Simple sociological exercise - List how mages and templars are dehumanized, stigmatized, etc. in Thedas and/or in forum debate. It can be read in any thread that mages have it good and templars are worthless, but are those things true? Let's find out. Maybe this will give perspective to some arguments, and help create threads more conducive to worthwhile, friendly debate.

"Mages are ticking time bombs." This objectifies a mage in denying all of their human qualities, leaving them a weapon of mass destruction to be feared.

 

"Templars are drug addicts." Implies that all templars are untrustworthy, have general bad character, cannot be effective guardians, and never will be, or possess any positive traits. Practically, everything the templar position requires, they don't have it. (Even though they take the substance to combat criminal magic. It doesn't matter.)

Mages: Kerras calls them 'robes' when discussing Meredith going over Elthina's head for the right of annulment, and exclaims he's happy that they'll finally get what's coming to them. The fact that he personified them as dispensable clothing is dehumanizing.

Templars: Seem to be almost entirely humans but I don't know maybe they might have mentioned some elf becoming one sometime but we never see 'em

The Right of Annulment. Mages are to be 'purged' regardless of individual condition. They're looked at as something to be 'culled' as if they weren't people.

 

Speaking of which. "Mages aren't like you and me", he then goes on to call them weapons.

They were all possessed by demons so the RoA was enacted on all cattle.

My list: Most of the depictions of Mages and Templars during DA2.  I know that sounds like I'm trying to cheat, but truthfully that game has been some of the worst dehumanization of both groups I've ever seen.

The Chantry's #1 tenet is "Magic is a corrupting influence in the world." Magic, even when used for good, is not to be celebrated, and thus mages cannot be appreciated for their work or beneficial roles in society.

Templars: Can be referred to peripherally as 'mundanes' or 'flintbangers',  or 'bucket heads' in forum debate.

Oh i thought of one, Ser Otto Alrik having an affair with a Tranquil female apparently indicates all Templars are Rapists who "geld" minds to do so.

 

Despite you know, All known cases by him have been either unknown or debatable and there was nothing to indicate he was raping any one.
