Had cosplaying been big with bioware games before DAO and was it something on the marketing radar do you think?

I honestly couldn't say.  I started in June 2009 so I was there at the very tail end of development and much of that stuff simply wasn't on my radar!

Very true. But I think that worked well with Shepard--anybody, with any face and hair, can wear N7 armour, and most people recognize them as Shepard. The armour is easily identifiable enough that the face does not matter. Origins lacked strong iconography in other respects--the only memorable symbols and outfits are the Blood Dragon armour and, I guess, the chantry symbol. There's no common "look" between any of the Wardens. I think the Inquisitor is much stronger from a marketing perspective.

That is fair and I think that the N7 is amazing. Recognizable yet low key.

Dragon Age doesn't have anything similar.

Do you think it would still work if Shepard wasn't human?

Yes, because no one else in the game wears that armor.

But if Shepard was actually a Krogan, wouldn't the costume just be incomplete?

This is part of the challenge because it's easy to say "yes" (or "no") but the reality of it is "we'll never know."

Sorry, but incomplete how? Do you mean that the actual silhouette of the armor would have to change since its Krogan

I'm saying that if the person didn't literally look like a Krogan, would it still be the same.  If you had two Commander Shepards beside each other, and one went with the full Krogan look and the other was just wearing the armor, would they still be appreciated the same?

If you're still struggling with what I am saying, try Garrus.  I find his Archangel outfit an identifying piece of equipment.  If someone cosplayed in that outfit, but didn't look like a Turian, would it still be the same?

So, I've seen that one drawing of the female inquisitor (the one with the guy and the gal), but is that official art?  If it isn't, is there any official art of a female inquisitor other than those concept art things (the ones where it's not immediately clear who the inquisitor is?

It's official art.  I've seen the concept art piece internally (as in literally hanging on the wall).

Just as a note: it's perfectly valid as well to say "I don't have enough information to make an assessment."

But I agree with the Sith: lets resume to on topic discussion.

I vote we return to discussing the female inquisitor in marketing images? :)

The character creator is now in.

It's not perfect, but we're super close to alpha which internally means "All intended game features are in and testable."  By testable that might mean "I tested it and it still has issues and needs refinement."

It is a lot easier and faster to make a single model independent of the character creator (and is necessary in some ways since refining things like the locomotion system are going to need assets quickly in order to be made in parallel).  Mostly because you can use some third party tool to create the mesh and import it into the game.  I don't know how well it would work if we required users to own Maya or 3ds max in order to create custom faces ;)

Yay! Do you think there's a chance BioWare might show us a little of how it works at E3? (I mean, obviously it is not up to you what they show, but if it's getting towards alpha maybe they'll at least open it up during a panel and go over some options?)

Fundamentally it's not impossible.  Whether or not it looks good enough to show is not something I am probably that qualified to say.  It could happen, but as expected I couldn't really confirm or deny.  Dozens and dozens of ideas going around for E3 related stuff.  Most of my work, however, has been on doing alpha checks rather than working on or with anyone that is a part of our E3 plans.

Sorry!

And based on my capabilities with 3dsmax, I'd expect a lot of default face Inquisitors :P

Or soon to be 3dsmax experts....

(However, if Inquisition sets my computer on fire, insults my mother and drinks the last of my milk, I am totally holding you responsible.)

Most of these things would be my fault.  Especially if it's chocolate milk.

That's just a list some person made, as far as I can tell.  I could make one, title it the same, and put Schwarzenegger movies in it.

The first comment:

"While ill admit I enjoy most of these movies, they wouldn't make my top 25 at all. There all romances for the most part. Where's the violence and the intrigue? The reality?"

I think imdb members. But I can be wrong. Who out there would rather watch "you've got mail" than "The Avengers?" My mom.

Not my Mom (we actually just watched the Avengers).  (It's not a voted list... it's literally someone posting what they think)

Here's part of the reality: people are socially influenced to like particular things (and to not like other things).  Ever see a woman get made fun of because they liked video games?  I have.  By boys and girls.  Do you think that that will affect what they do and do not like going forward?  I sure do.

A male nurse?  LOLOLOL.  Where I grew up people casually used the term "gay" to mean "stupid."  I think it's incorrect to assume that that doesn't help reinforce one's perception of the word, and all that it entails.

When we say "Women are the ones that like twilight" we're making social statements that girls are the ones supposed to like Twilight.  And only the girls (I have issues with Twilight for other reasons... and so do a lot of women actually).

But to use words like "the majority" is interesting.  My Mom hates twilight (it's stupid to her).  I have some women friends that really like it, but because it's so silly and absurd.  I PVR'd the first one to watch it one time (since I hadn't seen any of them), and my roommates deleted it because it was obviously recorded accidentally.

It works the other way too.  I think there's much more concern in big budget entertainment that "if we market to women, men won't come" while "if we market to men, the women will still come."  Which is unfortunate (and damned if I know how to fix it).  So you get chicken and egg problems I find.

My mom thinks Avengers stupid move for kids and video game to."You grown up and still play games"

I never saw women made fun for playing video game my sister play video games. In my environment is made fun for just playing games. Only kids play video games mentality.

Perhaps part of the problem is drawing conclusions from your own experiences and assuming they reflect reality? (This is a human flaw that we all have, including myself).

