Now, I know what that statement brings for a discussion topic - emphatic "YES" or "NO" from fans and / or Bioware. Sorry. This is an idea I just thought of, and I liked it enough to post. And please don't bring up the indoctrination theory again, that idea is tripe.
Shep 'dies' at the end of ME3. Or does he? If the AI has the technology to do what he can in the blue / green options and to distill races to make reapers, why can't he 'save' Shepard? If he could breakdown people into atoms, then logically he could put them back together again.
Scenario: Shep is saved by the AI as a reward for his service. Shep commented in ME3 that he was pretty much done with 'saving the universe' before the big finale. In the chaos of the events post catalyst, he / she can quietly sneak away and retire - someplace very remote and very quiet. Let the events of the upcoming games invite the possibility of Shep entering the storyline then.
I really don't know if I'd want to see Shep in ME4, or even hint at anything. I loved the character, and miss him (my version of him), but a break from Shepard can be a good thing. Save the character for a giant 'Holy $?#@#! moment later in the ME franchise. I remember watching the Buffy series. A main character in the show (Giles) was gone a good while from the series, and surprisingly showed up near the end of season 6. That was a fantastic moment in the series, and one of my favorite memories from the series. I'd love to see something like that with Shepard.
My point - this is fantastic ammo for the future, let Shep's sacrifice settle for a time (5 years?) and gain acceptance (it took a while for me to accept it, but I finally do). Could you imagine Shepard appearing (even briefly) in a future trailer shown at E3? I can tell you that fans of the series would likely go crazy after seeing that.
