I am in full support of multi racial selection. The more the gameworld can be expanded upon the better.

Do you know what was great about ME other than good visuals and decent plot? Voice acting. It was absolutely great and added to the story immersion. And to tell you the truth, it takes a lot of effort to find proper and affordable (greed!) voices for leading/supporting characters. I understand people who want to have several races to choose from, but I'd prefer to have less races and more quality voice acting. Besides, more playable races means more audio files, which increases the size of the game itself - might be an issue for consoles.

One more thing: ME`s the high-quality space opera with pretty straight-forward plot rails. If Bioware will turn it into Skyrim in space - Ok. But other than that, I'd prefer it to stay close to its roots and provide epic adventures of one charismatic character, not a pack of faceless heroes with multiple endings. My 5 cents. B)

Exactly, being able to play as a separate race means loads and loads of money draining for the devs.

It's doable in a game like Dragon age where you don't have the main character speak, but since he does and the others around him interact so much with him, it would be a great burden.

Also Mass effect's plot overall is garbage.

Yeah, this is understandable - but for most races, voices effects (e.g. flanging for Turians) can be added to make alternate race audio. As for the issues with the game size, it's being rumoured that the game may not even release for last-gen (PS3 and Xbox 360), instead only releasing for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - I think I read somewhere than an industry insider claimed that the game was "too ambitious for last-gen".

Also, I'm heavily in support for customisable races! I would love to play as a Turian. :3

Your idea and mine are compatible.  I was thinking of allowing the player to pick which race they belong to.  Given where they're going with DA:I, I would think it's a safe bet that the level of customization will make it in the next ME game.

As far as the terminus systems go, I was thinking that the protagonist could be some hired hand.  A contractor.  You work for a company that provides transport and security to companies that send their scientists, engineers, etc. out to far reaches of the galaxy to mine, conduct research, explore for resources, yada yada yada.  All in the name of "technological advancement".  Maybe the goal is to take space travel to other galaxies.  Since the company who hired you isn't too big on following strict codes of ethics and thrives in ethically gray areas, they are headquartered in the Terminus Systems; outside of the Citadel Council or Alliance jurisdiction.

Your background as the ships captain can vary.  Yes, a captain! That way, it allows us to have a "Normandy" of our own.  Maybe we can outfit it with cool upgrades...I digress.  Much like you alluded to, your character is escaping something.  My thought was that you are:

1) Human - disgraced Alliance soldier; court marshalled. Your actions were necessary at the time, but violated military code.  It was either you and your squad dies or you commit this war crime.

2) Turian - disgraced C-Sec officer.  Your partner died under suspicious circumstances.

3) Krogan - disgraced clan member; exile or death for something you're accused of doing

4) Quarian - took the pilgrimage and never looked back.

5) Asari - Former Asari Commando; you're blamed for the death of the Matriarch you were protecting...falsely?

6) Batarian - You pissed off some slavers that you worked for.

The story evolves as you learn more about the people you're working for.  A few members of the team, who become your companions, have some misgivings about what's going on with the research and implore you for assistance in looking into it and getting off of the planet to inform either the council or the alliance.  While the council or alliance lack jurisdiction, the real plans of the company are a threat.  Maybe not a threat in the sense that the galaxy will be destroyed, that hand has been played.  It turns out, the company is just Cerberus in new clothes and they intend to overthrow the Citadel Council and install a new order that is, of course, human centric.

Given that your companions are from various races, this revelation can create some nice relationship dynamics.  If you're human, the non-humans will question your motives and wonder if you are too pro-human.  If you're non-human, this can create some tension between you and any humans in your group.

Just something to keep my mind busy while I wait for the next game...

Very nice. I enjoyed the read, and agree with you. Especially on the part where out character is avoiding the past.

Master Che's ideas about racial backstory sound brilliant. I hope Bioware goes ahead with something like this!

I wouldn't have a clue. It's something I would love to see, though. Hopefully BioWare gives us a massive E3 reveal and we find out some juicy details.

My hope is that there will be playable aliens with a few different backstories per race that affects the story here and there similar to Earth-born/Colonist/Spacer backstories in the current games. That might take some extra work, but would be totally awesome. Like some of the options could be Krogan Mercenary, Drell Assassin, Asari Justicar etc.

Having a system like Dragon Age: Origins might actually work.

I'd actually like ME4 to not include humans as a playable race - if anything to avoid "Commander Shepard 2.0". I want to play as a Turian personally, and I'd like to see just the alien races - preferably as a prequel before the First Contact War.

May we be spared such unspeakable horror.

I find the prospect of a sequel that would be very easy for Bioware to mess up an unspeakable horror.

Don't make me thing about that, BioWare messing up the next ME.

I'm.... scared now.

I pray for a playable Batarian. One of the few million survivors of Reaper Invasion.

Given that the mantra has been "go forward" and an emphasis on a "new region of space", a prequel sounds unlikely.

*Cough*  Dragon Age Inquisition, fully voiced protagonist with 4 possible voices (2 male, 2 female) and 4 possible races *Cough*

I think it is quite possible. They will be aware it is a very highly desired feature. I think it would be relatively easy to do for Human, Asari and Turian. With others it becomes a little more complicated because of their voices. Would people be ok with their Salarian, Krogan or Batarian sounding like a human? Can they do anything to modify the pitch of a voice programmatically to make it sound more realistic? So I think it is quite likely we get some choice, the only real thing stopping it completely would be a story reason, but it might not be as full a choice as some people want.

Salarians are probably the most human sounding of those three, but they tend to speak faster and at a higher pitch than other species.  Batarians are very deep and tend to have a slight distortion in their voice.  Krogan don't have as much distortion, but are also very deep.  Of the three, I'd most like to play a Krogan.

It really depends on how much they're willing to spend on voice acting for the protagonist (No small number even with the basic two!).  Asari and human females could share the same voice.  They could reuse the same recordings and add distortion for a turian, conceivably.  But anything else would probably require hiring additional actors or rerecordings if they wanted them to sound right.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much about multiple playing races. They'd have to voice all those different races and both male and female versions. Given the fact that having only humans was already a huge amount of voice acting, I don't see it happening.

Only humans works for me although I can see how it would be more interesting to have more options.

That's sort of what we've been talking about. Conceivably, Asari could share the human female voice actor (With some differing lines) and Turians may only require a filter of some kind to produce that slight distortion.
