Gonna replay whole ME trilogy as a renegade soldier. In ME 1 as a soldier what companions would be best to use. I always used Tali and Liara but they either died a lot early or just suck against harder enemies. Any suggestions for companions as well as soldier tips?

You need to be able to unlock stuff, so you need a squadmate with Encryption and Decryption skills, so one of Tali, Garrus, or Kaidan. The other squadmate can be anyone else.
Other than that, the rest is up to you.
(Note that on my last Soldier playthrough, I took Decryption as a bonus power, and used Liara's Electronics (Encryption) skill for all my unlocking needs, and then used Kaidan as my other squadmate for double biotics. Worked great.)

Tali and Liara is the best squad from early to mid game for a Soldier IMO, until around mid game where Garrus can be subbed for Tali for better ranged firepower (if needed).
This is partly because of the need to unlock crates with Decryption and Electronics so hypothetically Garrus or Kaidan can also help you. Neither is particularly tanky early game (really nobody is with the possible exception of Ash and Wrex, depending on how you level them... but built as tank they have poor offensive output). Both Tali and Liara should be more than sufficient against large targets if you are building them correctly. Get Master Sabotage (Decryption) on Tali ASAP as well as Master Overload (from Electronics... incidentally she can unlock everything now and will have a lot more shields), then concentrate on AI Hacking for lower CD and better anti-Geth. You can max Tali's Sabotage and Overload basically right away on the Citadel when starting from Level 1 most of the time. After those 3 powers, it doesn't matter what you get, but consider some points in Pistols and Damping.
Liara should be leveled such that you are getting Master Lift ASAP. It will lift any target you need to fight in the entire game with only a few exceptions (Thresher Maws, Turrets...). In this manner you can alternate between Lift and Sabotage on something like a Colossus to render them harmless while you shoot them. Get Singularity, then go for Basic Barrier, and then consider going with her passive. IIRC there is a glitch with Liara where if you get all of her powers, some don't show up as usable. I typically get Overload / Electronics instead of Stasis.
