I'm still convinced that its not really brown but mud stained and the Inquisitor refuses to wash it cause it's their lucky suit.

It's also a lot easier to do this when doing this is the exception rather than the rule. "I get to play as a character that I can easily identify with all the time, so I don't mind playing as one I don't from time to time" is very different from, "I have to play with a character I don't identify with all the time, so it's amazing when I get to play with one I do from time to time".

Perhaps but you're operating under the assumption that I  identify with them just because they are male.  I don't identify with 70% of the male characters I play as.

I think anyone can relate to anyone, if the story is told well enough. However, people still need to see stories about people like them.

I have no problems identifying with male protagonists in well told stories.  Whether thats because I've had little choice for the most part or whether the stories are just good enough for me to overcome any disconnection I might possibly have, I'm not really sure.

Noice.

Apart from the slight "what you talkin' about Willis?" look she has.

For those interested, here's a Q&A  with AWR, the British voice of femquisitor, from earlier today

Really interested Q&A. I particularly liked this part

BioWare has been focusing on equality and diversity, more now than ever. Did that affect the way you’ve portrayed the female Inquisitor?
Not really, no. She’s a woman. I’m a woman. Women can be many things, as can men, and surely in 2014 we can move beyond the idea of “the Male Inquisitor is one thing while the Female Inquisitor is another”? Essentially and progressively, Bioware wrote one character and had a man (Harry) and a woman (me) voice the character…. The fans will decide with sex they want to play as… Surely that’s the very definition of equality?

I agree with this assessment of equality, in an ideal world, I'd love to see more characters who are simply written, rather than written as male or female.  This is one of the reasons why I love BioWare games or graphic novels like Leaving Megalopolis, the main characters gender makes little difference to the character's personality.

The only issue with this, is that male is still seen as default by many writers, so there is still a need to make the gender of a character a conscious decision but there is no need for a characters gender to affect their personality.

She forgot to mention Jon Curry and Sumalee Montano when pointing out voices.

I'm glad they toned down the whiteness of that outfit but I can't believe that's what we're stuck with. I thought it at least had Isabela boots!

You can customise curtains but not the outfit you wear  :(

I wish I had the whiteness back to be honest. Mudbrown looks wrong on most skintones.... and what happened to the shiny golden arms? I thought that was different and cool...

Hi there - I think what she was saying is that the roles were originally written for those two, and that Jon and Sumalee were added after. Hope that clarifies!

I'm... not really sure what's going on with the casual outfit at this point. :?

It did look whiter in previous shots, and we know from the PS4 livestream with Mike Laidlaw and Mark Darrah that your armor can get dirty, so maybe it looks brown because the Inquisitor hasn't visited the Inquisitorial shoe shiners in a while?

There's also the war table screenshot where an elf Inquisitor appears to be wearing different boots and gloves (and the sleeves of the outfit appear to be made of metal) and the Hinterlands E3 demo where the Qunari Inquisitor's version of the casual clothes under her armor seems to be made of a metallic gold fabric.

Maybe the outfit has just gone through a lot of variations? Either way, there's still potential for a future patch or DLC to add more options.

I avoid white clothes in RL because I'm 100% convinced I'm going to ruin them somehow, it makes no sense and I know it's weird but that avoidance carries over to video game attire. I take your point about skin tones though. A nice grey brocade would have been a better universal choice imo, mid range greys work for most skin tones.

Except grey Qunari :< They should just let us dye it if we can't choose anything else.

So I just got on my xbox tonight and saw an add for DAI with a picture of the Female Inquisitor with a tag line under it said something along the lines of 'Choose your Hero' I haven't watched the whole thing yet due to a lot of lagging but it looks like it briefly touches on being able to make your Inquisitor but seems to focus mainly on some of the companions. Still nice to see the lady PC pasted right on the front though.

(and on an unrelated note I know now I'll have to romance Iron Bull on mute sadly :/)

Yep there's a lady PC on the front and then not in the trailer, with two possible ambiguous moments, at the very start is a female inquisitor judging by the walk (she moves away from screen with her back to the camera) and possibly (almost probably) a lady qunari inquisitor in the shot where Sera talks about killing someone. The rest looks like the same male inquisitor Cameron Lee seems to like running around with... sigh, I got my hopes up when I saw the picture at the front but it's definitely not a lady inquisitor kicking ass vid :(  though male inquisitor gets too kick ass and talk to companions. Actually even the companions get to be awesome, kick ass and funny (especially Dorian and Sera) so yeah...

Don't mind me, I'm just wishing for an action packed lady inquisitor trailer/vid so I'm a little disappointed at the moment.

Yeah I noticed that too in between the lagging, I watched it again thinking I just missed her the first time but I don't think I saw maybe more than one shot of the Female PC which is sad, it was also a shame that the 'building your own Inquisitor' only boiled to classes no talk of the different races or gender there again. Nice to see her on the front of the ad but a big shame to not see her in the actual ad.

