DAO Ultimate Edition Fix?

I have been finding threads on this topic dating back several years, but I thought I might make a more recent one to see if the situation has changed.

There seems to be a common problem with the Ultimate Edition of DA:O, at least when purchased through the Steam Client. I'm not sure if it goes beyond that, but that's my situation. It's simply that the game crashes. The timing is completely random, no warning, no common cause. I don't get a blue screen of death, and the logs show nothing other than an 'unexpected shutdown'. My computer just restarts, and not properly, either. It will happen a few minutes into the game or sometimes a few hours. Like I said, it's random.

I am running Windows 7 on a fairly powerful machine, one that can handle much more intensive games than DAO, so overheating is no issue. My PC just shuts off instantly to reboot.

It's been made clear that EA never intends to fix the issue, since it's been several years that people have been asking about this. I was simply wondering if there was any kind of unofficial patch or a fix that anyone has found for this. I would even be fine if someone knew how to stop it from restarting my the computer; I could deal with the game itself just crashing. That would be irritating, yes, but I wouldn't avoid playing.

Any help with this would be much appreciated, if there's any to be had, even after so long. DAO is still a great game, and it's frustrating not to be able to enjoy it.

Are you sure you don't have a virus? I have Vista, and play DAO with a disk, not through Steam. My game has crashed off and on over the years, but never made my computer restart on it's own. Maybe someone else has a better answer for this. My crashes have always come from mods and seem to happen in different places after doing certain things. I always restart my computer before playing and make sure my unit is cool enough. My video card was overheating at one point and made my game crash. Good luck.

No, this is no virus. It only happens with DAO. No other game or application. I've seen quite a few similar complaints from years past, but there's never been any answers, just a lot of people saying they are having the same problem. There hasn't been an update to the game since, so it's still the same patch number and all.

I just looked it up, and there was never a clear answer from anyone. :(

Yeah... Unfortunately. Was hoping someone here might have some new info my searches aren't finding. There are fan patches to fix problems with much less popular games. Why not this one, I thought.

No, I had not seen that. It's a complete shutdown, not a crash to desktop, but a different system could react in different ways, so I will give that a try. Thanks for the help, even if it doesn't solve the issue.

May I make a suggestion? I don't play on a pc, but a ps3.

Would it be a lot to ask if you might purchase the game, with disk copy, and see if that helps. I don't mean buy a ps3, but a disk copy for your pc. I bought my Ultimate Edition nearly 2 yers ago for $19.99. So it might be cheaper today.

If you already have a disk copy then I apologize for wasting your time.

I'm much more a PC gamer than a console gamer. The PC allows for much better control, a better UI, and a lot more customization. Not to say the console versions are bad, but Dragon Age Origins was designed for the PC. In some way, it does come down to personal preference, I know, and playing a consol version would avoid these crashes. But, I grately prefer PC versions, and purchasing the game again isn't really an expense I can spare.

In my pc, DAO actually makes the CPU run hotter than even most recent dx11 games. I have had such sudden restarts with my laptop while playing DAO when the CPU temperatures reached 85 degrees. I'll take your word about your machine not overheating. But if you are not 100% sure, you might try monitoring the temperatures or stress testing. The stock thermal compound do tend to dry up sometimes, which was the case with my laptop. Just thought I'd share this, it might not even be relevant in your case.

If I don't have any luck with the processor affinity fix, I'll try that. I suppose it could be less well optimized than some newer games, though games like Civ 5 and a heavily modded build of MInecraft put more strain on the CPU than I would think a game like DAO should. That was my thinking, anyhow, but I could be wrong. So, yeah, I'll check that out as well if setting the affinity doesn't work.
