What storyline do you think Bioware would use? First Contact War? The only way I would be welcoming of a prequel would the Alliance's war with the Batarians when humanity was rapidly expanding into Batarian zones. I am not supporting the idea of a prequel, but in general, I rather enjoy a storyline of the early war between the Alliance and Batarian. Possibly as a human officer (different to how Shepard's on-the-ground commanding style was) commanding a naval ship bigger than the Normandy waging war against pirates and Batarian armed forces. Or to give way to choice of multiple races, playing as a privateer, striking ships and base camps. Giving in to a more dark and seedy atmosphere.

Is my idea a horrible one?

The First Contact War wasn't with the Batarians. It was with the Turians. I don't think the conflict with the Batarians was ever considered a full-scale war.

Oh I know it was with the Turians. I meant to present the war with the Batarians as a different idea. There is a time when the Batarians had a skirmish with the Alliance, fighting over territory and thought it to be a semi-interesting story as I imagine it being more about the criminal underworld. I do not like the First Contact War being the setting of ME4.

It likely isn't.

However, TIME PERIODS that I'd love to visit, would be:

-First Contact War

-Rachni War

-Krogan Rebellions

-Unification War

-misc. smaller conflicts like what Asari and Batarians went through

-Prothian Cycle

-Leviathan Cycle

-address Thorian

-Earth as it came to learn of aliens and how humanity responded to them

-Rakhana's fall

-Maybe pre-Morning War Rannoch

Basically everything. lol. Except I don't really personally care for Tuchanka's history or any focus on Krogan. I mean, I could deal with it in ME3, but I just can't care about the Krogan very much. I honestly find species like Volus and Hanar more *potentially* interesting, even though the plot hasn't touched on them a lot.

Anyway, yeah, the FCW was:

1)With the Turians

2)Actually rather small for the Turians. It was large for Humanity because they've never faced a threat like the Turians before, so something could be done, but considering its relatively tiny scale, I wouldn't enjoy it except as a more flashback (through whatever means) section of another kind of game

3)The Asari/Council stepped in and basically held the Turians' hands back before they initiated the nuclear option to wreck Humanity easily

