So, I'm on Korlus battling my way through hordes of Blue Suns mercs. I put Miranda in cover then advance towards the enemy. Unfortunately, I got too far ahead and next I know she is running past me into the middle of the fray only to get herself killed. Thanks, Miri. I was hoping to use your overload.

Would it be so hard to have the companion AI set up so they do not get closer to the enemy than the player unless ordered to do so?

That would be a good idea, unless the companion is a Krogan. A Krogan should probably have the occasional blood rage charge.

Ah, very true. I never issue orders to Wrex in ME3 (except an occasional call on his Carnage). I just let him run wild. Some of the most fun battles in the game. :)

The squad AI improves greatly each and every game. In ME2 they aren't so bad either except for their occasional tendency to charge enemy lines.

Have you met Liara S'Taloni? The blue adept who runs straight at the enemy in ME3 like she was Rambo? :)

Might be interesting to see if significantly different combat styles are implemented for each particular squadmate in the next game.

Probably a hell of a lot harder than it sounds. And of course, even if squadmates are equal in theory, it would likely mean some are a lot more helpful than others in practice. Raises lots of questions. Should someone like Kasumi even be equal in combat to someone like Garrus?

A good point. No, squishy specialists would not be equal to someone like Garrus. As much as I like characters like Kasumi and Tali, that's not their field of expertise. Legion I could buy in both a combat and tech role, but I always pictured those two in more of an "Anna Grimsdottir" support role (the latter was trained for combat, not sure why Kasumi would have been and don't think it was explained) - they have high-value skillsets; there are people better suited to kicking the door. Same goes for Liara. There are certain situations where their skills are useful in the field; trench warfare isn't one of them (as Tali puts it in the Rachni mission, "I'm sure I'll find plenty of computers to hack in the cave full of poison gas and monsters!").

I picture someone like Kasumi serving to retrieve the AML Demeter's location from the Eclipse base in Samara's recruitment mission without a shot fired, while Tali would be the one with the know-how to deactivate the plasma torches on X57 in Bring Down The Sky. I thought of a way that particular DLC could have been expanded; but that's for another time.

Some of this is already implemented in their Passives. Liara, for instance, is very, very squishy. Unless you manage her positioning she will go down fast. As long as you do manage her, though, she plays a very, very powerful support role. Wrex, OTOH, has passives that make him into a veritable tank. James has tank passives as well. Indeed, each squadmate has something different to offer in their passives that dictates (or should at least indicate) how they are best used.

I usually order her to safety. Have to protect my little blue asset.

One time on ME1 I had Tali go nuts on Noveria, charging straight at every geth (I was getting out of the Mako on the road to Peak 15 for max XP). Since I'd given her a good gun she was surprisingly effective, killing half of them before I'd got my sniper rifle lined up.
