I am planning to write a fanfiction story that takes place after the events of Mass Effect 3. In this story, set a year after the Reaper war, the crew of the Normandy uncovers more evidence about the Leviathans, the original creators of the Reapers, and a new threat that threatens an already recovering Galaxy. The problem is that because of the vast variety of stories that can be made with Mass Effect, I need to write a story that manages to incorporate most of the choices players can make in the main game. So I'm running a little poll of various choices and events that might have unfolded during the main game trilogy. Answer the following in the comments below, and after 2 weeks I will average out the best results to use for my story.

 

Note: This poll is assuming that everyone survived the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2 and that no one chose the Refusal ending in Mass Effect 3. I'm also assuming you managed to get the "good" (high EMS) ending.

For characters living/dying, if there are characters that you have a particular interest in (Kaiden vs Ashley for example) then choose that one.  Do you have any interesting ideas that you could use for the rachni?  If so, they were saved, if not, meh.  Basically, I'd recommend you write the story you want to write, as opposed to finding the centre 'demographic' and pandering to it.  ^^

Thanks for all the supporting being placed into this fanfic. For those wondering about why I did the survey, I want readers to connect to THEIR story. I want to show how THEIR choices impacted the galaxy as the new terror arrives. But I guess I can just write the story three times, each based on a Mass Effect ending.

 

A couple pointers based on some comments:

1. I didn't include Thane in the list because he unfortunately doesn't survive Mass Effect 3 and I couldn't see how the romance would affect the galaxy.

2. I didn't include Kaiden in the male romance list because he is not an "official" male romance option (it's easier to stick the main code) and I never really liked Cortez's character and canonically have him die during Mass Effect 3.

Because of the support and the probing to just wing my stories, I've decided to give a brief idea of my Aftermath fanfic.

 

The story takes place a year after the events of Mass Effect 3. As the galaxy is slowly rebuilding itself, the crew of the Normandy discover something big. A Reaper code fragment reveals the crew about the true fate of the Leviathans, the original creators of the Reapers. It turns out they weren't destroyed, but were imprisoned in deep space by the Reapers. Now, with the Reapers destroyed or "deprogrammed" the Leviathans manage to escape their prison and set their sites on retaking the Milky Way galaxy and destroy its meager inhabitants.

 

Aside from a fun continuation, this fanfic is meant to give players a small idea about how their actions in the game impacted the entire galaxy and your friends.

Things to consider with the leviathans. If they're in deep space, they're going to have to get back into the galaxy. This means via space ships. This also means gathering resources and building them. Note that they are not very good at manual dexterity, so building intricate stuff is not their thing. There shouldn't be very many of them. They had to eat unless they were in stasis for a billion years which would have required energy. Still there shouldn't be very many of them.

I thought about the Leviathans, and decided that instead of emerging from deep space, they would emerge from secret Repear built chambers inside many of the planets, including Palavan, Tuchanka, and Rannoch. Also, I know the Leviathans were shown being weak, but I wanted to show that they were a much larger and smarter threat than previously conceived.

They were not shown as being weak. They were arrogant. Also the leviathan orbs would have been destroyed by the Crucible -- they were high tech, and very close to reaper tech at that. 

 

Honestly I disregard the Leviathan DLC. It's only purpose is to justify the existence of the Starchild IMO. Those were not the original Leviathans anyway. That would have been an asspull beyond even my capability, and I'm good at it. But they sure talked the game: "the intelligence still serves its purpose." How many generations could have transpired in a billion years? If an organism lived for 3000 years, the chances of all the knowledge of the reapers being passed on in their aquatic prison would be almost nil. The reapers would become legends, then disappear. 

 

Another thing is their size. Food supply. They need a lot of it. So there goes that. And if they're a deep sea organism, I don't think they're going to be that huge. Evolution won't allow it. Look at the sizes of deep sea organisms. 

 

One thing is Shepard's first item of business after the war -- go back and launch an asteroid into the world where they found the Leviathans. 

 

I'm not saying you can't do it. I'm saying you've got a lot of groundwork to lay. They would have to have immediate access to the ocean. And a warning -- do not overpower your enemy.

After a bunch of pondering, I decided to scrap the idea of the Leviathans and instead opted for a story that involves the Normandy finding a way into the Reaper homeworld and discovering a brand new threat which I called the Wraithes.

 

The Wraithes are an army of synthetic machine built by the Reapers with the harvested organic life, programmed to continue the work of the Reapers should they fail their purge. At the time of this story, the Wraithes are still incomplete, with the only code being to destroy all organic DNA, so in my story which involves a synthesis ending, that would mean every species, organic and synthetic, is in grave danger.

 

This story will be written 3 times for each ending, with the first version being based on my gameplay experience. This story should not be considered canon, as it will also bridge to several crossovers including Doctor Who, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even the Walking Dead.
