Ah I see what you mean. I knew something was off wasn't sure exactly what XD Either way it looks silly. Then there's that I'm hulk expression he's wearing. Ugh.

Edit: Yeah her breasts are big for her frame. Merrill thankfully doesn't have that issue. (For what I've noticed anyway).

Yeah, Merrill and the other DA2 elven women were pretty small in terms of breast size, which is good considering the are supposed to be lithe. From the looks of Sera, that won't change.

Messing with body composition is a serious business. If you alter the proportions of the molecules in the body even slightly, the results can be disastrous. :P

Yep.

I really hope Fem Qunari ends up amazonian. If she's smaller (or the same size) than human males I'm gonna cry ;_;

Exactly what the title says.

I know that marketing's going to hound the developers to not show the women, because they assume males are their primary market.  But these forums alone contain oodles of women, and since forum posters are a minority I'd expect there are a whole lot more out there who don't post--and a few who are on the forums but don't admit to being female.  Not to mention I'm sure there are guys who'd prefer to play the female Inquisitor.  I don't think using her in marketing is going to hurt your sales.

I can't speak for the rest of us women, but I'd like to see a few renders of female inquisitors.  So far I've only seen some concept art, which is great and better than it was with Mass Effect where we got nothing until ME3, but we've heard the male inquisitor voice, we've seen renders of male inquisitors...

I'm starting to feel like my Inquisitor is invisible as anything more than concept art--because even though I play males every now and then, my character will be a woman at least nine times out of ten.

So how about it, Bioware?  Could we have a screenshot of the female Inquisitor in action?  Could the next trailer show a lady Inquisitor?  Pretty please?

Unfortunately ... it is more sad truth, The market is geared for the male audience, a good example is the game Remember Me where the protagonist is a woman and dark skin tone.

Remember Me was rejected by many publishers after Capcom accept and distribute the project.

That when a woman is only seen as sexual objects, Like MMORPG, Dead or Alive fighting games, or those stupid asian games.

I didnt turn away from Remeber Me cause of the female lead. Its because its more of an action adventure type genre. I dont play many or hardly any of those types. It does look intriguing as story is concerned.

That, and at the time it came out I was with an overly jealous lady. Id be cheating just inadvertently looking in a direction that a woman happened to be in. Glad that's been over.....yeah, I'm cheating with a virtual avatar. Yep...shrugs...

I would rather have them be muscular, small chested (since breasts are mostly fat and very athletic women lose their breast size or get implants which looks really weird and  with a body that has zero fat anywhere else) almost as tall as Qunari males, with a thick neck and bigger horns which is a compromise between pretty pretty princess and extreme body builder I think. Still muscular and more unique looking like the males but not as extreme:

LadyQunariYes_zps781c8a05.jpg

Oh my, yes!  She's fantastic! And I do really hope that we get those double arishok horns.

Wait let me put this on another post

da2_races.jpg

I mean every race looks decent here except the male Qunari. Why do they look so ridiculous compared to the female ones?

What I'm noticing, actually, is that they're sort of exaggerating the racial traits in the males.  Look at the male dwarf.  He is such a stereotypical thick-bodied, big-bellied, beardy dwarf.  And the male qunari is super Hulky. His head and neck is so bull-like that he's actually dipping his head forward like he might charge.

I imagine the men are a little more toned down in-game.  I hope it goes the other way for the women, and that they depart a little bit from this one mold to take on the racial traits more.

Judging by Iron Bull's photos, I'd say that at least the Qunari males are even more toned up. Or it could just be Iron Bull is an exceptionally large specimen.

On an unrelated note, I wonder if we'll see an Elf or a Qunari broodmother...

This is true, the general assumption by companies is that female protagonists do not sell video games.  However, I think this assumption is generally unfounded.  And for Bioware, it is not a question of whether they can make a game that features a female protagonist--they already do that.  It's whether they continue to hide the female option away or are willing to show her once in a while.

I get the feeling that Iron Bull is not standard size or shape even for a qunari.  I'm hoping he's not representative of the average qunari population.

*shudders* Broodmothers are bad enough without thinking too deeply about what they used to be.

I can understand us all being shallow or superficial at some point. My problem is it's nearly always directed toward women's looks and not men's! :P

I feel like almost every female character Bioware creates, they sit there and think "hmmm how sexuality attractive is she, scale of 1 to 10?" whereas they're a lot more free to do whatever they like with male characters because they're not limited to creating something people would want to bang. :P

I know.  I always make my characters as ugly or plain as possible (this is because if I try to make them beautiful, they will instead end up freakish.  That is my gift: complete CC ineptitude), but you can't really do that with the females.  When I imported my Shephard into ME2, she lost her scar and I could no longer keep her face clear of make-up.  My Shephard doesn't have time for make-up!  She's plain looking! She's a hard-***! Why do you force me to give her some form of lip gloss?  DA2 wouldn't really let you make a female Hawke look hard-core.  It only let you make her look old.

