Or browse this very thread and see how many of us didn't know you could play Mass Effect as a female character, and became enthusiastic new consumers when we found out.

*raises hand*

One more here. For years I had discounted Mass Effect as just another Space Marine shooter game with generic macho white guy no.346 as the main character. It wasn't until I discovered, quite by accident, that there was so much more to the game than that, that I became interested enough to actually give it a first look. By this time ME3 had been out for so long already that even the trilogy box set had become dirt cheap. Which was, of course, good news for my wallet, but had I known about these things from the start I would have bought the games years ago, at full price, and they would have made six times the money off me that they have now.

And I loved being able to, for once, play a badass woman whose badassness is not once questioned just because she's a woman. Who doesn't have to prove herself to everyone she meets because "I didn't think women could". It's been a pleasure to meet and fall in love with all these wonderful characters that are so alive and watch my Shepard go through this amazing epic story of good and evil and love and loss.

Buying ME is one of the best gaming decisions I have ever made, and I almost never made it at all. But for a coincidence, I would have never known that this was a game I would love so much.

Start Here, and go educate yourself.  Or heck, just go a few pages back to get actual statistics on market sectors in the game industry.  (Spoilers:  there are more women over 35 than boys under 18 who game.  And guess what?  Our wallets are bigger than yours, so we're a demographic marketers should be laying out the red carpet for).

You know I didn't like the way you've implied that he's a kid. He may come across uninformed, but he that doesn't mean you should just demean him like that.

Yeah see I never even made it as far as reading articles about it, it appealed to me that little. I think it was only because I looked into Dragon Age (which also took me a lot longer than it could have but I was interested in more easily because it's an RPG) that I found out more information about ME.

Very true. A game or movie has to spark your interest before you'll research it and if it presents itself as a generic, fixed straight white man protagonist shooter or hack n slash I'm not going to look farther. I can honestly say I've never been tempted to read an article on games like CoD or Gears of War or Battlefield.

After hearing Sumalee Montano in the stream today, she is definitely going to be the main female voice I use.

The quality voice acting talent they have lined up for Inquisition, is in itself, enough to squee over.

It's like having smooth velvety goodness poured into your ears.

I keep hearing that the voices have been released, but I haven't found any videos. Would someone mind linking me? I want to hear this velvety goodness, please!

Here is the one with Sumalee Montano. However fair warning, it is the prologue of the game so will have spoilers.

Yeah I brought ME solely because I saw the mako and went, " I can explore planets like star treck? Cool!" I was prepared to play as a guy but then when booting up the game I saw fshep as an option and went, " I can be a girl?....Awesome!"

Dammit Kallen, I've been resisting the urge to watch this all day and now not only do you post the link to it, you tell me it's the only way I'll hear Sumalee's Inquisitor voice.

Must resist urge to watch......need to remain story spoiler free.

sorry I'm not buying those stats. If women were 40 percent of console gamers then companies would flock to them.

Not really.  The vast majority of games are still made by companies that are heavily male-dominated.  Even if the market is swaying away from being primarily male, the people making them are slower to follow.

There is also the fact that the risk-averse management making decisions often buys into the idea that women will buy things targeted towards men but not the other way around.

Take a look at the state of film right now.  Women make up the majority of the movie-going audience (52%) but only 15% of films star women.  This is despite the fact that female-led films do extremely well.  In fact, they make more money than male-led films.  Are we to conclude that these many different studies that are consistent with each other are wrong, and that women don't actually go to the movies?  Or should we conclude that even when women turn out in droves to pay for something, they still often aren't catered to?

Nope - companies, especially big ones with lots of money invested and shareholders to answer to are terrified of cocking-up, so in 99% of cases will fall back on what worked before, because everything is approved by committee. Smaller companies have the benefit of less people to please (and often less to lose financially) so tend to take more risks, which you can see if you look at the wider variety of games made by indie and start-up studios. If you want to look into the business side of things, Valve's Staff Handbook makes good reading.

Even if that weren't the case, stats from multiple sources support the numbers for women gamers, companies are just taking a while to figure out how to approach them since they can't fall back on old methods used for teenage boys and they tanked hard with things like making controllers pink.

Yeah the AAA companies doesn't want to take risks for fear of losing money. The indy devs can afford to be more creative when designing their games.

So much this.

Women are approaching parity as gamers, but as members of the industry... not so much. And we need parity in the industry - in development and marketing - to see change.

That's only for 2013 and I'm not big on the Bechedel Test.

So being a year old makes it outdated?

Only one of those links uses the Bechdel Test.  The study done by Martha M. Lauzen finding that women make up 15% of protagonists is not using the Bechdel Test.

While it's an imperfect measurement, and never really intended to be used scientifically, I do find the Bechdel Test a useful way to quickly look at where media could do better.

I never said it's outdated, is just that the article stated one year two movies based on female protagonists were the most sucessful. I thought it was going to be a longtime trend that was ignored by Hollywood. I don't like the Bechdel Test because it doesn't involve context when examining conversations. I also have a problem with people misusing it. The test is obviously flawed due to the fact It was only as a joke at first.

More data is needed, to be sure, but it does show that putting more female protagonists on the screen is not detrimental to sales.  At the very least, it shows that audiences do not care who the protagonist is, as long as the film is good. There is also this study that applies the Bechdel Test to films from 1990 to 2013 and found that films made more money for each criteria of the test that they passed.

Spoiler

But we're getting off-topic.  I only brought up the film industry as a comparison to the video game industry.
