Now, I know what that statement brings for a discussion topic - emphatic "YES" or "NO" from fans and / or Bioware.  Sorry.  This is an idea I just thought of, and I liked it enough to post.  And please don't bring up the indoctrination theory again, that idea is tripe.

Shep 'dies' at the end of ME3.  Or does he?  If the AI has the technology to do what he can in the blue / green options and to distill races to make reapers, why can't he 'save' Shepard?  If he could breakdown people into atoms, then logically he could put them back together again.

Scenario:  Shep is saved by the AI as a reward for his service.  Shep commented in ME3 that he was pretty much done with 'saving the universe'  before the big finale.  In the chaos of the events post catalyst, he / she can quietly sneak away and retire - someplace very remote and very quiet.  Let the events of the upcoming games invite the possibility of Shep entering the storyline then.

I really don't know if I'd want to see Shep in ME4, or even hint at anything.  I loved the character, and miss him (my version of him), but a break from Shepard can be a good thing.  Save the character for a giant 'Holy $?#@#! moment later in the ME franchise.  I remember watching the Buffy series.  A main character in the show (Giles) was gone a good while from the series, and surprisingly showed up near the end of season 6.  That was a fantastic moment in the series, and one of my favorite memories from the series.  I'd love to see something like that with Shepard.

My point - this is fantastic ammo for the future, let Shep's sacrifice settle for a time (5 years?) and gain acceptance (it took a while for me to accept it, but I finally do).  Could you imagine Shepard appearing (even briefly) in a future trailer shown at E3?  I can tell you that fans of the series would likely go crazy after seeing that.

Still goes with a "Canon enforcing" problem... If you chose the "control" option... You didn't "die" you became immortal and corporeal... Why the feck would you go back to human? And lose the control of the reapers, thereby restarting the cycle again, since the reapers would default back to their meaning of life. Or do as all synthetics are doomed to do without the solution: Kill off all organics, sans cycle...
Both those things would show for quite a drab gaming experience don't you think?
Not quite the "whoopie" summoning scenery you'd think I must say...
And still having to either choose a canon Shepard or program in all different combos and stories depending on how YOU played your Shep. Just for a cameo? Nah...
So no... Leave Shepard totally out of it. No need to have Shep mentioned at ALL. Not a single time in the entire programming code or scripts... THAT would be best...
That's what I think...

If they are going to put Shepard back into Mass Effect I would wait until like Mass Effect 6. When the main protaganist is about to get killed and Shepard just comes flying in to save the day.

What Shepard is forced to do in order to "save" the galaxy has pretty much wrecked him for me.  I'm uninterested in seeing him anymore and would rather he disappeared into obscurity.

iakus and I have reached the same destination, though through vastly different routes. Enough with Shepard, already.

As with everything ME, its all or nothing. Either the storyline for ME4 takes place anytime after the activation of the crucible, in which case Sheppard is always there by inference in some form (Reaper Supervisor, Organic-Synthetic Blender or concerte [sic] rubble survivor), or its a prequel and he's just a glint in some earthborn's bloodshot eyes...

The real question is, if ME4 is chronologically after ME3, how do your saves in the trilogy get incorporated into ME quattro? After seeing how they got incorporated into the end of ME3 I am not expecting much...In fact, given the ending, wouldn't there have to be at least three distinct versions of the universe (and Game itself) depending on what awesome option you choose from the Star Kid?

It makes me think it'll be prequel/reboot, with some kind of weak Star Trek parallel universe or Dallas-esque dream sequence, designed to explain away any inherent logical inconsistencies. Of which there are bound to be many...I'm more and more convinced that ME4 will pull a Star Wars and the newest installments will center around the first contact wars and that way you'll be able to see familiar characters from time to time (ie: young Anderson) and do a play through of all the games eventually from middle to the begining and then to the end again (ME4 first, then ME5 & 6, followed by ME1, 2 & finally 3). The big finish in ME6 being what happened on Akuze...Setting up ME 7, 8 , and 9 for our grandkids....

Why look at the most negative canon possibility here?  Let Shep command the reapers to destroy themselves then.  Also why is being an immortal ghost exciting?  I'd think after a while that would get really boring.  No matter what, anything that takes place ahead of this game will have to take one of the canon choices as the ending and go forward.  It would be difficult to ignore it, wouldn't it?

As much as I love Shepard I think the best idea would be to only vaguely allude to him/her at the most. Three games worth of decisions and the huge side cast (and I'm sure if any were left out there would be plenty of complaints) would be a lot to manage for future games. Plus, I think a new protagonist would be exciting.

I'm just hoping ME4 isn't a prequel. It would be easier to go forward than backwards and try to make sure the story aligns properly with the original trilogy. Also want to avoid the inevitable obvious, heavy foreshadowing.

I liked Shepard but I totally agree with "let shepard rest in peace" feeling. This new game is the perfect chance for a new team to shape a completely new and fresh story arc while remaining familiar with the universe.

A prequel would be such a disappointment.

Agree with the move on sentiment. I love Shepard and Crew but it's time for someone completely different. Have a sequel and at the most let the only mention of Shepard be some passing reference to "Shepard was instrumental in the Reaper War." There's no good reason to see any of the same characters again.
