That sounds like a fun playthrough. A recommendation I have is for your Qunari is give her really piercing, intimidating eyes. Eyes intimidate people just as much as body size does.

Thanks. It just seemed the moment I posted "I like the Female Qunari look", I was told how it was wrong.

No you are absolutely not Wrong. If Human Quizzy had her build and she had the larger frame we suggest would that be a good compromise? She has the body of a muscular woman on the same scale as Male Quizzy.

With 4 different women, I was hoping for fat and short(dwarf), thin and curvy (elf), muscular average woman (human) and hulking lady of bigness (Qunari)

That seems fair?

VERY FAIR. Considering that's exactly what males always get...

God why, cruel world, WHY.

This always always reminds me of one of the Mass Effect devs laughing about how on earth they will manage to create a female Krogan. "Do we just add lipstick to her HURR DURR. HOW TO MAKE LADY?!1!"

Funny how creativity just goes out the window when it comes to designing female characters.

I believe it was the developers of Disney's Frozen who landed in some hot water for complaining about how hard it was to make unique looking women in animation (they had to make TWO princesses guys!!!...who both look a lot like Rapunzel <_< ).

The beauty norms are so ingrained that its not just confining what people want to do it is confining their imagination too. The design team literally couldn't think of how to differentiate two female leads.

And Mass Effect 4 better let me play as a female Turian or give me one as a companion. Or both. ...Mainly I want the companion.

Well, it's more I like how the body as shown with Rasaan went with the pale skin, white hair, horns, and eyes that made it striking, but then if they were able to pull something off ingame that was as striking but closer to what you want then yeah. Until we get a CC, I can't really say for certain.

As for elves, I actually don't see them as being curvy. I see them being more the lithe and almost board-like, think Merrill but human proportions. Humans would be the most likely to fill the curvy slot.

I too hope for race selection in ME4. Even if it is just the Council races, though I'd like Quarians available too.

Asari: Female

Salarian: Male

Turian: Male and Female

Human: Male and Female

Quarian: Male and Female

That's the number of gender options Inquisition gives.

If the devs are to be believed, asari aren't actually 'female' (Sure Bioware).  So other than Asari, no species should be 'gender' restricted. Female Salarians usually stay on Salarian homeworlds, but not always, so there doesn't seem to be a lore reason for them to be excluded.

I know that isn't Dragon Age, but it will be interesting to watch the ME4 development for a lot of these same reasons; beauty standards and representation etc. Possibly more so, given that most of the species vary even further from standard human male/female forms then the species of Dragon Age do.

Hopefully the way Turian women were handled is indicative of how female Qunari will be. I didn't feel like they shied away from making them look as alien as their male counterparts.

While some female Salarians travel, we'd be stuck with Male ones to counterbalance the Asari. Plus I think the few female Salarians who do leave are not doing so in fighting roles.

What races haven't we seen females of that would be different from males? The only ones I can think of are Batarians, Drell, and maybe Vorcha. Hanar and Elcor will follow the same path as Krogan and Salarians where there will be no real noticeable difference, and Volus we have no idea how any of them look so can't say. Same for any new races they'll introduce.

Yeah, the Female Turians are definitely pretty but in an exotic "not trying to be pretty" way.

Lol, Wynne is definitely older than that. Rhys is damn near forty in Asunder.

My mother is in her early fifties, and she's way more wrinkly than that. Wynne's skincare regimen must be phenomenal.

my older sister is in her mid fifties, she has looked after her skin really well and actually doesn't have many wrinkles at all, just good genes (I got the crappy ones LOL). Another friend is in her late forties and her skin is phenomenal (eats well, exercises way more than me and stays out of the sun). But I've certainly seen women younger than me that look haggard. It's a combination of things that influence wrinkles, sun exposure (a big thing here), genes, diet and lifestyle.

I always felt that the female krogan design we got was pretty cheap, since we finally get to see one, and she's shrouded behind this hood and cloak. Like...were the salarians forbidden from removing these things so they could examine her? I assume that it's the same basic dinosaur-bat face, but still.

But anyway, I don't suppose there's much hope for the "joke" races of Mass Effect. Obviously the vorcha are exempt since they're genderless, but the elcor, hanar and volus are doomed to a womanless society.

The beauty norms are so ingrained that its not just confining what people want to do it is confining their imagination too. The design team literally couldn't think of how to differentiate two female leads.

Apart from hair and make up Elsa and Anna looked exactly alike (and, as you said, they looked exactly like Rapunzel). It's weird, because Kristof and Hans could both be considered attractive and their faces were pretty different from each other, and the older Disney princesses are no clones. Pocahontas, Aurora, Ariel and Snow White all look unique.

DAI actually doesn't appear to be showing much variability in the female faces either. For some reason the designer are now obsessed with a prominent, masculine jaw and they have put it on both Cassandra and Morrigan already, while they previously had more feminine features. It's like after Aveline they feel the need to give their iconic "strong female characters" a masculine look. That's not necessarily bad, but I feel it's becoming overly prevalent. They're doing it with the hair as well. Three female companions, and one is bald, one has very short hair, and the last one has short hair. Is it no longer possible to look feminine and still be strong and even a skilled fighter?

