Who makes a good team for the Dreadnaught without Tali?

One person recommended Liara and James. They apparently have a conversation about death vs slavery.

I was thinking EDI and Javik might make a good pairing. I expect Javik to shoot EDI in the back at some point. :) (Probably during the ops center fight so he can blame it on a hunter.)

What have you seen? Which characters have the funniest/most interesting interaciton?

Without Tali? Game forces Tali on your team on that one. It's mandatory. But yeah, Edi does have some nice lines over there.

What if Tali is dead? Does the game still force a character on you then?

No. You pick from your other squad mates. Xen is supposedly on the ship with you, but she splits off and (from what I have seen on youtube) contacts you by radio.

I think I am going to set it to Narrative mode and run through the mission a few times. EDI and Garrus. (Both know Legion) EDI and Javik (Javik hates EDI, hates all machines). James and someone, maybe Ash.

Yes. You get Admiral Xen, instead, but still not as a squadmate.

Edit: Ninjad. :D

Take T'soni and James. They both discuss slavery vs death

Oh I was hoping you'd get xen as a squadmate. I like her brand of crazy it's quite amusing.

If you take Ashley on the mission she will mention that Xen 'is not all there'

Run number one: EDI and Javik

A lot of the differences are simply the difference between Tali and Xen. Not sure any are related to team mate specific changes to account for the lack of Tali, although there was a small bit of back and forth between Javik and EDI.

-When looking at Rannoch through the docking tube, Shepard says Tali would have loved seeing it, and Joker comments that we have to win this for the sake of Tali.

-Xen somewhat criticizes Gerral for his attack plan, but then pats herself on the back for her technological breakthroughs

-Xen appears in the ops center after the fight is over and basically rehashes Tali's lines. She then cloaks before the next fight begins.

-Xen has a funny line about hacking Geth and having them serve her drinks (EDI is not pleased with Xen's attitude towards Synthetics.)

-Xen is none too pleased that Gerral is shooting at the Geth ship while she is on board

-Shepard promises to keep the engine running for Xen as they flee towards the fighter, but she doesn't show up until you get a view of Shepard & Co. in the back seat.

-Back on the Normandy Xen expresses regret at supporting the war

-Joker's post-mission dialogue is rather different. He talks about "our new alien allies" as if we had not been to the migrant fleet before. I think the assumption here is that the only reason Tali would die is because you didn't do her LM.

Team mate banter:

Never having taken Javik on this mission before, I don't know how much of his dialogue is related to EDI, and how much he would say anyway. But I did find out about the Protheans sparking a Supernova to wipe out the Zha'til. EDI commented that that is not an option in this case, to which Javik replied "not yet." Javik's post-mission dialogue did not differ, although Shepard's comment about him mentioning AI problems made more sense now.

You still get that dialogue even if you don't recruit Tali in ME2

The only reason Xen supports the war is to use her new "toys" otherwise the Quarians may not of attacked the Geth.

cap and gown, I thank you for that insight. I gravitate toward relatively dark playthroughs but I've never actually offed Tali. Nowadays I feel as though I got plenty of pyrrhic with the trilogy's endgame so I keep Tali and Garrus alive for ME3 at least. :P I appreciate your going into detail on how that mission plays out without her as I'm not much of a YouTube enthusiast.

Run number two: EDI and Garrus

Garrus commented than Xen is rather eccentric when she talked about hacking the Geth. His dialogue instead of EDI's may have been prompted because his position: right side.

When we met Legion Garrus said he was happy to see Legion, pause, "We are happy to see him, right? Legion wouldn't have sided with the Reapers would he?" I am not sure which squad mate I picked first here, EDI or Garrus. Garrus was on the right. Not sure if EDI would have commented instead if she were on the right. At any rate, if Tali had been here she would have objected that Legion could have been reprogrammed.

This time I took the paragon response "I trust Legion" and then EDI and Legion had a little back and forth about her mobile platform. This is the same dialogue you get if Tali is present. I think EDI's dialogue at this point is tied to Shepard's response.

EDI commented that the only reason the Geth sided with the Reapers was because of the Quarian attack. Garrus had no response to this at all, unlike Javik who thought the Geth should have committed suicide.

Run number three: Liara and James

Little to note here. On the EDI runs EDI objected to the Arc Pistol. Liara, however, noted that she knew people that would pay good money for the design. Xen was open to offers.

In response to Xen's hacking comments, Liara commented that her attitude did not inspire confidence.

Liara, my LI from ME1 & 2 but not yet locked in for ME3, caught Shepard on the elevator, but had no dialogue. On both the EDI runs EDI caught Shepard and had a line of dialogue.

When Legion explained why the Geth sided with the Reapers, James said it wasn't right, but Liara countered that if he could save Earth by sacrificing every other organic species in the Galaxy he would no doubt do it.

Run number four: Liara and Ashley

When Xen talked about hacking, Ashley responded "She's not all the way sane, is she?"

Liara's dialogue after meeting Legion was different. When Ashley said the Geth should have found another way, Liara responded that it is kind of hard to argue with a species trying to survive. Not sure why Liara's dialogue was different with Ashley than with James. Makes me wonder what she would say if Tali were with us; I don't think I have ever taken Liara on this mission before.

When you finish this playthrough, why not do it again except with the Geth VI instead of having Legion?

Run number five (and final): Ashley and James

James once again praised Xen's Arc Pistol "the right weapon for the job."

This time when James talked about the "FUBAR" design of the Geth ship he also added that it reminded him of the Collector ship he destroyed.

This time Ashley caught Shepard on the elevator, plus she had a line of dialogue, unlike Liara who did not have a line. It would seem that "female" (including EDI) team mates are prioritized for catching Shepard, while a LI has the highest priority. Can't say for certain though without checking whether a romanced Garrus would catch femshep.

Once again, Ashley was surprised that Shepard was on a first name basis with a Geth, even though her position within the squad was reversed from last time. There must be some prioritization here. Probably there is a Familiarity priority, followed by a Ruthlessness priority: squad mates familiar with Legion (EDI, Garrus) speak first, more "Ruthless" squad mates speak next (Javik, Ashley, James), while most paragon have the lowest priority (Liara, Kaiden). Just a guess since I don't have Kaiden available.

This time after Legion explains why the Geth allied with the Reapers, neither James nor Ashley had any comments.

Another reason for Tali not being there.... Mass Effect 3 is a great place to start!
