There's a dragon living in the Underdark in Baldurs Gate 2. Dragons could be there temporarily visiting from the surface for their own purposes, or just choose to live there. The advantage of the toolset is you get to make whatever you want.
It would seem to limit their flying advantage, but that's not really a problem in NWN...

Some dragons do shapeshift into human forms. That could be one explanation for a dragon finding it's way to the underdark.

I think it's okay as long as you provide a way in for the dragon. I'd imagine they would hang around in large caverns and chasms where their wings still provide an advantage.

yeh. When i reworked dragons for the OC, they need a lot of room to swing their tails around, flap wings for buffets, and just to move around onto an opponent. iiRc, 2x2 tiles minimum ( though i think they can squeeze through 1x1 to get into a cavern ). I think they could feel kinda happy in a 5x5 cavern ...

Deep Dragons: http://www.dotd.com/mm/MM00071.htm
A scaled-down red dragon tinted a slight purple colour would probably do the trick. My 'Updated Dragon Special Ability scripts' include a gas breath attack.
Some dragon types tend to inhabit only certain environments (blacks like swamps, blues and browns like deserts, greens like forests, etc), which would make them less likely to end up in the Underdark.
Reds seems to go where ever the hell they want though. Gem dragons (emerald, sapphire, topaz, etc) are tied to the elemental plane of earth, so you might expect to find them deep underground. Metallics (bronze, silver, gold, etc) are usually good-aligned, so I'm guessing they wouldn't find the Underdark very appealing.

i stuffed a blue dragon into a 4x4 tile area - his name is Heatley. he guards the PC's father's treasure trove, and is also a good friend to the PC - I made him a sort of easter egg part of the story on a secret level of the family estate.

How do I install the Shadow Dragon creature into a Campaign? HAK in HAK folder and there is an .ERF file also. What do I do next?

in module propeties you have to associate the hak with your module - the exact process is relatively intuitive, with buttons that have explanatory names.
the erf has to be imported into the module under "file" .....
if you put it in the override you will have to explain that to the prospective players so they know to put it in there as well - subfolders work fine in the override btw.

There is a copy of appearance.2DA in the HAK that might need to be merged with your own copy.

There's also a red dragon underground in BG2; the designers made pains to show you how he comes and goes, in fact.

We need some massive Dragon dump placeables... Maybe a boulder retexturing?

Perhaps modify the dirt pile so that it has a tapering point on the top? We've already got the 'bug swarm' placeable effect and looping fly sounds. ![]()
