Okay. Well, these characters for starters.

Spoiler

All three are beautiful women, yet none of them I would want to get on their bad side of.

Yeah...none of those women are intimidating to me at all. The first two look like normal weak lab assistants and the last one just looks like a typical femme fatale. From the look and design of them I would have zero fear of them (even if they all ganged up on me) someone like Iron Bull I would run the other way from in a dark alley.

Fine, show me who you think is intimidating them.  <_<

I think Hinata Hyuga was relying on you being familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The perception of these characters as 'intimidating' relies entirely on knowing who they are and seeing their skills in action, you won't get any sense of it just from looking at them. Which is, of course, the intention, because Marvel would never make a female character 'ugly'.

And the truth is that in real life, these actresses are likely no stronger than the average woman.

Actually, I saw Captain America: Winter Soldier with some female friends the other day, and I was surprised to hear them complaining that Black Widow's top was low-cut. I thought she was dressed fairly appropriately, considering the circumstances (she was meant to be blending in with civilians). It didn't even show the top of her breasts or anything.

But it's not my place to tell women what should or should not make them uncomfortable, just like I expect them to shut up and listen to me when I say something is homophobic.

I didn't realize she meant 'looked intimidating' since she never said that. I expected someone wanting people to not be judged on their appearance would not in turn judge people on their appearance. Those characters were simply chosen because I just finished watching Marvel stuff.

I agree they don't look intimidating though if given a choice in a dark alley I'd be running from them all the same because all three are tough and deadly combatants especially true of 1 and 3 but that's because I know the characters. (Although if you got the full force of May's (picture 1) personality I think you'd probably start running anyway (and it would be there in person) as she's got the attitude to intimidate pretty much on sight.  ;)

But yeah as Mockingword said without knowing the characters they're not that scary.

Also Black Widow (pic 3) uses her looks to deliberately avoid looking intimidating and to decieve people about her true capabilities so not sure she'd count as intimidating at any time (though I love the very way she uses perceptions to manipulate situations into her favour and has the skills to take advantage when she does. :D )

In this case I think she's talking about someone who looks as intimidating as iron bull because the original request came out of how she wanted a female qunari to be percieved/feel to play... at least that's how I took Nefla's posts. I asked for examples because I was curious if there were any characters real or imagined who were female, physically intimidating and interesting that would interest me to learn more about.  :P

Male Qunari don't look as intimidating as Iron Bull, so that's hardly a fair benchmark.

Who says they can't be both? There's plenty of attractive ladies who are powerful, scary, intimidating, etc.

while men are many things

But they are always both, or just pretty. I am really annoyed Wynne cant look old, I mean actually old with realistic wrinkles, but Duncan can. That every Qunari woman concept art is the build of an athletic human woman. Smooth faces everywhere and strap bras that would never work "realistically".

It is a requirement in every media for a woman to be beautiful. Yes of course women can be powerful and pretty, but why cant they be portrayed likable and powerful and not pretty? Flemeth as soon as she became major player had a huge overhaul.
Tali was considered not human enough to be revealed. She was too alien. So they made them human looking. It is a major thing keeping women apart from men is this standard all women have to live up to, which fortifies the idea that women are one thing while men are many things. Even Aveline who is hardly down and out ugly, is worried about her looks because yeah, all women need to be pretty. For men, they can just be powerful, but women need to be powerful AND pretty.

I mean 1000 year old Asari just get bigger boobs. And the 1 Turian woman died and the Krogan women greatest dream was to have babies (not saying it didnt make sense with the plot but still). Of the women unavailable to romance in dragon age, Wynne, Sigrun, Velanna, And Aveline (which is fewer than non romanceable guys of 7 because without being romanceable few people see a reason in female characters) they are all fairly pretty or cute, all are fairly smooth faced, and fairly conventionally pretty. Sigrun less so but instead is about being super cute. Compare to Oghren, Justice, Sten in Origins, Wrex, Garrus, Grunt.

I want some characters to be downright not pretty at all, not just in Bioware but the media in general.

I get that, but like with the picture you linked I don't see that as much different than what Rasaan was in the more realistic drawing of her. The arms are a little thicker in your picture, but then your picture has the woman flexing so that happens. That and again I swear people with tans look buffer than people without tans. I don't know why though.

And I get you want what you want. And I want what I want, which is a character who is more on the lithe side. I just want it on the Qunari because that plus the other appearance factors makes a very striking character to me.

Honestly, the fact that we're going off of a comic book instead of actual in-game art means that we should maybe not read too closely into how she's drawn yet.  But to me, she looks very skinny, with just a little bump of muscle on the biceps.  The photo I posted has visibly thicker arms and an overall broader chest (not breasts).

