My favorite answer to any "Why x?" question is:
Because I have the resources, skills, and desire to do so.
aka Because I can.
Okay everyone, let's add more than just "I'll support this group because I like them."
Instead, let's add a challenge to it. What do you hope your Inquisition will gain out of supporting that group, and how will that strengthen your organization overall?

You don't have to help people in exchange for something out of it.
But let's see:
Elves) Make good scouts.
Dwarves) Access to resources beneath the ground.
Mages) Magic can seal the Veil Tears.

Dwarves?
I actually think all races are descendants of Human Progenitors but that's neither here nor there ![]()

it's true we don't have to, but if we're building the Inquisition, we will need to establish a source for supplies, make deals and alliances. Say we want to support mages, that's all well and good, but unless we can give them a source of lyrium, which means dealing with the dwarves or the Chantry in some fashion, the only other way to augment their powers or to do rituals is blood magic. Want to help mages for the sake of helping mages but want to avoid Orzammar and the chantry, you will essentially be helping create blood mages simply because of the lack of supply of lyrium.
Or if you wanted to help the elves gain a homeland, you would have a society where the inquisition could potentially have a lot of influence, but you would have to work out how to handle the locals if anyone lives in that area or if its owned by freeholders. Would you take it by force of arms and spend men fighting to defend it forever, likely with the elves help and a lot of recruits from the elves, or would you find ways to purchase the land and make it all legit, which in turn would probably set up trade agreements with the elves as a way to thank you for giving them land? That sort of thing.

Elves were here before humans according to the lore. ![]()
Elves were here before humans according to the lore.
And where did they come from?
And where did the Dwarves come from whom were here supposedly even before the elves if you look into their own lore?
We are digging so far back into the past, anythings possible ![]()
It just makes sense to me given most species have similar ancestors.
And where did they come from?
Humans apparently came from elsewhere (perhaps the same location the Qunari originated from), arriving on the island of Par Vollen.

Actually was inferring that question about the elves ![]()
But i am aware Humans are not native to Thedas, but i'd be surprised if any species currently dwelling within it were.

I know. I was just saying that for the people who will say help the City Elves or the Casteless Dwarves since helping them doesn't give you much when helping their oppressors will likely give you more.
Yeah, the mage one is an interesting issue. Chances are working with the Chantry would be easier than the Dwarves on that issue since the Chantry will want to help due to the Veil Tears, though if Orzammar is hit by one they may be suddenly very willing to help. There is also Kal-Sharok though so they may be an option. Can't say much on them though since we don't know much except from Codexes.
I like your ideas for the elves. That latter ones could be very interesting and possible if the Inquisition finds a large source of income to fund said projects or earns the goodwill of the nation the land is part of who would be willing to give it in exchange for the Inquisition's presence to aid it in these times.

Very Possible.
Or to be more meta, this guy:
amusing.
So back to the topic at hand. My answer? Dwarves. Always support the dwarves.
Probably all of them.
The one who pays the most? ![]()
Will depend on my Inquisitor =)
Due to the fact I can't seem to stop caring about the plight of both the mages and elves, during my first (possibly every) play through I will definitely help both groups to the best of my ability. After those I will support the dwarves, because they are excellent warriors and because they have a natural resistance to magic. I'm hoping that means they won't be as affected by the veil tears, magic-wise. Also, I really want Iron Bull on my side though...he looks like a bada**!
