 Height traitor.  I'll have to remember that.   Nice.

Muroka just had mixed feelings is all, and I can see where he's coming from.  I talk about supporting a non-white male PC all the time, but I haven't played one yet.  I sometimes feel bad about it too, but I'm not letting it bother me.  There's always a chance for later, when I roll up a second male character.  I figure that there's plenty of time to try new things.   :)

The classiest thing we can do is to show support here.  I'm glad he's willing to be honest with us, and his support for the female Inquisitor (as well as in some of the LGBT threads) is the part to focus on.  He isn't imposing his feelings on anyone else, so there's no need to come down on him so harshly.   These threads can be a place to learn and express ourselves in many ways.  Sometimes, just venting uncomfortable feelings is good for ya.

<hugs>  I can understand the confusion, but Muroka didn't mean any harm here.

For the record, playing a dwarf would make you a champion of the height challenged, rather than a traitor to tall people.  Not to mention that it would help telemetry and show BioWare that dwarves are a beloved race in their games as well.  Let's get those dwarven player numbers up!   :P

oh dont get me wrong im not attacking her but stuff can come across as... im trying to think of an annalogy.

like a Josh Fierstine video.

Yeah i support loads of stuff.

but a few things that have been spouted on the internet recently just make me wish for a real Blight

and a nice wall ro beat my head against.

heck if i didnt want more women i wouldnt post here.

Normalising it helps. Up until fairly recently I wasn't completely okay with my tendency to play female characters.

Normalizing playing female characters or even poc or LGBT characters is important.

Games with female protagonists or even games that just let you choose are still few & far between. And there are only a handful of games with poc protagonists and I can't think of any with an LGBT protagonist.

It is important that people realise it's ok to play a character that doesn't reflect you and letting yourself explore a personality in a game is a good thing.

I mean, people generally don't have an issue reading a book with a protagonists that is not their gender or race but some people have such an issue with playing a character in a game that isn't their gender or race.

Because I'm a huge proponent of more female representation in games and I feel like I'm sort of betraying that by playing a male when I'm given an option to not do that? It's a problem I've had for a while. I'll get over it.

This is going to sound harsher than I mean it to so please bear with me.

Play a game to have fun!  Does anyone else remember when they played games or went to watch a movie it was because they WANTED to and wanted to enjoy 2-3 hours for a movie or who knows how many hours for a game to just relax and have fun?

When did going to see a movie or playing a game suddenly start getting constrained by "well, I WANT to (watch or play) this, this way, but I feel like I am betraying an ideology because of this.)

Maybe I feel this way because I am techinically part of the old "status quo" being a (I am pretty sure) straight male but even then I am half Japanese, a 6'4" half Japanese guy that has certain predilections that are...  not "normal".  I am 100% positive though that even with that and even though I agree certain things in games (and movies) need more representation my first character is basically going to be me with no constraints which means it's these three guys mixed:

Peter-Quill.jpg

125tdoy.jpg

2968552-zaraki_kenpachi_by_krifiur.jpg

Are these three almost the complete OPPOSITE of what this thread is kind of asking for?  A thread which, I am pretty sure you go back into it I have supported pretty consistently for the most part...  You bet your ass they are the complete opposite but they are still an awesome character type to play a game as.  Essentially you get to do what you want, be as sarcastic/cynical/jerkish as you want, kill who you want whenver you want, and do whatever you want with whoever you want in bed.  Who doesn't wish they could kinda do that in real life once in awhile?

Games, and movies, to a lesser degree are supposed to be a chance to free yourself from what is going on in your life...  why feel this need to pigeon hole yourself into doing something in a game a certain way because of a fear of "betraying your beliefs"...  your beliefs are your beliefs, you aren't going to betray them based on something you do for fun in a game you will most likely largely play by yourself.

/what sounds kind of like a rant but isn't meant to be a rant.

Watched part of the Conan/FPJ stream (don't watch it unless you're cool with seeing new cutscenes/spoilers). I did not see much of it because of said spoilers but I noticed that while they are playing as a dude (Conan, to be specific....holy crap that CC is good, looks just like him), someone asked questions about the PC like "Can he do "x"?" and Cameron Lee responded with "He or she --because you can choose to play as a female Inquisitor as well--- can blah blah blah."

...just a simple thing, but was really lovely to see especially since this particular Twitch stream has a much higher profile. Thanks Cam <3

Hi, I'm curious about something

How did you guys feel about the intro in the Stream, I'll keep it spoiler free for those who haven't watched it, but I was taken aback by how many female characters there were.  I know that the DA universe , well specifically White Andrastians, are fairly matriarchal, and for some bits of the prologue I was scratching my head going "where are some dudes?".

The only three that had any real screen time were Varrick, Solas, and that Bureaucrat whom if he had a name I didn't notice.

Do you guys think this will be a trend for the game as a whole and is it something you want to see?

