These numbers reflect the number of people who seek out videos for games they enjoy. Or, in other words, the hardcore gamers. What these numbers don't include are the people who only see the trailer for a game on TV or when it pops up as an add before a video, and those are ALWAYS trailers and not game play videos. So while it's true that all of the numbers you presented above are accurate, they are also only a piece of the total number of views. We can be conservative and assume that the trailers only receive half again as many views from "casual" gamers and the trailers would still get a million more views, 2.5m to 1.6m.

gameplay and trailers are indeed close but not same, but still not good enough to say, "You dont need a specific female trailer."

Gameplay videos are avoided by several people due to possible spoilers, several even avoid trailers less its a commercial on tv. Some will wait till its out on shelf to look at the back cover. This is where its actually the most important, saying can play either gender on the cover itself. A solid female trailer, one that doesnt make people go, was that her, needs to be made for those that dont watch gameplay vids, while it wont matter to those that do watch them.

And nice you picked me, without seeing what the other posts responded with to you. You appear to have ignored the point of my post. I will be sure to bolden it this time.

Well, if the inquisitor looked like that, I would want to be behind her too.....oh....um....

A cover without any inquisitor on the box, just the symbol would work.

Oh, and that above picture makes me sad, because that's pretty much exactly how I was planning to design my first Inquisitor. Now she won't be unique! :(

I've long since given up on making anyone unique.  The last time I tried, in the ME games, I kept making a Shep that looked like she had rhinoplasty go horrible awry.  The devs have mentioned probably releasing face codes like in the ME games as well.  So I'll probably use a good default, and hope that someone like faces of gaming builds some nice Inquisitors that way.

It would be nice to have femquisitor on the front cover and put malequisitor on the back.

It would be nice for a change of pace.   :)

I've read, outside of thread, a couple of posts that think we're being sexist by asking for equal attention.   That we all hate men or something. Sexist would be demanding that the male Inquisitor isn't shown in any fashion anymore from here on out.   No Blip ads, no TV ads, no new trailers.   Sexist would be demanding that the male Inquisitor not be on the cover at all.

That isn't what the folks in this thread are asking for.   Last I checked, no one in here hated men and wanted to completely exclude them for any future ad time or wanted them off of the game box.

I think having one of the very few games with a female hero going onto the front of the box is more than fair.  We're happy to share the spotlight with the male Inquisitor, but we don't want to be reduced to a tiny thumbnail on the back of the box.  The male Inquisitor shouldn't be either, but frankly, if they only had room for one or the other, I would hope it's the female one.

As Tiger mentioned, I would be fine with a symbol like NWN or DA:O.

See, one of my big reasons for being supportive of this isn't just because I'm a woman.  I'm a gamer that's sick and tired of seeing the same thing over and over again from video game heroes in advertising.  It's boring.   The Generic White Guy with Stubble #1145 up there is dull and overdone.  I've been looking at gaming boxes for the better part of the last 20 years and there's almost always a guy just like that on the front of the box.  If I'm lucky, there might be a blurb and blurry thumbnail that shows a female version of a PC, if the choice is in the game at all.

Now, having a BioWare female PC on the front of the box would be different and not the same thing over and over again.  Generic White Guy won't get people talking as much as if the EA and BioWare marketing teams put a female on the box.  Just the novelty of that alone would get the attention of the gamer community.   Many folks are talking about things like the presence of women, minorities and the LGBT community in games partially because this very narrow scope of masculinity, ethnicity and looks has gotten stale.

Before anyone asks, I do think the over-idealization of men is as big of a problem as the over-sexualization women in games.

Edit: Holy typos Batman!  Pre-coffee posting for the loss.

I hope if they do a feminqusitor trailer that not only is she kicking ass maybe even showing different classes and making it very clear she's the hero you can play as not some side kick but also they release her trailer in every form they released the male in TV spots, youtube commercial spots, ect heck even make it the same outlets they contracted for the male trailer maybe even the same timeslots, run it the same amount of times they do the male so if they plan to show the male trailer 8 times a day do hers for equally 8 times a day on popular circuts don't undersell her, really maximize it,

when BW released femshep only on the web not many people saw it so I can find people who don't know about her or via the trailer think you can only play as her in ME3 or its known as that game you can play as a chick due to her not being evenly advertised from ME - ME3.

