It is super cute/fun/awesome. I got it in a Steam sale for 5$ and it's actually the only game I have all the achievements for.

It's essentially a one woman indie developer who makes it, so at full price you're paying $15 dollars for a 3 hour game that has pretty good replayability (Just looked and I have 18 hours on it), but still I think that's something people should know up front. I'm all about supporting small games, especially if they're awesome and made by women, but I get that other people might not think that's enough bang for their buck.

EDIT: There's a demo, rad! I def recommend checking it out :)

Another really fun game of hers is Long Live the Queen, if you're heard of that one. You can't customize your character's appearance, but it's another one of those visual novel/rpg/sim type games and it's not focused on dating, but taking the throne of a country. Yay for ladies making games about ladies. :) (Another awesome one is Christine Love, highly recommend her visual novels, which are so darn clever and well written)

I liked that game also; I originally checked it out because of a nice review. Actually, I think that site's articles are one of the things that led me to try the DA series as well.

Also, after that last gender-in-games article, I started wondering: what exactly is 'arcade' as a genre, anyway?

Start Here, and go educate yourself.  Or heck, just go a few pages back to get actual statistics on market sectors in the game industry.  (Spoilers:  there are more women over 35 than boys under 18 who game.  And guess what?  Our wallets are bigger than yours, so we're a demographic marketers should be laying out the red carpet for).

Or browse this very thread and see how many of us didn't know you could play Mass Effect as a female character, and became enthusiastic new consumers when we found out.

Okay how many men age 18 and older are there?

As someone who is a man over 18, I can certainly say that seeing nothing but straight white dudes has never been something I'm particularly fond of.

Variety is the spice of life, and if women make up 50 percent of the population, they deserve more representation.

I don't really see why everyone is making a big fuss over it, any female who plays games will have heard of Dragon Age and if they aren't on board with it that's probably due to disinterest. People know how progressive DA is. So why advertise at all? The answer: to draw in the last drops of the market, primarily white males. They are the dominant demographic within gamers so it shouldn't come as a surprise that most of the trailers show a white male.

Agreed. Much like I'm tired of seeing the same companions in the forefront.

It gets tiresome seeing the same thing over and over and over.

At least most people on this thread didn't know because they hadn't bought the game.

I bought the first ME1 when I saw trailers for ME2 because I wanted to play through it first and didn't realise until my SECOND play through of ME1 that I could play as a female Shepard.

I was just so used to being a guy in games like ME that I didn't notice the option in the character creator.

That first play through as been my one play through with male Shepard and he has yet to complete the trilogy, he only made it to ME2 because of Miranda   and I've more femsheps to complete the trilogy with before I get to him.

I'm really glad to see that BioWare are randomizing the the default gender for DA:I, I think it will really increase the likely hood that people will play a female character.

Ok, I talked to a female gamer recently. She had NO clue didnt even see or read or know anything about Dragon Age being capable of female protag with first trailer viewed. She asked me what games there are, I pointed her to take look at Inquisition, but make sure to see a gameplay video so can be aware there are females in it. Otherwise.....another female player would have walked away from another game, not knowing till way after it was released, causing Bioware to loose money. She is buying it now.   So, yes, without a trailer of a female for her in the first trailer she saw, had shot this game out the window till I talked to her.

There are so many women out there that may buy this quicker if it gets stated in a trailer. I prefer the back cover to at least say, CAN PLAY EITHER MALE OR FEMALE, YOUR CHOICE. The cover with no character and just a symbol would help.  That would help eliminate running into another woman later that didnt know about it.

I agree here. :D   I actually stopped playing most male protagged games because of being tired of playing males almost all the time in past. Quite bored of them. Do something new, a female would change the story pretty easily versus another male protag.  Or like someone else said.....More RPGs cause they tend to allow female capable play. :)

8-12 more days until DAI for me at least. Not looking forward to the walk there (damn asthma) but very much looking forward to finally getting to make my Valeria Cadash~

