Okay, so I've had this idea for the next Mass Effect game for a while now and I thought that it's about time I shared it here. I work in Customer Service for a popular gaming console and when I let other Mass Effect players know about this idea, I've always got positive feedback.

My idea is this, take the customisation of the main character to the next level. Let us choose which species we belong to. Be it Human, Quarian, Kroga, Salarian, etc, let us pick to be either a male or female from that species.

"You're crazy, Vespervin" is what your probably thinking. "Why would a Krogan work for the Alliance and/or the Citadel?" Think of this. Make the back story for the character somewhat generic. Make it so our character is from the Terminus Systems and has no allegiance to anybody, some Mercenary or Freelance individual with a particular skill-set that the Alliance/Citadel needs. Eventually, our character could be drawn to the cause, or do the job for the credits and glory. This way, we could be any species and it would still make sense.

Differences between being, say, a Human and a Quarian? Maybe the Human was born and raised on Earth, but for some reason had to flee to the Terminus System. Perhaps you were framed for something you did not do, and the best way to clear your name and live a normal life is to accomplish the mission provided to you. As for a Quarian? Probably got stuck in the Terminus System while trying to locate rare technology for the Flotilla and got stuck there, and now it's been many years? I don't know, I'm not the story writer here - I am sure someone at BioWare can do a better job but you see where I am coming from, yes?

Now the setting of the next game and when it's set (pre-ME1, post-ME3?) does come into play but I'm sure it can work.

Thoughts?

(p.s If this is the wrong forum, then sorry. Not sure where else to put this.)

EDIT

This was posted by Master Che on page 3, regarding the possible back story for the species you choose, and I love this idea.

1) Human - disgraced Alliance soldier; court marshalled. Your actions were necessary at the time, but violated military code.  It was either you and your squad dies or you commit this war crime.

2) Turian - disgraced C-Sec officer.  Your partner died under suspicious circumstances.

3) Krogan - disgraced clan member; exile or death for something you're accused of doing

4) Quarian - took the pilgrimage and never looked back.

5) Asari - Former Asari Commando; you're blamed for the death of the Matriarch you were protecting...falsely?

6) Batarian - You pissed off some slavers that you worked for.

It would be definitely be interesting to play as a non-soldier (occupation not class) this time around. It was great being a figurehead for Alliance and humanity, but it would be refreshing to be a merc.

I'm all for this.

As for the multiple race option for the PC, I'm actually assuming they're already going to implement it since it's by popular demand. Who knows though

There are rumors that there will be multiple playable races this time. That speculation is based on a rumored private fan panel at PAX where the participants were shown a lineup of the series main races and asked which two they would eliminate, if they had to. Some are speculating that Bioware might be exploring mutilple playable races this time around, and the question was related to that.

Supposedly Quarians and Krogan were the two that were picked by the panel.

Of course since this all speculation based on a Pax panel whose existence hasn't been officially confirmed with Bioware, a heavy dose of salt might be needed.

How anyone could eliminate the Quarians or Krogan from Mass Effect is beyond me. Reading it this way, it sounds like they're talking about eliminating them from being playable, which is a shame because Quarians are my favourite species with Asari. It would be very disappointing for me to not be able to play as a Quarian, but I'd hopefully be able to play as an Asari.

I would love to play as another species. That has been one of my dreams ever since getting into Mass Effect. That dream was slightly lived during Mass Effect 3's multiplayer game, but I want to roleplay as another species. I want to feel what it is like (what we can interpret) to be an alien; a member of another species. I want to feel their culture and how different it is from all human cultures. I want to see how differently they think. I just want to feel very different. If it is to be this way, I want to feel very uncomfortable in some situations; I want to be given choices that don't seem like something a human would choose. In short: I want the alien experience in Mass Effect 4 to be turned up (even if we don't get to play as aliens, which would be a huge disappointment).

Personally, I would prefer not to be a mercenary. Being a mercenary just really isn't my style. I'd much rather be a Quarian scientist/engineer working for the Quarians on Rannoch or an Asari commando adept working for Asari high command. I mean, we could even be given a choice for who we want to work for (a la Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines with a lot more choice). So you could basically choose who you want to work for: be a mercenary, become a SPECTRE, work for you species' government, maybe even be a black ops group.

It sounds like you're thinking of a Dragon Age: Origins style beginning, where your background depends on the race (and possibly gender or class) that you choose. I think this would be great, provided that it was done right.

I don't know how feasible this is, but I always thought it would be cool to pick from a roster of different player characters, each with a different background and storyline to play out.  They would cross paths throughout course of the game and depending on who you picked and the choices you make, the others would either be recruitable as squadmates or show up as antagonists.  I think this would help give all of the characters a bit more personality and make the game more interesting because you would see the NPCs as more than just robots to be manipulated, but actual individuals with choices of their own to make.

I would generally assume if this is set X amount of time after 3 so its not in shepards shadow, I would imagine the Council Races would be the playable ones, I really wish we knew when/where/how ME4 will be set

Same here. And for all we know there may not even be a Council anymore. Given that we know the Citadel was created by the Reapers(or the Levy's) I wouldn't even want to use it anymore lol.(that's if it is even still usable)

The races I would like;

Quarian

Turian

Asari

Salarian

In that order.

