Is it just me, or do both that trailer and the Sacred Ashes trailer have more of a 1980s/early 1990s feel than something more recent? Or, has gaming and advertising for games changed that much since 2009/2010? Because... that wasn't really long ago at all... and yet, those trailers feel so very, very campy, or 80s cartoon. Both of them. They don't feel like something that came from 2009 or 2010.
I must say I like the direction the trailers are going in now. They feel more cinematic, I can take them more seriously. Perhaps EA is wisening up to the fact that most gamers aren't preteens anymore, that we come across a broad spectrum. Now if they would only also acknowledge that women play these games, and be willing to advertise the games for what they are, and not bloody hack-and-slash games. I mean there's plenty of fighting in DA:O and DA2, don't get me wrong, and yes, there's that blood splatter that I usually turn off because it's ridiculous to have my character blood-spattered mid-conversation... And, I will be fair to DA:O because it was in development for around 6-7 years before it ever came out. Perhaps that marketing campaign had already been planned at that point. Still... it doesn't feel as recent as it was and even then both trailers would have felt outdated. But, again, maybe that's just because I'm more used to the recent game trailers etc. that seem more cinematic, movie-like, and are more serious?
I think there's been a shift in how gaming is viewed, over the past decade and a half or so. Many of the trailers are more serious, and less campy. So there's hope for seeing more women in them, and hope that perhaps they will stop being afraid to market the plot and characters... Who knows?
