If he was protecting refugees before poisoning the Arl, then sure, but I have no way to know that he'd do that. For all I know, he could be a nefarious ne'er-do-well that played the hapless foil for the Regent's treachery.

I'm a mage, I know him. He really is that much of a dupe.

I didn't know about that quest until my latest playthrough about a month ago.  I thought that was a great end to his story myself.  I liked it better than death, Tranquility or just vanishing into thin air.  It's a shame it's bugged though.  Plus, it does give a chance for players to kill him if they regretted letting him go at Redcliffe. I never did, but the opportunity should be there.

Too bad he was a dummied out companion.  There is a reason why he's the only guest companion from a prologue that has color around his character portrait.

How do you get that quest?

That's fair, and I suppose if my Warden was a mage then that would change things, but my Cousland Warden didn't have the luxury of having a full view of his story.

There you go again with made up numbers.

Exactly.

How do you get that quest?

When you meet Jowan in the Redcliffe prison, you release him and tell him to leave. But as stated, it's a bugged quest.

Even if you're not, he's actually asking you to come up with him; why would he be endangering himself more if he was a spy?

It's not a matter of whether or not I have reason to suspect that he's a spy (which didn't really cross my mind), but rather that when all's said and done, he could be saying just about anything to make himself more sympathetic. The only thing that concerns me is the crime he committed, and how he can rectify it.

Me too, hence why I always make him redeem himself by killing the Desire Demon and saving Connor.

Sadly, yes.  I'm not sure why that never got fixed, but there we go.

Well... he can't. He can't heal the arl.

I had a hard time using him for that, because I think he has only like, 2 or 3 really damaging spells and the rest were entropy and I found them useless the first time.

Yeah I was a little surprised by the difficulty involved with using Jowan, but I like to think of his repeated deaths as part of his penance.

Obviously not, but anything within his capacity can serve as the next best thing, which is saving Connor.

That said, even if it was as simple as him performing some spell to undo the Arl's sickness, I would not have released him, because it would be like the cops letting a burglar go on his merry way because he was convinced to put the stuff back. I take the position that he acts as a man caught red-handed, not one acting out of the kindness of his heart. What matters is that he did it, and in the Warden's position, I must assume that if he wasn't caught, he would have likely run off and leave the Arl to his fate.

If there were penalties other than death or Tranquility, I probably wouldn't have released him, but I don't believe he deserves either, so I see it as the least bad option.

So attempted murder of the ARL of redcliff doesn't merit death? No offense, but take the mage/mundane thing out of it, he was a paid assassin who attempted to kill one of the most powerful nobles in Ferelden.

Not that jowan is really what I was wanting to focus on...

If it doesn't violate Xil's moral code, Xil doesn't deem it worthy of death.

I didn't kill Zevran, so killing Jowan would be inconsistent. Also, Jowan had been convinced that Eamon was a legitimate threat.

For myself, whether or not Jowan was truly convinced that the Arl was a legitimate threat is neither here or there. I guess from a perspective that knew Jowan well enough beforehand, it's easier to tell this about him, but for all I know, he could simply have been doing this for money, same as Zevran. Frankly, I'd rather that the paid patsies of Loghain and Howe earn their lives back by being forced to help. Take Berwick, the elf spy in Redcliffe. I only permitted myself two options with him: defend the village or die.

So as far as I'm concerned, he either earns his life back, or he gets a permanent furlough to the beyond.

Character wise, Jowan was my Surana Warden's closest friend since he was bereft of his family and friends from the Alienage, so my Warden trusted that Jowan wasn't malevolent, simply fooled by a living legend who earned the accolades of people for decades after helping overthrow the Orlesian Empire.

I think taking that option... you have to know that it's a death sentence either way. It seems rather cruel, to me.

Ok Xil, so by your logic it would be ok for me to try to kill you because I view you as a legitimate threat to my sanity :)  I kid I kid, but I don't get that argument at all sorry.  I can understand Lobs point of view of having a prior history with him I guess, but when I played the mage origin, it actually convinced me more that Jowan was too unhinged to run around willy nilly.  The templars/circle may very well be responsible for that, but that doesn't change the fact that he was no longer right in the head.

Its just like we don't let the mentally unstable buy firearms, Jowan never struck me as anything close to stable.