I get that short hair can suit a practical personality, but it's not like a less feminine appearance is absolutely necessary for every strong fighter character. I know it will be defended with "but it suits the character!" but to me that argument is not very good. Your jawline does not determine what kind of personality you have. It was also used to defend Isabela's ridiculous appearance. So huge breasts are normal on a character who engages in casual sex? She enjoys sex because she has such large breasts? Or she grew them when she lost her virginity and thought "ohh, this feels good"? Isabela could (and, imo, should) have looked like this and it would have "suited" her character just as well, perhaps even better: http://nenethomas.co...t-prints/thorn/ (sorry, it won't let me link the image directly)

Ehh, I'm not sure I'm actually making a point here. =]  Just some random thoughts that have been in my head for some time and I wanted to get them out somewhere. Sorry.

Well, its only counterbalancing the asari if Bioware calls them women. Which, 'lore wise' they aren't supposed to be. But anyways...

I meant that most of the alien species, turians, salarians, krogans, vary more from human then elves or dwarves vary from human. Not that each species in ME varied greatly between genders. Sorry for the confusion. :)

I thought Nyreen(?) looked terrifying. She looked more exposed and skeletal then Garrus, and most of the time she was in frame I kept thinking about how fragile her mandibles looked. (like, if they were bones and they snagged something wrong they could just snap off-thinking that throughout the DLC freaked me out). But I really liked it b/c it didn't seem like the devs main focus had been to make her look attractive to the audience. And that exposed/skeletal look made her seem even tougher/scrappier for some reason.

True, but the Qunari shown is kinda muscular and quite curvy. Other than the horns you can probably get pale skin, dark eyes, and white hair(it was possible in the recent past with most games)

I want you to get the character you want, but I really want a less than typical female character, and it is really hard to not make a cute female dwarf. I bald her and give her a big nose, and ruddy cheeks, and big tattoos and when I show it to someone they always talk about how cute she is XD

Elves wont do it, humans wont, I really think Qunari is the answer. Also in all the concept art, the women seem really disporportionately sized compared to men which seems weird from the same species. Sure they are shorter, but you think the differance between human/dwarf/elf men and women and Qunari women are human sized but Qunari men are hulks

Ah, okay. Still, I wonder how the females of those aliens look.

Well, I may admit that part of it was Nyreen's voice(I think of Arcee from Transformers: Prime ^_^) but I liked how it was still alien yet had soft touches to it.

To be fair, a strong jaw hardly makes them masculine, Morrigan is still very pretty and very feminine, vivienne still has a fairly narrow face as does Sera, long hair is an issue because of hair rendition in games and because some people found it weird.

I feel they are dipping their toes into the untraditional face features for women. No one is saying you cant be a fighter and a woman, I mean Ashley let her hair down in 3 to be more pretty, Miranda is as feminine as feminine gets, Merrill and Isabela are no where near masculine.

But not even feminine characters should always fit every feminine mold. Variety is important. Yes a wide jaw and pretty, short hair but narrow face. They ALL have make up even. Cassandra is the only one out and out masculine. I do understand that hyper femininity is rarely taken seriously, but masculine and unstereotypical women characters rarely exist, and even Cassandra is not really Butch. Its a give and take.

Yeah, Hans and Kristoff did manage to look different, probably b/c there aren't as strict guidelines on how a male hero has to look. Certainly there are standards in place for men as well, but there is a lot more leeway there.

Morrigan looks more like she has an overly skinny neck then an overly prominent jaw? At least, from the few screenshots I've seen. I like the reasoning behind Cass's change, which Matt Rhodes (I think) posted in his blog. Her 'hook' is power, and that meant a lot of sharp angles for her face/features.  It had the unfortunate consequence of making her look just like an evil gym teacher I had once...but thats my own issue haha. .

As far as the hair argument goes...Dragon Age has been 'cheating' around that for a long time. Morrigans hair was tied back, Leliana's was as long as Sera's is. Wynne had short hair pulled back. Merrill and Aveline both had theirs pulled back. Isabela is the only one I can think of who really had long flowing hair, but I think they used the bandanna to manage it/turn it into one flowing mass as opposed to hair which would actually fly everywhere. But I would say many of those characters managed to look feminine and were also very capable warriors.

But, Viv isn't bald and she certainly looks feminine. I know part of the choice on her hair probably came from the whole 'hair is awful to animate' mechanic, but I appreciate Bioware saying, even inadvertently, by Viv's very presence, that you don't need to have long flowing hair to be feminine. So many women get crap IRL for shortening their hair (anyone remember the outrage over Emma Watson cutting her hair a few years ago  ), so its good to see that our super high maintenance, style obsessed lady mage friend is both a beacon of the traditionally feminine and also says 'FU' to some of it at the same time.

I feel that is more the animators that did that, since twileks were the size of humans in live action works. And the hight there isnt so weird as the girth. I always feel some of the worst things for little girls are female cartoon characters. Very few of them have anywhere approaching realistic proportions. Or are extremely idealized. Have you seen the comparison of Correctly proportioned Barbie next to actual barbie?

Well, Clone Wars is canon so I guess the males have a range in size. Though we knew that from the movies by that fat Twi'lek senator Orn Free Taa.

I always feel while it is canon on story, looks range a great deal from medium to medium, and as long as they arent total lore breaking, they will be accepted. In most animated things, they make women smaller than usual, because they can when they dont have to use people

Body slider would fix a lot of complaints. But I see why Bioware doesn't use it. They have to make enough armor and animation variances as it is.

I stand corrected Twi'lek average height ranges from 5"3 to 7"10

Of course the women would be smaller (sigh) so yep on average men are about 2 feet taller than women (taking in variability)