Ahem sorry, I agree with wanting to see a trailer of the female PC still that really shows her not a distant shot at the end for a split second not just a voice over not putting her on the thumb nail then mostly focusing on a male PC with quick shots of her from behind I want a trailer to focus on her and show what a bad ass she can be. Why? Because people who aren't previous DA fans wouldn't know you can play as female from the trailers they saw so far and its very doubtful that a lot of them would look up demo videos for it as well, and yes as 'silly' as it seems to some people being able to choose your own gender is a make or break for them when thinking of buying a game and its important to show that choice is available when you have it. Like some others have mentioned before and I mentioned a while ago using ME as an example I didn't pick up the game until I saw some fan art of the many different Shepards you could make since all I heard or saw about was the default male Shepard. As another example I showed a trailer of Inquisition to a friend of mine after telling them a little about the last two games and she seemed disapointed with the trailer because they thought that you had to play as the man that was shown and when I explained to them that wasn't the case they asked if there was any trailers showing that wasn't the case when I told them none that I know of they very reasonably asked why not. (Please note this was before the trailer that had the brief shot of the female Inquisitor at the end)

Hey I went out and got a moment to skim through some magazines, the Game magazine has some really nice pics of DAI but none of fem inquisitor the only plus here was that the article creator played the demo as her and said you could be her while that was great I had to read almost all the article to find a mention of her and then they referred to her as THE inquisitor. The next one I picked up was playstation 4 mag and I didn't have time to read that article so based on skimming of both picks and captions there was nothing so if I was a consumer looking for a game with a fem hero I'd be hard pressed skimming through either article to find that out on looks alone this was why I was ready to call it quits with the division until I noticed the barley there box that said in type 1 font I could be a girl in this game. Infact both magazines were man fest even with games I know had options the only exceptions was life is strange, borderlands the prequel and alien (all in PS4 mag) and alien ad in Game mag but that's only because they had to show those and the odd thing with life is strange they chose photos of the blue haired friend that could've easily had her mistaken for a dude if I didn't know or didn't have time to read the attached article I would be unaware of the fact its 2 girl characters.

I'd suggest next game (as again its too close to launch day with this one) BW needs to send pictures of fem hero in great CG or ingame render along to be used in articles with the expressed tag of must also use this with male hero shots and state this is fem hero or do charts like that lovely one you guys made up showcasing both heros, weapons, and cool features that was nice or the dark blur shots of fem and male hero that we were all really liking pages and pages back where they were holding the swords or their CG poster style renders with the images we've got in this thread there were options and if you make similar promo material for the next game you'll still have options.

Thats a lot of assumptions going on in there. No 90% of the women I talk to on games knows nothing about DA  and less about ME's option. I asked a nurse recently who saw my playing my psp in the waiting room and struck up a gaming conversation with me back in the room what games she liked she listed a few titles then I said have you heard about DA or ME and she said yes to ME but was disappointed fem shep was only in the third game which I then had to correct her on. She said she wish she could play a midevil game as a woman I said DA is perfect she knew nothing of the game nor the option to be the fem hero. I run into men who also don't know this fact. If BW shouldn't be bothered to advertise their fem hero they should stop advertising their male one because everyone knows male is defult and in every single game that has a human lead save a few exceptions however BW advertising at a 50/50 split with this game and men freak out asking and fretting over can I be a man? Wow you don't see him 100% of the time and you're worried? Women usually don't even get that courtesy from the 90's till now if you have the option to play as a woman more likely then not you won't be told about it for anything other then your friends, you checked wikkia after the game came out, you found some obscure fan on youtube that said so and you guessed it buy the game and findout $60 - $100 for roulette on can I even play my gender in this world? That's why lots of women wait till sales happen, even more so that most retail stores devalue your game the moment it hits your hand you can't do exchanges half the time and don't even ask for a full cash refund they'll make you trade it in.

Males are the dominate demographic or is it only so because the industry created the one sided demand via constant ideal reinforcement? A simple pull of FB data in 2014 shows console gamers are pretty much even

Women also made up 40% of the console gamers in 2011. And we already knew this from the 80's but people keep forgetting the more inclusive you are in game design, themes, and characters the more both sexes play your game. Studies done on children who make games found out girls make games inclusive of even boys adding in male characters just in case they'd like to enjoy their space game boys exclude girl by thinking only boys play and only boys will want to play their spy game. Classes then picked the games they liked more picked the girls games because the character variety it offers but they did most enjoy the themes presented for the boy games so what do we learn from this? You can have male themed games but make sure you have multiple characters and consider the fact girls are playing your game and be sure to make sure themes, situations, and experiences can be tailored to their likes as well it maybe a shock but men and women can like alot of similar things so you only need to then get creative on the little things.

I'm surprised at how male dominated mmos are, and how female dominated board and world games are. Incidentally, just what are world games?

Also, what would Animal Crossing fit under?
