Really? Being prejudged makes you feel bad?
Imagine that.
I'm not prejudiced. I hate people who insult others on things they can't control.

Calling someone things like racist, sexist, etc just because they fit the "straight white male" generalization on the other hand even when they aren't can be.
Well sure, but have you ever considered that maybe you can be racist or sexist without meaning to be? That sometimes our lack of awareness of what other people deal with actually causes us to say or do hurtful things that we never realized was hurtful? Sure, sometimes people can be overly aggressive when talking about these issues, but it's really just a small taste of the pent-up frustration they're probably feeling at actually being the subject of racism and sexism.

Anyone can be racist, sexist, homophobic etc. You definitely don't have to be a straight white male to engage in those behaviors.
Doesn't give them the right to insult or belittle those who are more "privileged" than them.
And it isn't about insulting or belittling anyone. Saying 'you have this advantage because of ____' isn't belittling, its pointing out a way in which things are currently inequal. Some people do wield that knowledge like an accusation, but more often then not, the simple statement of someones privilege sends someone with a certain privilege into a defensive mode where they feel attacked. It isn't an easy thing to acknowledge or an easy thing to have a conversation about.
However, I'm much more concerned about people who are subordinated for their identities, who are not only insulted and belittled for it but actively denied things because of the societal structures that work against them. The fact that the worst someone with privilege has to deal with is being insulted is in of itself an example of privilege. I could try and insult someone from being straight (I wouldn't) but that is all I could do. Someone could insult me for being gay...and then fire me, tell me I can't get married, deny me healthcare etc etc.

Again, the movement itself is great and I fully support it. It's when certain members cause issues when they lash out at people who haven't done anything just because they happen to be the same race or gender as those who do which upsets me.
Anywho, this went offtrack a bit so let's reset the course.
Of course privilege for white people exists, and so too male privilege. Women have some privileges too, whether feminists want to admit it or not.
And to say 'Check your privilege" doesn't mean anything offensive in and of itself. But its overuse has become so associated with overly sensitive social justice people and ones who think "you can't be racist to white people" "there's no such thing as sexism against men" "real women have curves". And they back it up with insane analogies like how a boss can flip off an employee but if an employee flips off an employer they'd be fired. There are parody posts on tumblr about checking privileges on ridiculous things.
So that might be where's he's coming from.

I'm a she, actually. ![]()
Maybe the Female Inquisitor will be forced to check her glowly hand privalege from the next village she will have to visit. ![]()

Seriously though this is usually how it starts and I rather this thread stay open until we see an in-game feminquisitor

Why? I mean, we stopped before anyone got real nasty at each other so there's no real reason for it to be locked.

We disagreed. I don't think it was nasty at all?
And its certainly a relevant discussion in a thread about women in gaming.

I don't even think it was a disagreement. Neither side said the other was wrong.

It's also not like there haven't been equally intense discussions earlier in the thread about how different people see different women or even potential characters in game and we've managed to remain civil then too. ![]()
And on track I hope we get a female inquisitor trailer sooner rather than later or another reasonably ambiguous one but this time with female inquisitor voice so that all those looking for a chance to assess VA will have something to go on. I'm playing female regardless but I'd still like to hear one of my options ahead of time and see something of how a female inquisitor will move and look in game too ![]()

Considering closing the thread....
go for it.. Maybe that would be for the best.. I think it's getting little bit out of hand now. Maybe a new female inquisitor topic could come up down the line ..after they release some stuff on it
I had similar experiences like that but the worst experience ive had was with a cashier that didn't like female gamers when i went to HMV to buy Demons Souls & Dark Souls. The guy serving rolled his eyes & pretty much asked why a girl would buy those games as well as asking lots of questions about what i knew about RPG's, he then proceeded to give me 2 empty boxs without the disks inside, i didn't realise till i got home what he'd done & had to travel all the way back to actually get what id paid for
This is why I don't buy crap from gamestores unless it's shrink wrapped or I spend five minutes checking the disc. It avoids stuff like this (and when you get home and the disc looks like it has freaking VOMIT on it. WTF gamestop?)
It would be nice, Allan, if you could at least PM Brass_Buckles before making that final decision.
It would be the polite thing to do considering that the discussion has been mostly very civil even if people have clashed. ![]()

My local store is EB games and they always find the instructions, check the disc and then carefully put it in the package right in front of me or they grab the shrink wrapped version from out the back and hand it to me so I guess that helps me avoid that problem too... they've also had female staff and female bosses from what I've seen so maybe to them women in their game store is no big deal. I do feel lucky I've had such good experiences now though and sorry for those of you that haven't.
I hope you don't have to close it Allan, up to now it's been one of the best threads I've participated in and usually fairly civil... it even managed to get me posting instead of lurking all the time
Hopefully we can get back on track talking about female inquisitor and how much we're hoping to see and hear more about her soon.
I hope, before a trailer came out, that the site will be corrected and will be more informative. Until now, the part about "became the Inquisitor" or how is nominated, doesn't even mention personalization of the character at all. maybe the class you can choose, but is way too little for a page that should inform about the game. It can be ok for Gothic or the Witcher, who had a fixed character, but not for a game like DAI. ![]()
really, if I didn't already know the DA serie, I would just suppose it was the usual Risen/Gothic/Witcher/clone. Why is so hard put a few words on a internet page? ![]()
I'm just curious.

Yeah that's true too. Usually if I see a game I'm curious about I go to their main sight to find out if I can play female and it's amazing how hard it can be to find out that answer sometimes. I really don't understand if you offer the option as a game developer you don't make that easier to find out on your official website if you don't include it in trailers and other advertising. ![]()
At the moment on the dragon age website you do have to look pretty hard to even find he/she references that suggest you can play either gender and while bioware fans probably know by now that both are options other people checking out the game for the first time won't so I too hope we see updates to the main site that do show fem inquisitor as well... plus it would also give us more to talk about while waiting for a fem inquisitor trailer (if it happened first)

Yeah I doubt it was malice in my case. Dude was just not paying attention and didn't check the disc. Last time I didn't check though. =/
XD yes especially fem Quizzy ![]()

It's so hard know about the customization of the character, expecially the sex in the games that have this feature that is almost ridicolous. And I really don't understand why. Is a feature as important as knowing if a game is fantasy or shi-fi! even Destiny have made clearer there is chance to customize the PC than DAI. ![]()
I remember cleary NWN and others games of the time where it was hinted everywhere the PC could be of others races than human, for example. why most SH are now reluctant to advertize these kind of features? I don't think even the most mainstream, ignorant, lower. no-buy-if-there-isn't-BoOom gamer can be put off by playng a game where one can customize his/her own character!!!

Yes, precisely. This is what bothers me about the lack of female Inquisitor advertising. Bioware has created a game where YOU CAN CHOOSE the gender AND race of your character. Why the heck would they just show the same white guy in every trailer? Like... don't they WANT to advertise this amazing feature they've included in this game? Even if we forget the whole social movement aspect, it's still poor advertising.
Being ignorant of the ways in which you benefit from racist, sexist and homophobic social structures is doing something wrong.
I think I can understand where she was originally coming from, though. For instance just today I was made aware of a website called something like "Stupid Things White Girls Say." I thought that was pretty pathetic, because if someone made a website replacing the world "white" with "black", all hell would have broken loose.
Browsing Tumblr, I find myself really struggling with the racism coming from POC toward white people. Like... just because you're black and you've had some disadvantages, doesn't mean you have the right to be an a$$ toward a 14 year old lonely white girl on the internet. If that makes sense. ![]()
In the end I just wish that we could all be fekking nice to one another??
