I don't think they should mix male and female player characters in the same trailer. Or at least not in one of the story trailers. I think that would be a bit confusing to anyone not familiar with the game or following the news for it, and they wouldn't realize that the two characters are actually different versions of the same character.
If you're going to do trailers with both male and female versions of the player character I think it's best to split them into separate ads.

That's a good idea. But of course "too much work" and they go and show the typical route.

I know you're being sarcastic, but it's really not. As long as they're only using one PC model, it's the same amount of work.

I think what's unnatural is game companies strictly adhering to the cookie cutter mold of "athletic but not body builder straight white guy with short dark hair and stubble or a short beard." I feel like they restrict themselves to focus test guy out of fear that the dudebros out there wont buy any other kind of protagonist. Even if you want to argue that Thedas is a historically accurate medieval European society (lmao) medieval Europe did have immigrants from other places living there.
They probably do if the film industry is any indication. But unlike films, (which are a worse offender) there's no real impetus to really deviate from the status quo either. And you really can't tell when it's natural and when it's not because even indie games seem to feature primarily white protagonists.
If a game was made primarily by people of a different ethnicity, or the protagonist is different due to story reasons-being an outsider/the setting of the game or if someone just decided the game would sell better/such a protagonist just fits the theme well; then yes those would be reasons.
I don't mean Thedas is historically accurate, Europe doesn't even exist in it. I mean the theme of the setting is a European one, with primarily white people, especially the places the protagonist comes from, and in the first game- your freakin family unless you're mage. I never said it was impossible or wrong if they featured an Indian protagonist, but the most probable ethnicity is naturally white. Unless the story was about an immigrant outsider or something.
Morrowind did this really well: You arrive by prison ship from an unspecified place and when a guard asks you where you're from it begins the character creator. It's also much more multicultural and the European themed people are just colonial forces there. So a non white person on the box art? Totally natural. In fact I think that was the case and the most common promotional images featured Dunmers, which are the natives and borrow heavy elements from Native Americans, although they don't look alot like them, since they're elves.
But hooray they don't look like pointy eared white people either.

So how much you wanna bet the upcoming "Inquisitor" trailer will be a white human dude?
I really hope it shows more than just that.
Every companion trailer ends with that inquisitor so I'm not sure this is something that's even up in the air enough to be worth betting on.

I didn't pay enough attention to notice if the Inquisitor was male, female or gender-neutral.

Yesterday I saw on youtube by AngryJoe, a guy who does game reviews on youtube, show some gameplay of DAI. I would post the link, but it has major spoilers in it. Anyways, he chose his class as an archer. I was very impressed seeing the archer in action. The abilities were nice. He was playing on the Xbox One. He was playing on nightmare difficulty. I only mention this since I believe a few folks will play as a female archer. For me, after seeing the video, I will play as an archer for my 2nd playthrough. My first will be as a mage.

It was clearly male. Just the walking, the wide shoulders and all that.

I gotta admit the archer is sounding more attractive to me every day. I was going to go warrior but a rogue archer does sound pretty sweet too.

There's always Beatrix (3 syllables), Alix, Leatrix (again, three syllables), Phoenix or Perdix.

I don't really see why everyone is making a big fuss over it, any female who plays games will have heard of Dragon Age and if they aren't on board with it that's probably due to disinterest. People know how progressive DA is. So why advertise at all? The answer: to draw in the last drops of the market, primarily white males. They are the dominant demographic within gamers so it shouldn't come as a surprise that most of the trailers show a white male.

My problem with playing an archer is that I thin kI'm going to be taking Sera and Verric with me most of the time...which seems unwise. ![]()
Yeah there are some otome style games that let you customize your character, but very few have a lot of customization and are in English...I do recommend Magical Diary though. It's basically Hogwarts as a life/dating sim with some puzzles and it's really fun. Plus you can date ladies in it too.
Wait, what now? That sounds amazing!

Start Here, and go educate yourself. Or heck, just go a few pages back to get actual statistics on market sectors in the game industry. (Spoilers: there are more women over 35 than boys under 18 who game. And guess what? Our wallets are bigger than yours, so we're a demographic marketers should be laying out the red carpet for).
Or browse this very thread and see how many of us didn't know you could play Mass Effect as a female character, and became enthusiastic new consumers when we found out.

It is super cute/fun/awesome. I got it in a Steam sale for 5$ and it's actually the only game I have all the achievements for. ![]()
It's essentially a one woman indie developer who makes it, so at full price you're paying $15 dollars for a 3 hour game that has pretty good replayability (Just looked and I have 18 hours on it), but still I think that's something people should know up front. I'm all about supporting small games, especially if they're awesome and made by women, but I get that other people might not think that's enough bang for their buck.
EDIT: There's a demo, rad! I def recommend checking it out ![]()
Another really fun game of hers is Long Live the Queen, if you're heard of that one. You can't customize your character's appearance, but it's another one of those visual novel/rpg/sim type games and it's not focused on dating, but taking the throne of a country. Yay for ladies making games about ladies.
(Another awesome one is Christine Love, highly recommend her visual novels, which are so darn clever and well written)
