I've noticed that the PEGI rating is different from the BBFC rating.

I cannot find the report on the PEGI rating (From the little symbols I can see it seems to contain violence and language), but I think trailers have said it's 18. However the BBFC rating is a 15, with "strong language and moderate violence" as the reason for the rating. Now, seeing as they seem to have differing opinions of what age this game is suitable for, what age will be enforced in shops? Now, I vaguely recall that the BBFC rating can legally stop people from buying what ever it is that they're deemed too young for. I don't know if the same applies to PEGI or not though.

I am 16, will I be able to buy Mass Effect 2 from a shop or not? (Heh, didn't have this problem with dragon age thanks to my parents giving it to me).

Sorry if this has been asked before, I seem to remember a thread about this a while ago, but I think it was on the old forum.

As a complete aside: Why does the ESRB rate it as an 18 because of "Blood, Drug Reference, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Violence" when other (What's the word... rating people?) only seem to think there is much strong language and violence?

According to both Play.com and Amazon its Rating is 15+ (BBFC)

Unless informed otherwise I would trust that. Its a little late in the process to instantly change the rating.

Alright, thanks for the prompt reply!

I read something a while ago saying that the BBFC were changing things so the PEGI ratings took precedence for games after some time in 2009. Might just be mixing things up though.

ESRB is American and the Americans seem to have a problem with sexual content in games.  Look at Fox News' attack on the first Mass Effect, not once do they mention that you spend hours killing things, or your ability to assault unarmed civillians, but they took serious issue with the serious issue with the sex scene in the game.  Now admittedly Fox is kind of a joke but the attidute persists, to a lesser degree, with much of the country.

Yeah I recall reading something like that in the paper several months ago. I dont think its taken effect yet as sellers like Amazon and Play are regulated. The BBFC I am sure still applies.

Grr... hate this country sometimes. ME2 should've been developed along the same lines of an R Rated movie. Violence, language, blood, and yes some sex and nudity. That was what the first game contained. If people have a problem with it, don't buy it. But don't cut back at the expense of your fanbase - that ruins it.

I'm affraid BBFC only rated the trailer. (Check their records yourself if you like).

BBFC no longer have authority over new releases on video games in the UK. PGEI is now the sole video game rater in the UK and has recently been made enforcable.

Although the BBFC is a 15+, it only assesed the trailers bioware released (check BBFC's website). The pre-release boxart displaying the BBFC 15+ icon is for display purposes only.

The game will be released all over the Uk as an enforcable PEGI 18. Due to Strong Violence, language, and scenes of a sexual nature.

PEGI gave the first mass effect an 18+, at that time BBFC could overrule them as they had authority in the ratings industry. They called their 18+ rating ridiculous, as "It played out more like a star treck episode". And gave it a BBFC 12+.

Another example of PGEI's obselete rating system (It's based on developers ticking boxes), BBFC tested every single game and had a set of industry experts.

Anyway, sorry if this wasn't the news you were hoping for.. but the truth had to be said.

I know it sucks, this means I can't spend my game gift vouture on it. Instad I have to save up the £30 seperatly to buy it off steam.

Hmm...

I may just order it through Amazon then, no silly Europeans messing with perfectly good systems then.

Though checking the BBFC website it lists some of the trailers and then at the bottom has a thing with tomorrow's date and just "Mass Effect 2" as the title along with 15 as the category.

Ah well, what else are parents for?

Edit: Amazon says:  BBFC Rating: "Suitable for 15 years and over. Not for sale to persons under age 15. By placing an order for this product, you declare that you are 15 years of age or over." So that's fine.

BBFC have also rated the full game. www.bbfc.co.uk/website/classified.nsf/0/B3B3C8D9E2828FD48025768500592D66

The page with the trailers seems to be the bonus disk included with the CE. Although BBFC are no longer meant to be rating games here, games recently released like Darksiders and Bayonetta have had the BBFC logo on their game box. So if BBFC have rated ME2, it will have the BBFC logo on the box and be a 15.

Nope, I have emailed Bioware about the matter. Every retail copy in the uk will be sold as a Pegi 18.

(Box art says 15, game is sold as Pegi 18)

Also the bottom of the mass effect website and alot of trailers display the PEGI 18 logo.

BBFC is optional for developers, but they have to include the PEGI logo. Which is the one shops will use.

Well ya fox is really a pretty big joke here... but our counties aversion from sex is kinda sad...

I made a thread about this on the old forums a few weeks ago, and didn't really get a definite response. Since then, I've contacted GAME directly, asking the manager of my local store, and he said he wasn't sure. The box art showed BBFC 15, but when I pre-ordered they said it would be an 18, so I presumed they'd be using the PEGI rating.

I also e-mailed GAME customer services, to which I got the following response:

Hi George,

Thank you for your email.

As far as we are currently aware this game will be rated 15 by the BBFC and this rating will override the PEGI rating, however as the game has yet to be released this information is subject to change.

If you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us.

Regards,

Chris P

The Team at GAME

So who knows, that e-mail sounds quite promising. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