"Only kids play video games" is the same thing, just applied to a different grouping of individuals.  There are still some that see "games are for kids."  Those people are wrong and the ignore that most gamers are not kids.  It doesn't stop those people from thinking it.

And about Twilight do you honestly think Twilight is not made for teen girls and watched by teen girls. I have very reliable poll my sister and her friends.

I'm saying that even if Twilight is made for teen girls, it doesn't reflect that only teen girls enjoy it (they don't), nor does it mean that a teen girl cannot enjoy it.  I'd argue it positions to a very specific type of demographic, but even within that demographic generalizations still fall apart.  For instance, teen girls that like it because they think it's an idealized romance story for women, versus teen girls that like it because they find angsty romance a hilarious form of escapist entertainment.

I can't say if it is or is not "the majority."  A lot of teen girls love Harry Potter too (as do teen boys, and adult men and women... and so forth).

Huh.

Dunno if this has been brought up, but I tend to think that if and when girls are insulted or whatever for playing video games, (which is something I've never seen), it would be because the boys who play them feel like they're getting 'pity attention' with the implication that they couldn't hold the interest of a girl otherwise. And resent what they see as being looked down upon.

I would imagine that to be reason behind 'Fake Gamer Girl' stuff. Not any notion of games being an 'Old Boys Club.'

There will be men that go "HOLY GRAIL OF WOMEN" and treat the woman as a goddess because she's a girl and a gamer.  They just want to shower that woman with affection and attention because they're so special.

You'll get people that dislike the idea because it's women bringing "women things" into gaming, or being dismissive because "you're a girl you likely wouldn't understand this thing."

In both cases it's uncomfortable treatment based purely on the fact that someone is a woman.  "Woman" becomes the defining trait that people see, not "person" or "gamer" or something like that.  Both provide fuel for vindictive perspectives too.  "How dare she not appreciate my attention?  I would love for someone to give me that type of attention" or "How dare she encroach on my space and seek to change the things about games that I like!"

And yes, you'll get some that feel that "Fake Gamer Girl" perception where they take the idea that women don't really like games, but feign an interest because it'll get men to do stuff for them.  In essence, taking advantage of the men that see them as holy grails of potential girlfriends.

Much as I hate to say it...the stereotype is probably at least somewhat true. That male 'geeks' or 'nerds' or whatever are shy and awkward around girls and tend to be somewhat insecure in general.

I think this is influenced by how we apply labels.  I identify much more as "geek" instead of, say, "athlete."  But in high school, most people that only knew me superficially knew me as the guy that loved basketball.

I still remember when my Grade 11 team got together to play GoldenEye and I would win games 20/2/3/2 and then came the handicaps (I'd still win ;)).  People were floored at my gaming proficiency.  Then I'd win Skills Canada awards for computers and people were "Wha!?"

To anyone that knew me though?  I was a geek with a computer, N64, PSX, and subscriptions to PC Gamer, Ultragameplayers, and Next Generation magazines.  (And SLAM magazine... lol)

Gaming is a cool hobby... in some circles. In my line of work, gaming is not an acceptable hobby.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't appreciate that my job affords me a large amount of assurances that no one will judge me for my gaming :)

(It's not a coincidence that most people in high school knew me as "Basketball guy" instead of "Gamer guy" either)

Im not really sure it was a mistake, the game manuals for both games were inside but not the disks, felt like a deliberate way to make it difficult for me

I have seen some places that will remove the discs from the boxes to reduce theft. I would get the discs put in the box when I paid.

I was desperately trying to be optimistic.  Of course, even if it was intentionally gender-neutral, two classes that are clearly masculine and one that is neutral isn't exactly spectacular.  But seriously, they have three classes, and not one of the examples could have been female?

Actually, I'm going through the official site, and I don't see the Femquisitor anywhere at all.  I thought I heard someone say they were starting to add her.  Am I missing something?

The lack of Femquisitor on the official page was brought up earlier in this thread, actually.  I think there's been hints that there will be Femquisitor focused content coming soon, but I'm not 100% sure what's been said - it was probably via Twitter.  I think there's still only been a few places where she's been shown recently.

Herr Schumacher, do you know if other BioWare people ever read this thread?  Or are you our sole champion?  I don't mean to imply that you are in any way inadequate in that capacity, but one man's shoulders can only be so broad;  I hope that others are as interested in this as you have been.

I don't know if others read this thread, specifically.  I know there are others that know of the request and echo it internally (and externally, like on twitter) too.

There were, but the burden of proof is on those that want change. I doubt Ubisoft care anymore than I do whether the protagonist of AC is male or female. But they care about the revenue the game makes and I can't blame them for that given the fairly poor sales of games with female protagonists.

I won't dispute that people draw this conclusion.  Do you think Remember Me did poorly because of the woman protagonist?

Me personally ? I rather like Niin found her engaging and interesting I liked the game too. I'm aware of the article where the gamemakers were told to change her to a male for sales reasons. I'd defer to a publisher since I'd have thought they would put a lot more effort and consequently be more aware of what does and does not sell.

As I said earlier in the thread. I bought the game, that's as far as my support can go. Putting myself in the publishers position where my actual money was on the line. I'd take the safe option unless I saw something compelling to change my mind.

The situation could be more complicated and a self-fulfilling prophecy.
