Dunno, but I know I'd like to play a game where a team of players control a large military space vessel in co-op and have to execute missions. Space battle, boardings, stellar body invasions (I mean planets - not the blue babes), whatever.

And zero-g environment. With headbutts. And blue babes.

I wouldn't mind it being ME, but I doubt something like that will be in the next game.

To be a proper competition to WoW, the game needs to not be a WoW clone, something that it seems companies developing MMOs don't seem to understand.

Why should I as a WoW subscriber leave my guild and characters that I have had for years to play another game that is the same, I thought SWTOR could be one to break the clone curse with the better story telling, but 2+ years later and it hasn't added to the one thing that made it unique and stand out.

Mass Effect as a MMO, I doubt it will be Mass Effect as we know it now since they'd likely strip down the story elements since they're clearly not expanding what made SWTOR interesting in the first place.

It can work as a PvP focused shooter, not a game I'm personally interested in playing, but with the popularity of shooters, it might be able to work.

I think someone should be able to recognize the success that WoW has had and see the potential for profit there. I would also think a company could recognize it's mistakes learn from them while incorporating the things they had success with as well. IDK that EA wants to take another risk there but someone will eventually get it right.

It could work but it would require the sort of level of ongoing investment I doubt BioWare would want to make - nor perhaps be allowed to make under EA.

To play to BWs stengths it would have to be an MMO where story arcs could be rolled in by the devs and outcomes have real, tangible effects on the persistent world(s) depending on what the player-base did, or didn't, do. it would need to be a sort of blend of Planetside 2, with some of the team-finding and mission execution stuff akin to how City of Heroes used to do it... and probably roll in some of the ideas that seem to be gong towards Everquest Next.

In short - it could be cool if it was done well, but the odds on that happening are slim to none as it would be unlikely to be profitable.

I think it would be a disaster. In any case I think it wouldn't be ME any more.

no, and you should be thrown out of the airlock for even thinking of the words Mass Effect and MMO in the same sentence... :P

I think it would probably be a disaster as well because it wouldn't be done right but it could be done and it could be an enhancement of ME instead of taking away from it.

Who wouldn't want to explore some of the planets, aliens, and cultures of ME more? It could be done and be really good if they commit to doing it the right way.

Like everyone else, I'm sceptical of the chances of it being done well, but if they really came up with smart ways to computer generate story arcs it could be awesome. I remember reading about some software developer (maybe the guy behind Bioshock infinite?) planning on using story-generation techniques to provide extensive content without astronomical costs.

I loved the uncharted worlds of ME1 despite their unfinished state, because I felt I was exploring the universe. A game where you start as a merc of whatever race and can then join groups, maybe get your own ship and explore the pre-reaper ME universe would be something I'd want to buy. I'd just be nervous about whether they could pull it off!

Yes, it would probably work as a watered-down version of a great game.  No, I wouldn't play it.

I'm not here to dog TOR, or EA - or any of the MMO makers.

I used to play WoW - a lot.  Server maintenance would go into overtime, and I would get twitchy, needing my digital fix.  I'm never going through that again.

No MMO can be as good as a game where I make all of the choices.    :D

Being not exactly an MMO aficionado, I have serious doubts that this would be a good idea to do such a game in the ME Universe and I doubt that I would want to play it.

Given the fact that my initial reaction to hearing about a multiplayer component in ME 3 was considerably more negative than that.....why not, bring it on and we´ll see. The only thing I am pretty sure about is that I would not be entering any type of subscription model for a video game.

An interesting take would be a MMO "Mass Effect: Sol" set immediately after the final battle of the Earth, with three distinct servers: Destroy, Control and Synthesis. A lot of alien races in a relatively small solar system, with mass relays damaged... that'd be interesting.

Yes I'd play it.

Heck, if they let me explore planets by driving my buddies around in Mako, I might even play it twice! I don't see it happening that way, though.

I see no reason why Mass Effect couldn't or shouldn't branch out into other genres, as long as they're done well and are a positive contribution to the series I don't see why future games should be limited to one style of game.

As for a MMO specifically, whilst the idea is fine, I wouldn't really want them to do a Mass Effect MMO, but then that's purely because I have no real interest in MMOs in general and I would much rather Bioware spent their time and money on other things. :?

ME MMO would be a crazy hellhole with tons of Juggies everywhere stealing kills on other Juggies.

Just my $0.02—

No, it wouldn't work. BioWare's forte is creating a story and world that responds to you and your actions. At the heart of it are those character interactions that change based on what you've said and what you've done. I played KotOR during a pre-expansion slump in WoW, and started in on ME during another; the idea that I actually made a difference just because I chose one conversation choice over another was revolutionary. I'd been spending years as "Random Adventurer #8942718," where the only people who call me by my actual in-game name are guildmates and friends in the game.

MMOs, like Warcraft, take away the agency that made BioWare games popular in the first place. You're given a quest, you do the quest, you get a reward, you move along. Sometimes, there's a mini story to discover and see it through. You go from fledgling wanderer to big-time adventurer and you find there's a big bad guy in need of killing. Boom, you're a hero— nameless, but you're still called a hero. It's a matter of following one breadcrumb to another until you get to the big event. In GW2, you wander from place to place and find tasks to do. FFXIV tried to force the MMO aspect more and made instances mandatory in order to advance in story, questing, and, therefore, level— imagine it like SWTOR except everyone is doing the same exact storyline with the exception of a few side quests (which, ironically, happen to be your class/profession quests).

SWTOR tried to preserve the idea of "make a choice" with Light/Dark side options in your class story and instances so you had at least two different outcomes to see. But, as others mentioned before, you got to the end of your story and suddenly you were thrust into a Warcraft-like setting where you become another nameless adventurer doing all the same stuff as everyone else and, suddenly, the magic is gone.

Could an ME MMO work as something that you do as a part of a squad and it's a combo of ME3MP and side missions via planet exploration like ME1 (riding around in a Mako, like Jeremiah suggested)? Maybe. But the point of an MMO is to create a world and let you run around within the designated regions. What would the quests be? If no quests, then just imagine hundreds of people riding around in their Makos, finding a compound in the field... Only to have to wait for others to finish or mobs to respawn. Sure, you could make the area instanced but, then, that kinda defeats the purpose of the MMO. One of the things I did like about SWTOR was finding random regions by exploration that automatically gave you objectives and you could team up with others to get it done— some were instanced, some not.

TL;DR: Just not sure you could preserve the ME feel and apply it to a bigger, wider world.

Anyways, like I said— just my two cents. Interested to see what others think.

too bad NFS opted out of making good games and decided to make a horrible movie instead....facepalm.

I still hate them for never repeating the greatness that was the original NFS Hot Pursuit... best NFS game ever and none since have ever really came close to that game.