This is the last DA game so it might still create that confusion of you can be chick only in the third game but she'll be out there evenly if they also do gorgeous CG trailer of her in bloody battle maybe removing her helmet after the kills pulling in close to show its a woman who did that awesome take down, taking on large monsters w/o the damseling moments of oops I fell down help me up! It needs to action packed but she also needs to be stylish in fighting style (not sexy) she needs to potray confidence, skill, finesse, competence, style in moves and armor (that protects her not sexulizes her), and agency maybe even issuing orders to the other women and men (make them even in number) in her group while she goes in for the kill and takes the reigns of the situation like a boss  so that not only would men think it would be cool to play as her (as opposed to protect or bang her yeah don't go there), but also important women want to be her.

Basically if you keep treating her as an other gamers who already think women are they will continue to do so you need to show them she's not that you don't believe now and for all future games the femhero is not an other, she's a hero players want and need to play as, gamers especially over time will change and feel the same way picking both sexes for their playthroughs and the industry can change that mindset so long as the industry helps and wants players to do so by making active, consistent, and actual effort to make the mindset change. Once upon a time crowds had 50/50 split of gender in crowds today its socially acceptable to see 30w/80m in them movies trained people to see that as normal no consumer woke up and said nope 50/50 is just too much women lets reduce that no the industry did that popularized it and now its very hard to do 40/60 w/o criticism but if you kept showing that 40/60 eventually people will take to it and think thats normal until you reach back up to 50/50 but the move needs to happen and consistently happen right now its consistent women are LIs, candy, motivational material as dead babes or damsels, but not to often hero.

After 24 years of gaming I'm sick of being told by games and other products I'm the other, I'm the less important one because I'm a woman, I know its not consciously done most of the time but when more importance is placed on the male characters then women the male's game is pushed harder then the women's, when I can be told by children straight up, "a woman can't be a hero" why would they think this? Because advertising and marketing doesn't show them often enough they can be and that its not some fad thing that will go away for the next 25 titles and resurface as some under funded, under marketed, rushed niche title until the next 25 important male games make the list. Games don't have to be radically different, marketing and advertising doesn't need to be radically different tweaked? Sure here and there but I don't need a trailer for fem hero to be bright and happy when its a war game she should be just as gritty as the man weathering the crap tossed at her, have explosions, have her kickbox in hand to hand combat if they guy isn't about her weight or straight up hand to hand him if he's her build type, have her shoot people with awesome bullet graphics or slice people with slow mo blood splatter, have her get in fights with scars, blood, a clenched jaw, raised head, bravery in her stance, and determination in her eyes but she needs to be there the one the trailers shows us is the hero the important person you the player plays as just like they do the men she's not less because she a woman she's made less because publishers and marketing say she is and publishers and marketing need to knock it off.

Fair enough, but check this out.  I did a google search for video game female protagonists/Player Characters.  Wiki first spit this at me:

http://en.wikipedia....le_protagonists

35 entries, including a few that I know never made it out of Japan.

Now for the comparison:

http://en.wikipedia...._in_video_games

200 entries, and a few of which also never got exported.

I'm sorry, but it is tragically easy to overlook most games with female protagonists.  What's more, it's that video games that have a female lead get only 40% of the marketing budget versus male leads, and sometimes less.  Go on ahead and google that for yourself.

So not only is there not many female protagonists, but the general public is more likely to miss them because the game companies can't be arsed to give the same amount of the ad budget.  This leads to this odd cycle were companies claim they are afraid to promote or even have a female PC because of poor sales.  They aren't giving those games the same amount of ad budget as the male PCs.  With a poor ad budget, the game is a lot less likely to be on TV as well as on sites like Blip.  So they don't sell well, because the marketing team behind those game companies think it's too risky.  Which starts this whole spiral all over again.

Game companies, including BioWare, are reexamining this cycle and are starting to conclude that it's self-created.  Perhaps maybe, just maybe, if female PCs actually got equal screen time as well as an equal advertising budget as male PCs, they would sell better.   This is something that BioWare themselves have finally started to do.  While I'm still disappointed in the lack of creativity for the PC in the latest trailer, they have still at least done more to promote the female PC pre-launch than many companies ever bother to do afterward.

What I'd like to see is for them to truly put their money where their mouth is.  Give us an official trailer to go along with the male Inquisitor's.  Give them both equal air time on Blip as well as on other sites and on TV.  It's time to shake things up a little more.