Interesting concepts they could play with. Lots of new and even important details we could learn (see: TIM's backstory). But a whole game? Eh... I'd rather not.

~~~
After the FCW, the primary threat to Humanity was the Batarians. But even then, it was a handful of conflicts and then just simmering tensions (giving Alliance a public reason to always keep their defenses up, regardless of co-operation with the Turians and Citadel Council). It's another case where a whole game just doesn't seem to make sense.
Keep in mind that by 'whole game', I mean a main franchise title for next-gen systems. If Bioware wants to release mobile/iOS games like ME:Infiltrator, or more sidelined DLC games, have at it! But the main franchise doesn't seem appropriate for, well, any of the recorded conflict periods.
What Bioware COULD do is have a side adventure happening, even more secretly than anything we've known of, that isn't related to the Shepard Trilogy events but will have effects on future games/plots down the line.
A very small example is some of DAII. In DA:O, you go to Lothering and then hear it was wrecked after a short while, but move on to the rest of your journey. But in DA2, you start off outside Lothering, which is being destroyed. The paths somewhat intersect, but the plots are largely unrelated.
Actually batarian cold war is one of my preferred ideas on prequel. Just main difference between your idea and my is, that I would prefer Corsair as main character. I see it interesting mainly from these reasons:
1) Own ship - Corsair would have his own unique ship with option of upgrades.
2) Colorful crew - to keep his incognito, Corsair would recruit from similar sources like Shepard in ME2 - mercenaries, veterans or smugglers
3) Morale grey - undercover secret agent would have authority for hard decisions
4) Change of tone - from heroic marine saving and shaping galaxy to secret agent operating in galaxy underground
+
5) Possible Shepard mini-cameo - during Skiylian blitz, investigation on Yakuze or when you were hunting your target during Torfan operation.
I'm not in favour of a prequel but I actually like this idea. Rather than Alliance, I think you should play as ex-military/ex-merc, out on the colonial frontier, when the Humans and Batarians clash (Skyllian Blitz?). You could discover some Batarian terrorist threat to human space or colonies and have to help defuse it.
It could have a good mix of politics, action and new locations. Not sure how you would have other playable races tho, unless you could also play a Batarian. Maybe you could also play as a council rep, sent out to seek peace between both sides, only to discover that the Batarians had resorted to dirty tactics.
All of this would be really interesting to visit, but maybe as DLC/expansion content. Not part of a main game. Personally I like the Krogan alot. I wouldnt want to play a Krogan as the main character, but I want them in the game. I am still a little peeved that we didn't get a Krogan squadmate in ME3. Could of just given us Grunt again lol.
The problem with all this prequel ideas is: they feel really small in scale compared to the Reaper threat
And "small scale" is a phrase that just does not exist in Bioware writers universe.
It should. Honestly I think it needs to exist for the sake of the MEU.
If ME4 is a prequel it would certainly not interest me. All those events do sound fun, but we are talking about the flagship game here, the new Mass Effect and not a spin-off. In my humble opinion, a new Mass Effect flagship game should never be a prequel, because all those events are either A. Not very long and dramatic events, gameplay can never be huge and dramatic when playing events like the First Contact War. B. The outcome is already clear which kinda spoils the story for me like the Prothean Cycle, and C. When doing things in other cycles they could just start a new IP, because the Mass Effect universe as we know it is non-existant in other cycles, so it should be a event from this one.
I do like to see a prequel though some time, but let another studio handle a prequel as some sort of Spin-off, and don't let prequels come in the way of sequel flagship games like the new Mass Effect is supposed to be.
I agree, prequel or side-quel is never a flagship title, only something to add on to the main games.
A prequel could be nice, though the supposed leaked info hints about new races,which they probably would not have come into contact with in a prequel. Unless of course you are part of a secret alliance mission to explore new uncharted areas of the galaxy via the new mass effect technology - its quite likely that the encounter with the turians was unlikely to be the only venture humanity took, and that was top secret at first when you read the books.
People say a sequel is unlikely because everything was destroyed..but that's not happened in any of my endings. Though the vast difference in choices at the end of ME3 would make doing a sequel to it very hard unless they decided on a canon and ignored the other options.
They could do a sequel so far ahead in the future that people have mostly forgotten the events of ME3.
I don't really care, as long as they do it right.
Or it could fit nicely anywhere between the first Mass Effect and third, as the general galaxy only believes that saren was operating alone with sovereign. Humanity is still expanding and exploring.
As interesting as the First Contact War is I don't think there is enough material there to build a solid ME game about, at least not one that Will satisfy ME fans desire to explore new worlds and interact with new and interesting characters. I think the Bioware are better off exploring the First Contact War in a novel.
In general I am very much opposed to the idea of a prequel, I think there is more to be gained from moving the ME timeline forward than going backwards since in a prequel you are restricted by what kind of story you can tell and how you can tell it. Having said that I think there is a lot more potential for a ME game centred around the Human/Batarian dispute over colonies in the Terminus system than there is a First Contact War game.
I don't think it will be for the following reasons:
  • It negates the whole idea of choice and consequences (yeah yeah, red, blue, green...just stop). We already know what happens.
  • It is right in line with the trilogy, which Bioware wants to move away from.
  • Knowing what we know now, anything going on in the story would pale in comparison to what's looming over the galaxy at this time.  It would feel so irrelevant.
I think it would be best to give glimpses of the past via unlocking some stuff and viewing some cinematic expository in the Citadel Archives.  That would be kinda cool! Collect artifacts or "stuff" and unlock something in the archives! Lore junkies like me would eat that up!
The First Contact War wasn't with the Batarians. It was with the Turians. I don't think the conflict with the Batarians was ever considered a full-scale war.
The Skyllian Blitz was actually more of a war than the First Contact War was. The Blitz lasted two years, whereas the First Contcact War was really not much more than a glorified border skirmish. I don't know if it is ever stated how long the FCW lasted, but it couldn't have been more than a couple weeks. The Council stepped in and resolved the situation diplomatically before the Turians could launch a full scale invasion of human space. IIIRC something like only 600 humans were killed compared to about 1,000 Turians.
If a game were set in the First Contact War the player character and his or her companions would be responsible for about half the total Turian casualties in the war.  :lol:
If ME4 is a prequel, they shouldn't call it "Mass Effect Next," they should be calling it "Mass Effect Last."
If they want to sell me a prequel, I want something almost completely unrelated to the known lore/canon and instead framework for as much originally as possible. By this I mean something like documenting humanity's earliest days exploring the galaxy, after Citadel contact, and playing as either a band of space pirates or explorers encountering many unknowns and mysteries in their own little corner of the galaxy. Enough to hold weight as a great story, but as few references and call backs to the Shepard trilogy as possible.
@Eatchildren A space pioneer story could be interesting, at least then it's not a story like the first contact where we already know the premise of that event, or the cheesy adventures of Garrus.
i think a prequel is a bad idea because we had a bad me3 ending. i wouldnt really care what happened to the protagonist if i know it doesnt mean anything in the end. if i had a time machine i never would have bought me1.
I'll hope that ME4 isn't going to be a prequel because I know what is going to happen in the future. However it could be interesting to have a story which could happen in parallel with Shepard's story. First you might not know that it's happening at the same time and then it's revealed to you. It could also have impact on ME3's ending. Maybe a new ending option or nothing that Shepard did had any meaning in the end because it was you all alone who did something and solved the whole situation.
