He does go a bit overboard with the humour in places. Like, "I don't do anything involving animals or children."

It's a coping mechanism.

Though off-topic, this blog is relevant to your last sentence.

And humour isn't always levity. It can have positive power and gravitas - perhaps even more so than misery. It can transform and elevate the worst things in life into something joyous and meaningful. It can inspire us to find something productive in our grimmest difficulties.

That is the kind of humour I want in the games I play. The kind that still exhibits respect for other people. Humour can do that. And the game developer I believe have come closest to that is BioWare. Others seem to think humour and restraint isn't compatible at all.

And that is one reason that I still do love DA2.

Coping mechanism for very good reason.

The big undercurrent of the story is "certainty". Not just the Certainty of the Qun, like the Arishok talks about. Seems like everyone has their own brand of Certainty. Meredith, Anders, etc..

In Kirkwall, "certainty" seems to be another word for "insanity". Sarcastic Hawke is someone without any "principle", as the Arishok accuses him/her of. Someone who found a niche in noncommitment and chaos, enjoys life for good or ill... instead of trying to control their environment. It might not be heroic, but it's a kind of person I'd admire in this situation. They're not going to win in the end though, sadly.

And the Male Version...

The sarcastic dialogue is the best in the game, since it's fun to play as a goofy oddball and see the bewildered reactions from some of the NPCs.

Oh, it's a monologue when Hawke leaves the Chantry on that quest, should've told me before xD

I prefer female version of that monologue though, she has a better sarcastic sound :D

S/he only talks to themselves after that one quest, if it's only Hawke there and no-one else is in your party. Apart from that, you can't make Hawke talk to themselves during the rest of the game.

Edit: Ah, you Ninja'd me.

And the "coping mechanism" is Hawke's tendency to use humour to deflect the horror and tragedies around them, something that's common when people are prone to dealing with a lot of stressful situations on a regular basis. You either go crazy bottling it up or you just embrace the lunacy and make a joke about it.

I love how Aveline calls Hawke out on this after the death of their mother, that they're cracking jokes and pretending to be fine when they're obviously not. It was one of those moments that made me really enjoy DA2 and how human the characters often came across.

I played the humorous personality for my mage Hawke, with the idea that humor was how he kept his mind fortified and at ease at all times -- just not taking anything too seriously. Good story there, but while his jokes can be great, there are also some real clunkers there too.

Also, the "special options" for humorous Hawke suck. Crying "Fire!" is a good one, but other than that, nothing worthwhile. In contrast, Diplomatic Hawke is fairly good at settling some disputes, and Aggressive Hawke can really get people to shut up and do things for him/her.

'Just prefer the no-nonsense type hero that is Aggressive Hawke, myself.

I also liked that moment because it shows that Aveline is probaly the only person that truly understands how sassy Hawke is. The others either get annoyed, ignore you or laugh at your jokes, but not Aveline, she is the one that truly understands Hawke, that knows what makes you thick.

Like how I approach renegon Shepard, my Hawke is sarcastic on average, but is diplomatic or aggressive when it feels appropriate. Going full humor in every dialogue option would be pretty ridiculous.

The fire option is funnier with Merrill, since she totally blows the entire Bavarian Fire Drill you nearly pulled off. "Yes, Merrill, it was a trick..."

Which is another reason I never understand how she ended up with that wet blanket known as Donnic, since scenes like that show clearly Aveline why has far more of a connection with Hawke. Reminds me of that line of dialogue in Act 1 where she admits to having sometimes camped on their doorstep to make sure Hawke's family was safe. Dammit, why couldn't we romance her?

Yeah, I never go sarcastic during serious moments, I'm usually either diplomatic when people die or I'm trying to be consoling, or aggressive when someone is being threatened or Hawke's button is really being pushed. The sarcastic dialogue during Sameus' death, as well as the automatic dialogue when Hawke tells Emeric about the mage killed by Quention, makes me want to seriously punch them.

I never picked the sarcastic comment during Seamus' death. It just seemed like a dick move, but then there's no way to make a lighthearted comment while someone is grieving over their dead son's body really come off well.

Yeah, I found sarcastic Hawke the best out of them all.  I like the joking around all the time as a coping mechanism for Hawke.  It's also the only Hawke I can see realistically being with Isabela in a long term relationship.

I did find the best party to be Sarcastic Hawke, Isabela, Varric, and Aveline.  Though Carver is a good substitute for Aveline as well in the DLCs.

I switch it up between acts (I'm sure this is known, but if you didn't know, you can change the personality at the beginning of each Act). I like being Aggressive in Act 2. Your siblng is gone, and everyone in the city wants something. Worst of all, the Arishok wants something. And I'm already sick of him anyways.

Hawke is from Lothering. Bethany said one of her friends was killed by Sten (hell, I could headcanon my Hawke's lover was among them too). I don't like that, I don't like their religion, and I don't like their need for conquest.. So yeah, I have to go aggressive. The story options are better for me. I just think of my character as a rogue-ish immigrant. She isn't super enlightened or wants World Peace. Not yet at least. That's one thing I like about Hawke over the Warden (and possibly the Inquisitor). She's the most down to earth of the bunch. A "boondock saint" of sorts.

I can't stay aggressive after Hawke's mom dies though. Act 3 is different. I blame myself for her death.

That's part of the point, though. It's not about making the Viscount feel better. It's about Hawke trying to cope with the insanity of the whole situation as Kirkwall basically falls apart around him.

I guess it's always subject to personal interpretation, but in that situation, it probably would not have hit me to make such a comment while someone is weeping over his son's corpse.

I just tell him to get ready for the Qunari (/aggressive).

I hate the Viscount though. He's Diplomatic to the extreme. If Varric calls Diplomatic Hawke "Waffles", I wonder what his nickname for Dumar is. That guy is extremely weak.

Same. I think it's the most sensible option among the three, even though I already knew even in a blind playthrough that aside from weeping, he's just going to recoil into his office and do nothing but wait for someone else to resolve the situation. He was so wishy-washy it was a bit frustrating, and while I hate Sister/Mother Petrice, I shared her and the Arishok's disdain for him.

Varric calls diplomatic Hawke "Waffles"? That's just another reason to avoid that personality.

I like Diplomatic or Sarcastic for Act 1.. At least if you're not a mage. Then you're just a fresh off the boat kid who lost their home and Carver, and trying to lie low. If you're a mage, it makes sense to me to just go full gusto like Anders. Already brewing up Revolution in your mind off the bat.

Viscount is a wimp. I used all comments on him when he's crying about his son. I believe had the Viscount had any balls, that situation may never of happened

I find diplomatic to goody-two-shoe, sarcastic fits the best and aggressive not bad. If I start a game playing sarcastic, I play that way the whole game.