I'm pretty sure there's still a council; after all, the Citadel was rebuilt in the end (assuming you chose one of the choices the Catalyst gave you) as well as the Mass Relays. In fact, I'm betting the Council actually grew to include the Quarians, Krogan and perhaps even the Volus, Elcor and Hanar and Drell (maybe even the Rachni, assuming you saved the queen?), seeing as they all contributed to the war effort to save the galaxy.

The species I would like are:

Quarian

Asari

Salarian

Human

Turian

As I said before, I'm highly doubtful that the Quarians would be a playable species, unfortunately, along with the Krogan. However, I fully expect them to be represented in the game if they are not. I'd kill to see Rannoch rebuilt (that glimpse of it in the extended cut dlc was amazing) as well as see what the Krogan have done for Tuchanka (terraforming?).

What I would love to see are the various backgrounds you might be able to choose for a character of a different species (like how Shepard could have been a colonist/spacer/etc).

One example I can think of right now is an Asari pureblood. I'd love to see how that could effect the Asari character in dealing with other Asari ingame, especially if the opinion on purebloods changed after the Reaper war (Thessia and its worlds have to rebuild somehow and Asari importing other species for procreation is just unrealistic and cliche).

Continuing to use the Citadel, would almost feel like a betrayal. I would send what was left of it into the Sun lol.

The Rachni on the Council seems a bit much to me. May as well add the Geth, if you are going that route lol. I'd be willing to accept the Krogan, but even then that's pushing it lol they are just too hot headed to be diplomatic. Wrex had to be convinced to be diplomatic and even then look at his attitude on Sur'Kesh. Can't say I blame him. The Volus, weren't most of them wiped out? The Hanar and the Drell would only have one counselor, as they are considered one society.

The Quarians better be playable. I can do without the Krogan, but not the Quarians lol

I do agree about the backgrounds though, that would be interesting. Salarian STG member would be cool.

Well, the Citadel was rebuilt, so there's not much to change about that. They're obviously going to use it again, so I can't wait to see how it has been rebuilt. I'd also like to explore other wards, especially those that are dominated by Salarian, Turian and Asari culture.

It may seem a bit much, yes. Perhaps the Rachni might just have their own little part of the galaxy they rule, or maybe they actually want to be part of multi-species politics. We won't know until ME 4. It would be interesting either way, though. I'd like to see how they would rebuild their species.

The Krogan don't seem to be as odd on the Council. Wrex himself, as well as Bakara, stated they wanted the Krogan to be part of the galaxy and contribute to it, so I could see them on the Council or at least have an embassy there. It doesn't mean dealing with the Krogan would be an easy feat, but when has interspecies politics ever been easy?

I'd love to see the Quarians playable too, as they were my first love in Mass Effect. I really loved Kal'Reegar, Han'Gerrel, Daro'Xen and Veetor'Nara as well as Shala'Raan and Tali, of course.

Well, a Salarian STG member would be something someone would have to work towards, rather than start out as, but yeah, I'd really love for some interesting character backgrounds.

The 4 council races would be a decent selection for the main character...but I'm somewhat surprised that people picked salarians over krogan.

Well, Krogans are awesome, but they make for a pretty bad RPG player character. Even the not-as-violent ones are still pretty violent. Wrex is portrayed as the future for their race, but he isn't known for his calm temper.

It really depends on what the role of the main character is. If it's a space pirate, then a Krogan would could be done well. Who knows.

Well, a character in a roleplay is what ever you make them, to be honest. They can have whatever temperament the roleplayer has in mind. Isn't that what most of the renegade options in the trilogy are for?

Let's not shoe-horn an entire species into a specific temperament either, that would make it impossible for any character to be unique, which roleplaying is all about being a unique character.

Assuming for a moment that all of this is legit, I'm surprised the Quarians were nixed by the panel. If I had to bet on which three alien species were the fan favorites across the board, I'd place my bet on Turians, Asari, and Quarians. Of course with a small panel of a few dozen(?) people you can have anything show up in the results.

Krogan are awesome until you consider that romances are likely to be a big factor in the game, just as they are in all previous Mass Effect games. A Krogan involved in a romance, with a say human female character, would be a little weird. Even the Turians are pushing it a bit, but after Garrus I suppose the genie is out of that particular bottle.

If there are playable races in the next game I think Bioware should limit it to the fairly human-looking species for that reason, Turians being the exception. No Salarians, Krogan, Geth, Protheans, ect.

I think the Salarians would be fine, seeing as how widespread and involved in the galaxy they are. Geth and Protheans would be terrible, however.

Oh yeah, I'm okay, haha. It's just kinda bleh if that actually ends up the case because getting me to pick anything but human in games is already like pulling teeth but I was literally just thinking this morning about how I might be persuaded to exit my comfort zone for Mass Effect's quarians or krogan. :P

Well, we already knew people saved the geth more than quarians, therefore it didn't really surprise me. You're right about the romances. I guess an asari love interest could work for a salarian or krogan protagonist. I mean, we see such couples in the games. But Bioware won't make its decision dependent on one panel anyway. I think humans, asari and turians are safe bets if they make multiple playable races. The rest? Who knows...I guess it depends on the time span, whether or not the writers want to canonize events (Rannoch, genophage,), etc.