Yeah the 'building your inquisitor' thing is actually somewhere between disappointing and annoying to me now... I think it's starting to taunt me because I would like to see hem talk about choosing your race and gender as well as just the classes. Also skin colours other than white would be nice to see shown off too... especially since they actually look great in the new engine, just saying show off more of what you can really do already.  :P

Agreed that is really starting to annoy me too. They are offering different races and genders along with classes why not market it all? Just put a line in of it with the classes. I really hope in the next DA game (since I'm guessing there won't be a ton more trailers for this one since release date is pretty close) that they market those choices and the CC. Making our own character is interesting and should be shown and marketed more often and I really really doubt that somehow showing that you can do those things will scare off a ton of people. I apologize if I'm sounding angry I'm just a little annoyed and tired.

I have no problems identifying with male protagonists in well told stories.  Whether thats because I've had little choice for the most part or whether the stories are just good enough for me to overcome any disconnection I might possibly have, I'm not really sure.

Most stories however aren't well told they're average or below average I wouldn't say I go out of my way to identify with male hero 1 billion, since I either play as him or don't play at all. Its really a matter of do I want to be in this world the game says it offers if yes then I'll give it a try but the more bland he is the less enjoyment I'll get, I can do a few things playing a male 1.pretend I'm his invisible helper, shadow, alternative personality, or protector, 2 find any little thing at all even just cuz I like his hair color to pretend I'm him, 3. if he's actually well written or written in a way that has more of my own persona traits it easier for me to actually role play in his shoes here, I can just go ok I'll become dude 1billion in every way possible but there is always something that forces me to disassociate with him like banging/lusting over his girlfriend or making a choice I wouldn't like torture dude for info, or 4. avoid all the effort it takes to keep my male hat on by playing more games in the same genres or if given a choice (which is most prefered) the same exact game I love but as women her color doesn't matter her persona could bug me a bit if we're really opposites but at least 98% of time I feel instantly more comfortable playing as a woman in the world then a man, instantly more intuned with the game world, and instantly more confident in my character's abilities or flaws, I'm also more invested emotionally in what is going on narrative wise if Amanda had been Adam with Alien Isolation wouldn't have been the same it would've had a slight flavor change in my male hero must hide from enemies that he can't kill and that's pretty rare but that would be the only difference there it also would've been less scary. My male side is tired of being ingauged all the time it would like a break and my brain would like to not work twice as hard to convince me I'm a man, rpgs let me do that most of time but my other genres don't equally as much, I'd rather just play awesome games as a woman like if I can play Ciri in the next Witcher (even though I do not like her book self) her portions will still be more compelling and immersive for me then Geralt has been the entire series at this point I'm a Witcheress trapped in a Witcher's body so it can make things not as enjoyable as they should be.

I just really hope BW will now implement advertising their fem hero and if they have races/species those too for all future and upcoming games like ME4 and its series or trilogy from day 1 start advertising femhero just as much as malehero in all the same avenues and media spots don't just toss her on at odd hours or on the internet only spots.

BW is showing with DAI that they can do it and with what they've done I hope their numbers really reflect their effort its way more then what was done with ME3's fshep but being sure to cover (not just tap) all the same bases as the male's advertising campaign will do is very important maximize her exposure like you do (by default) with his. And mentioning species at points in narrative where applicable in the ads if you outright can't show all of them trailer by trailer would also work or just dedicate a trailer to specifically customization and species so players who look into games have the ability to see what they'll be getting.

But for players who aren't looking up details, gameplay vids, and only can or want to see CG epic trailers then make sure she's shown equally in her own trailers at good advertising channels and times as the male hero is make she she's visible in her own trailers, shows agency, strength, and courage. Make sure that its communicated very clearly the chick you're seeing and hearing is the hero not a sidekick  or LI for the male hero you saw yesterday. I can understand why BW is having some troubles advertising this point of hero selection I can't really recall past games doing this I think the only other game trying to communicate this is that silly zombie energy drink one (forgot the title)

State of Decay does this simply by saying you can be any survivor then showing off male and female heros in cool shots and with gameplay, The Division is failing spectacularly they had one little box and a confirmation in a thread you can be a woman, but no one is trying serious movie style like BW is maybe at the end of both male and female trailers you need to place and hold for a few moments the concept art of male and female inquisitors maybe even have words showing which image is male and which is female then say/write become your hero and show the game's release date this way no matter which trailer you see you can visibly see you have hero choice. People need to see her trailers to know she's there, there is only so much my word of mouth can do for strangers and if you aren't seeing her trailers because they're so few or its too hard to discern its even her or she's involved in some parts of a complete advertising campaign but not the full package then these potential buyers may miss her think they misheard me and not buy the game no one wants that so she needs the full package just as much as he already has it.

Jesus f. christ get a load of the posts in this thread: http://forum.bioware...n-femfrequency/

Is this is still the de facto unofficial feminist thread of the bsn? I know I've called some of you extremists before but maybe we need extremists to fight extremists
