I really don't understand the ongoing flogging of Anita Sarkeesian and her work.
I've watched her videos, and my interpretation of all of them is that she is pointing out the existence (and overuse) of tropes that can be problematic. I don't believe she has ever indicated or even implied that there is never a legitimate reason to use any of these tropes - but that seems to be one of the many (mis)interpretations of her work out there.
IIRC, the DAO clip was used as an example of cruel brutality toward women - which it is. As someone else suggested, racism toward elves is also inherent in that particular scene, but that does not change the fact that the scene features sexual violence against women. As near as I can tell, that is the only thing she was trying to illustrate with it.
Using a snippet or clip from a work as an example is not generally intended to be a thorough analysis of that work in its original context.
That there are more egregious examples she could have used does not invalidate the suitability of the clips she did choose. That she has perhaps played hundreds of games does not mean she is intimately familiar with every game ever made.
I saw someone once accuse her of lying about whether she is a gamer - saying one thing and then another. I can honestly say that if I were asked whether I am a gamer, the answer would depend on who is asking and the context. I have spent thousands of hours playing various games - but I know full well that my gaming experiences would not meet some people's standards or definition of "gamer".
I've watched a few minutes of some of the youtube responses to her videos, and have seen little more than strawmen. Videos with words like "debunked", "proof", etc. in the titles that do nothing but set up strawmen and then proceed to disprove things she never said in the first place - and/or assassinate her character.
In any case, DG once responded to a question about her work here: http://dgaider.tumbl...-writing-tropes
And recently responded to John Epler's twitter exchanges with someone else here: http://dgaider.tumbl...u-either-havent
In any case, she has called attention to some of the problems in the way women are treated in the gaming world - and I am glad of it.