The point I was trying to make in an earlier post (perhaps I failed) was that there are very relatively few AAA games with female protagonists. Many other games that feature female protagonists that do would likely not have the marketing budget that big popular games that feature male protagonists do (think Madden for example as being one such high profile series). So if a game featuring female protagonist (or both genders) doesn't sell well is it down to having a female featured or that it had only 30% marketing budget compared to well selling games with male Protagonists? Genre has a lot to do with it I suspect and as well as trying to make comparisons of sales with games with high marketing budgets featuring solely male protagonists. A true comparison of sales can really only be made if your comparing something relatively the same (like with like, my apples and oranges analogy from earlier).

To me, companies can't blame the protagonist featured when they decide to spend less on marketing because the game features females who aren't just there as eye candy, where their budget would be pumped up as big as a male qunari's shoulders if the game only had male protagonists. I'm not saying Bioware would do this but until the rot of 'female protagonists aren't worth the dollar' stops, we're stuck with marketing that features mostly males.

Ryzaki linked to an article in the romance thread about having lead characters who were LGBT and the prevailing attitude seems to be familiar to me, one I've certainly seen, maybe 10+ years ago in relation to female protagonists. Thank the maker we've progressed somewhat, I still have faith that the larger majority of gamers (straight white guys 18-35) aren't complete troglodytes unwilling to accept protagonists of a different gender to them.

I think that backfired on you dear because that dwarf you have in your icon is quite lovely imo.

Actually I'm the total opposite. I'm a girly girl irl and that always translates to my characters. I think was one of the few people who had Shepard in dark lipstick. She was still a hardcore Renegade, just a doe eyed mascara wearing one.

Couldn't agree more and I think since the artist's tag line even suggests it's an opportunity to 'explore different standards of beauty' it would have been nice if the artwork had shown different types of female figures, but aside from their heights and widths they still all have the same basic shape... sigh.

That's a brilliant pair of drawings Nefla and I really love the second one and the qunari in that one is the kind of character I'd love to play... if I could have something like that she'd be my first play through hands down.  :D

Nefla should do the models of the characters for them. :)

Draw up and make them in game. Id play Nefla's rendition of qunari instead. :)

Re troglodytes: our noble, cave-dwelling ancestors cannot be compared with the lazily unimaginative, the bigoted, or the blindly privileged.  To do so is an insult to troglodytes past and present.  I have plenty to say about reactionaries, none of which can be said here.  My opinions on the running dogs of white male privilege (not to exclude heterosexual privilege) are too strong for this forum.  I will not be drawn into commenting on their intellectual and emotional provincialism!

Back to the topic at hand.

Awww in my head my fem Qunari is huge, with enormous boobs and a russian accent...

I'm glad the elves are taller, I think that's why I've always had a problem with them before, being so short and skinny they felt like children to me, it's weird I know....but that's the only reason I can think that they felt off to me... I might even be able to play one now!  We'll see..

I'm hoping for a huge fem qunari too after all she's supposed to be from a race of giants... but not enormous boobs... seriously I don't get the obsession people have with big boobs... they lead to back aches, look weird if out of proportion and just get in the way... they also require seriously uncomfortable bras which I've yet to see any female character have to deal with or they'd be dragging and sagging all over the place... so not attractive.  Sorry, not actually directed at you I've just seen bust size come up a few times and finally got sick of it. Rant over...

If you find playing elves difficult because of their height do you play dwarves or is that even worse for you? Curious because I think one of the reasons I've never finished a dwarven play through is because I get sick of looking up at every other character (except during Orzammer... totally spelt that wrong) that I abandon the play through by about Lothering. Sad I know  :(

Yeah, Merrill and the other DA2 elven women were pretty small in terms of breast size, which is good considering the are supposed to be lithe. From the looks of Sera, that won't change.

Yeah and they were in proportion for the most part... at least in that area and I think that works much better than giving every woman regardless of race and build big boobs.

Oops... okay rant really over now.  ;)

Standards of beauty:

Horns/no horns

Brunette/white hair

Fair skin/fairer skin/grey skin

Pointy ears/no pointy ears

Weird maori wannabe chin tattoo/no weird maori wannabe chin tattoo

Blue eyeshadow/no blue eyeshadow

Exact same arm-body-leg ratio/exact same arm-body-leg ratio except slightly less curve in hips

Tall/medium/dwarfism

Yup, very inclusive.

I'm so with you there. :P I've got this personal theory that the only people obsessed with on-screen enormous boobs (whether it's in movies or video games or anime) are people who have never seen large boobs in real life!!!

NOT that there is anything wrong with any real life person's large boobs. It's just this obsession with boobs OF ANY KIND is just bizarre.