Honestly though, if you want lithe, why not play as an elf?  Or a human, for that matter, since no human woman is going to be muscular in this game either.

I don't find that the least bit attractive on either gender. I would prefer more Brienne of Tarth to She-Hulk.

Edit: sorry didn't reload my browser before responding. That was to the image of the female body-builder.

Same. There's too much muscle. The way the Qunari fem in the comics looks is great and how I'd want my qunari fem to look like. I want her tall and muscular yes. But not that bodybuilder level =/

Because as I said, I like the combination of features Rasaan has. It is a very striking look, and I'd like my Qunari Inquisitor to share it. Why are my desires for a character concept less valid than anyone else's?

Same and Fem Qunari is hopefully going to be tall. (If she ends up the same size as human males I'm gonna be pissed) and yeah I want female Qunari to look attractive since I will be playing as one.

It's too bad we can't just have a body slider. Alas.

Body slider would fix a lot of complaints. But I see why Bioware doesn't use it. They have to make enough armor and animation variances as it is.

Exactly.  Women must be pretty FIRST and every other trait is tacked on after that.  If it doesn't fit in with what would be pretty, then it's either minimized or hidden or never shown at all.  DA:I seems to have really ramped things up with making every character more unique and extreme and gritty, yet every woman is still thin and willowy.

And to be clear, what we're talking about is conventionally attractive.  The ideal that is shown on every magazine.  Thin, large-breasted, always shorter than every male, stuff like that.

How does this not look old? Remember Wynne is what, in her late 50s?

Spoiler

Wynne also has the body of a 20-year-old, but I think that's more a problem with them never bothering to make more than one female body.

I never said it wasn't valid.  It just happens that what you want is pretty much the status quo for female characters, and I think it would be really nice to see something else for a change.

Well maybe as intimidating as the Arishock then? Though really the most intimidating qunari males are only companions or villains anyway the rest are fairly generic  :P

For me I'd like my female qunari to have that physical presence, to be intimidating on first sight even if in terms of personality I then make her a gentle giant who can totally hold her own in a fight but looks for peaceful options first (I like making characters that look one way and act totally different  ;) ). I look forward to playing almost the opposite with my elf or human (looks innocent and pretty but is actually really tough and maybe more aggressive).

I don't think it is less valid than anyone else's and I apologise if I've given you that impression. I thought we were just discussing our different perspectives on what we want from the female qunari inquisitor... and I do feel for the devs because we want very different things so yeah a body slider would be nice or even a choice of two different body types for each race but as you said that's a lot more work.  ;)

And what Lady Nuggins said (why can't I like posts directly above mine until after others have posted a few times? ) Oh well, "Like!"  :D

Lol, Wynne is definitely older than that. Rhys is damn near forty in Asunder.

My mother is in her early fifties, and she's way more wrinkly than that. Wynne's skincare regimen must be phenomenal.

She looks late  thirty at most it is the white hair that fools you. one person did a more old version of her. Also most of her companion dialogue with the men had them flirting with her.

But an intimidating strong woman?

I'll give you that, but as you said the reason for that was Bioware only had two body types for human characters, thin and fat. They didn't use fat for any companions.

Well, Asunder takes place 10 years later which leaves Wynne in her late 60s, meaning Rhys was born when she was in her 20s.

I've seen women in their 50s look like that without skin care products. They just have a healthy lifestyle and/or age well. Same could apply to Wynne.

That sounds like a fun playthrough. A recommendation I have is for your Qunari is give her really piercing, intimidating eyes. Eyes intimidate people just as much as body size does.

But why does it HAVE to apply to Wynne? I am not saying that women cant look good. No one is saying that. The question is why cant they not look bad? Why MUST they be as conventionally pretty as possible for who they are? There is nothing wrong with pretty whatsoever, but I am bitter over the fact it is a requirement.

Yeah I do agree with this. If we had more variety in the way females are portrayed it wouldn't be a big deal but because we always seem to have to have 'sexy' and/or 'pretty' defined as the same thin, shapely, big busted woman it leaves a lot of women and body types unrepresented... it would be nice to see more variety. :D

Yeah I'm hoping to find something that works for that too... now I want to see the CC so I can go hunting for piercing eyes...

Heyyy remember that "Females in Dragon age - do we need more variety?" from the old forum? Things got outta hand VERY FAST.

It always boggles my mind that talking about things that women want really angers a heck of a lot of people. Sad times. Though I must say this thread is going splendidly. :)