I'm going to be interested to see if there is an increase in players creating a female character in DA:I and if that increase can be attributed to not always having male as the default gender in the character creator

I'm curious about this too.

I know it wont impact my choice because with Bioware games i choose my sex based on voice acting. The voice actor i like better is the one i play. For me better voice acting of the protaganist is more important than what plumbing I have in relationship to my character.

I do wish there was an equal amount of marketing that shows the protaganist as both sexes. Its getting better than it was in the ME series, but its not quite there yet.

I am getting to love playing against type (different gender/sexual preference), hence why I think Bioware games are really good. Other games give me fairly ordinary protagonists in what can be good story, but its the same ol' same ol' in regard to the PC.  But yes, its a matter of doing what you enjoy and playing the role that gives you the most enjoyment, I don't think guilt should come into it, most people here realise representation is important but doesnt mean because you support that representation you should stop playing the style/game/protag you want.  Some people have come into this thread saying we want to abolish the type of protag they love from games, they are misinformed and lack serious reading comphrension.  This is not a vanguard thread, this thread just wants to see more people like themselves in the game, whether that be female, or GLBT.  Simple feedback and suggestion from fanseally.

In regard to enjoyment, for me, variety is the spice of life. Sometimes it would be nice to see the games industry actually incorporate that - we have a lot more older people gaming now (I'm actually old enough to be a grandmother... ahem) and if those gamers are anything like me I'm pretty bored of generic protagonists who if you took out of the setting would be pretty dull otherwise.

Gregolian, I didn't read your post as harsh or ranty, you pretty much said what I thought about it too.

I'm very interested to see stats similar to the PAX infographic for ME3

I expect male humans to still be the largest single group, but I wonder if they will be a flat out majority or if the distribution will be more equal

I'm pretty sure there are people who will try to shame you into preferring to play as a guy character. This thread isn't one of these people, once again all these people on BSN want is more representation of female characters. Me personally while I want a female character represented, I want more black people represented in future Bioware games.

Man, I just want more everything. Women, minorities, gay characters, bisexual characters, asexual characters, trans characters...

Inquisition is a ''huge'' step forward, as both a triple A game, and a BioWare game. And I really hope it's a sign of things to come.

I'd say its less of a huge step forward, and more of just another step.

ME3 had openly gay characters, female characters just as strong as male ones, minorities, etc...  Asexual and trans not so much, though I have heard argument for EDI as an asexual character since her and Joker's relationship can be entirely platonic.

ME3 had a lot of problems with other characters, and writing in general though.

The juries out on whether Inquisition will have those same problems, but still.

but not in representation.  Really the only step back that I think has valid complaints is Jacob.  Sure some dialogue was cringeworthy, and Traynor's shower scene was.....weird... but I don't think you can fault them for adding in those characters

No, I can't fault them for those characters. but I can think the way they were implemented was sloppy, and could have been much better.

and I'd agree up to a point.

Traynor could have had a better romance scene, and Jacob could not have been a walking stereotype.  But overall I feel that they were admirable additions.

Sorry but It's a bit weird question what could make them change their mind :\ like something will change if more people would play fshep? There are hidden benefits for someone if more players chose to play female hero? I was thinking gender option in character creation center is already given enough freedom to player to choose whom he wants to play 0_o

Yea it's personally not my thing to encourage male players to try female characters or anything. But could there be a hidden benefit if female characters end up being more popular across both genders? I dunno maybe. I might change my stance if it's what it takes to not have things like the god awful nutcracker ball costume.

I think the only hidden benefit is simply that the devs realize that the female character is something that many fans enjoy.  Mass Effect has gone from practically ignoring Femshep and treating her as a secondary option to, with ME4, creating the female build before the male one, and I think the fan response to Femshep really has a lot to do with that.  After all, when they're drawing up a budget and looking at where the resources should go, having hard numbers showing a significant amount of players picked the female option makes for a much stronger argument than "there were a bunch of people on the forums asking really really nicely for us to think about the female protagonist."

To Mukora and all you guys and gals who have supported this thread even though the female option isn't even one you'd personally make: you are all awesome.  You've fought for other people to play the kind of character they like, we'd be hypocrites not to do the same for you.

That said, I do think it's fun to play a character who is unlike yourself, and encourage people to give it a try.  I pretty much always roll a male character on my second playthrough.  I've also stopped limiting myself to only white characters, and my "canon" Femshep is a dark-skinned mixed race lady.

Is that really important though?  I can see that it'd be a good way to get around the awkward sitting positions that FemShep found herself in, but it doesn't strike me as a massive leap forward in representation.

I wasn't taken aback, namely because I think that most of the nameless/faceless mooks were male.

I wouldn't mind it being a trend, seeing as how it should be in-universe for most of Thedas to be somewhat Matriarchal, but to be completely honest I doubt it will be a trend.
