Meh I'm fine if limited to human only, if it helps them keep more focus on the character and story. I felt like in Inquisition people liked the option to be different races, but then also complained when they were not as fleshed out as theyd hoped.

Though for the N7 stuff heres hoping you just went through and passed the training then got out some how. I'd really much rather be like a merc, smuggler, bounty hunter or anything related to an Underworld type setting. We already got to play the golden boy/girl of the universe and military so let us get a different style of the Mass Effect universe.

I felt like they tried to make it a fact how the Terminus system was such an unruly dangerous place in ME1 but then it never really got to go too deep into it, so I think it would be nice to be a character that gets to dive into the darker and more dangerous aspects of the universe.

I'm sure it will be human again, because promotional art does show N7 being on the "main hero".

There is still a great deal of similarity between them because of that role. If it was an rpg with a sequel and you played Kirk in one and Picard in the second, I think it would feel like a very similar character.

I couldn't disagree more about Kirk & Picard. They wore the same uniform, and but both had very different approaches to solving problems.

My Warden & the Inquisitor were two very different characters as well, despite both being Thedosian human nobles. I think some fans are overreacting a bit in assuming that two characters being N7s means that they'll be the same.

In a game? Where you can to some extent choose dialogue and your approach to solving problems?

The warden and inquisitor had completely different roles, they could based on the player choice behave in a very similar manner.

The protagonist of ME3 and ME:Next are N7s.

I'm not really seeing a difference between those two. DA of course provides you an option of playing a character with a different background from your Warden, but you can choose an identical background and yet roleplay a character with different approach to solving problems, different views, or a different moral code. There is no reason why an N7 in ME:Next automatically means Shepard 2.0.

One little idea that pops into my brain would be to give the player the choice to play the game not as Not-Shepard but as one of the side characters from the previous games. Like having a choice between the six most popular side characters from the trilogy. Shouldn't be too much work: just swap the character model and have the actor record all the lines with a few differences in the dialogue that are more in line with the characters history and personality. They could sell it as DLC: Bioware is with EA: they like selling a lot of DLC crap at us, don't they?

Me, I would love playing the game as Kaidan, Ashley or Miranda. Whatever, it's not gonna happen. But then my expectations for ME4 were not that high to begin with...

I don't support multi-race options for the protagonist in ME4. I feel like it makes him/her less of a character, and more like an empty vessel for the player. If that makes sense.

I would prefer to be human only. DA:I showed me that multiple playable races equate to mediocre protagonist as the inquisitor who lacked personality and charisma. I would prefer someone more defined as a protagonist and not the empty vessel known as the inquisitor. Humans only is better for story purposes.

The protagonist should be human only. Real justice cannot be done for multiple playable races and having a bland and generic background would just weaken the new series from the start. The quality of the story should take precedent over re-skins.

More robust backgrounds and their effects on the story should be the focus for a better protagonist. They started with this method initially in ME1 but did not follow through with it to the consecutive games which was a mistake.

If they make the backgrounds have a strong and lasting effect on the story they would be excellent additions to the new game.

Its a pretty hilarious notion that if you met on soldier then you've met them all -_- It'd be like saying both Solid Snake and Big Boss arr the exact same character

I'm sure all Krogan are mindless butchers and all Turians are tactical genius who value military above all else. Hell both Ashley and Kaidem were practically palette swaps

Honestly whoever says both Shepard and this new guy will ne the same may as well label themselves an idiot

So, from what i've heard there's going to be 2 new races showing up in ME4 right? i heard something along these lines atleast.

I think it's safe to assume one of those 2 are going to be the new badguys probably.

So here's an idea...how about have us play as a member of the other new race? coming to the established races for help or something?

I'd totally play that.

Have to say i'd prefer they stick with the single race for protagonist.

Personally i hope its not going to be Alliance focused but given the importance they have placed in the N7 brand it probably will be.

If it is to be that i'll have to hope there's much more of an ME2 approach where proper roleplaying options to express happiness or resentment towards that authority.

I think the elf Inquisitor (+ maybe a Solas romance) ties into the plot really well...and I definitely feel more attached to the Warden/the inquisitor than Shepard.

I would really like to play as a Quarian or Turian but I won't mind if it's human only.

Playable species are possible. But people expecting their pick of any species making up the MEU, are simply delusional. This isn't a game featuring a silent protagonist. We're not going to have 9 playable races like Skyrim. We're most likely going to be designated to humans, but if there is species selection, expect it to be contained to the Council species (give or take the Salarians)

A question to those who might like to play as non-human: Would you be satisfied if the game severely restricts your character's appearance options in the CC?

The devs will have x budget to spend on the character creator and armor customization - more species options can necessitate fewer appearance customization options per species.

I think some people have a lot of fun creating unique looking PCs, though others seem perfectly content with a default. You might have only a couple of, for example, turian face patterns from which to choose.

Even if we can only play as a human I think it is worth investing quite a bit into their character designer. We will see aliens in cutscenes a lot and this stuff can be used for years and years to come.

According to my information it's the quarians who have their days numbered.  But that's rumor mongering.

If they won't give us our pick they could do kinda like StarCraft II and make a series if connected games but each follow a different character like say this one be Human N7, next be Turian, next be Asari and then Salarian. Maybe through the games after the human one you're human character is kicked out of or leaves the millitary becoming a merc and have the final game in this hypothetical series be a human merc game. How does that sound? I like it, though I left out Krogan which is my number 2 choice(Turians are my #1) which I'd like to play as.

I agree. The turians and asari are really the only ones I see making it to the lineup. I honestly don't peg the salarians as having much of a chance, but anything's possible I guess. The rest will most likely be multiplayer puppets.

I'm on the fence as to what to make of the quarians, because aside from being able to share the same voice tracks as the turians, they're the only aliens that both look fairly human and have hair, lending them a lot of options in the CC, more so than the others.

Yeah. I can see it as maybe this:

Asari: Female only (all Female race)

Human: Male and Female available

Salarian: Male only (Females don't leave Sur'Kesh)

Turians: Male and Female available

That's a total of 6 body types and 4 backgrounds, less than DAI has so within their capabilities.

And if they want to equal the options DAI had:

Quarians: Male and Female available

For a total of 8 body types and 5 backgrounds.
