I believe that puppyofwar's point is that she would like to see herself in the same shoes as the player character.

For example: Since I'm a guy I can better relate to, or see myself as the male lead. While puppofwar would better relate to, or see herself in a female lead.

I think that's the gist of it (please correct me if I'm wrong).

That's a load of malarky.  I played the Tomb Raider series when I was a young lad and I enjoyed every second of it.  Did I care a spittle that she was a woman?  Did I give two licks that I couldn't put myself in Lara's shoes and picture MYSELF climbing those cliffs and shooting down tigers with dual pistols?  Hell no.  It's not about that.  It's never about that.  I enjoy a game no matter who's the lead.  The only time when I can see it mattering which gender you play as is games like THESE.  And it's a given that you can play as a both sexes nowadays.   I don't pick up a game like God of War and think to myself....

"Yeah, I feel JUST like him. This is great! Killing mythical gods and having sex with Aphrodite!  GO ME!"  Power fantasy my ass.  There was no power fantasy there.  I was just playing as a character.  And not a particularly compelling one either.

Different people have different experiences. When I picked up God of War, all I could think was that the anti-villain protagonist was such an unlikable monster that I kind of hoped he died as much as the gods who toyed with him. I promptly went to get a refund.

Good for you, I'm in the same boat so to speak.

The thing is some people do like to have the player character have some resemblance to them. More so when belonging to a group that doesn't get portrayed in the lead so much, if at all.

Some people also like to be able to identify with a character, and that's easier to do the more you share in common with them.  Especially the basics.

It's also a lot easier to do this when doing this is the exception rather than the rule. "I get to play as a character that I can easily identify with all the time, so I don't mind playing as one I don't from time to time" is very different from, "I have to play with a character I don't identify with all the time, so it's amazing when I get to play with one I do from time to time".

You don't have to be rude, you know <_<

Different people enjoy different things, and I never said I only play games with female protagonist, on the contrary, just like you, I can enjoy a game no matter who's the lead. I just finished AC 4, having a lot of fun terrorizing the British , and I felt Edward is a very believable and tragic character.

For me, female protagonist is just a feature I happen to love very much, and the only game I can't play without it is in RPG games, because Bioware spoiled me :P

I hope this clarified my  point, like I said, English is not my first language, and that post about power fantasy was just my failed attempt at humor. :pinched:

Since we're talking a little about God of War here, I'd like to chime in.  I've played the series and I can sum up the reaction my husband and I had to Kratos pretty simply.  Please bare in mind that this is mostly for comedic purposes and I know the plots go a lot deeper than this:

God of War 1: Wow, poor bastard.  Huh, Ares is a jerk, and Zeus isn't much better.  If you keep it in your pants, Zeus, you might not be creating these all-mighty children that have a tendency of hating your guts.  I feel for this Kratos guy, let's go kick some god a**.

God of War 2: Er, what's up Kratos?  So you're angry and bored and decide to screw around because you're angry and bored.  Now Zeus has booted your butt out of Olympus, and you decide to team up with the Titans because you're a douche.  Uh, you're starting to lose me.

God of Ward 3: Okay, we can't call this guy an anti-hero anymore.  He's on a crazy bloodbath and trying to kill everything.  This...doesn't feel great to play.  The story is still good, but this feels like I'm playing a really psychotic villain.   Time to see this through until the end.  I've made it this far, but I'm not cheering for Kratos anymore.  In fact, I rather want him dead.

And that's fine, I have no problem with that.  Characters like Kratos are one of the joys of being a gamer.  Everyone can look at the him and his motivations differently.   :D

I'll give him this: He was interesting; the games were a nice twist on the "revenge" story; and I was curious to see his ending.  I was just sharing the opinion that my husband and I formed over the course of the games.

Halo Reach did that too, with your created characters, and each one could be male or female if you wanted to and it was completely acknowledged in the story and cutscenes. It was a nice change, especially for a shooter.

Yeah, Halo is a Shooter franchise with some RPG aspects imo.

True, but the way he acted removed any sympathy he would have gotten from the event.

I was more upset that he somehow just oneshots the Greek goddess of war without even any gameplay involved  <_< God of War's gameplay was fun, but I didn't like Kratos or the game's casual misogyny.

Oh don't worry, we were facepalming at that one too.  I grew up reading a lot of both Greek and Roman mythos (they aren't always 100% the same in their stories) and that just irritated me.   Also, I think the words, "Oh give me a f***ing break," came out of our mouths.

My first facepalming came from the....sex time QTE(psp version), it's by no means offensive, just so....juvenile. I mean, what's the point? It's not funny or arousing, why even include those in the game?

Thanks :D

And yeah, as a lover of Greek/Roman mythos, I lost interest after finishing the first game.

If I want a fun hack&slash, i'd play Devil May Cry. Dante is wayyy more likable than Kratos as a character ( the DmC Dante, however, is NOT)

lol great minds think alike. :)

Yeah, considering Athena/Minerva is my favorite of the Greek/Roman Gods and Goddesses(and the only one deserving of the title in my opinion since none of the other main gods and goddesses have godly qualities, with the exception of maybe Hades/Pluto ), I was really peeved at the scenario.

The God of War games aren't half as self-aware or clever as they think they are. A lot of games are like that.

For example: Since I'm a guy I can better relate to, or see myself as the male lead. While puppofwar would better relate to, or see herself in a female lead.

I think anyone can relate to anyone, if the story is told well enough. However, people still need to see stories about people like them.

I'm glad they toned down the whiteness of that outfit but I can't believe that's what we're stuck with. I thought it at least had Isabela boots!

You can customise curtains but not the outfit you wear  :(
