Decided it was about time I checked out some of the dialogue options with Morinth that I knew would lead to failing the quest. What seems to happen is that if you pick options on the right side of the wheel, like "family" or "Justicars" then you would often be given a persuasion option to bail out of the failed line of questioning. The one option I know where I have been taking this route on a regular basis is when Morinth talks about dangerous places. Talking the lower right option has Shepard ask if this conversation is about power. Morinth responds "Of course it is." Shepard then has a charm option of saying that since she is in Morinth's booth talking, Shepard must be winning.

Anyway, my question is: is the dialogue set up so that you can bail on a "wrong" line of questioning if you pass a persuade check?

If I recall correctly the answer is sort of. If you ask the wrong line of questioning it will upset Morinth and cause her to leave, however, the persuasion options make her less upset, but they won't allow you to completely nullify choosing the wrong dialogue option -- they just simply mitigate it. If you do continue to question her about 'family' and 'justicars' she will leave and the mission will fail even if you do pass the persuasion options. For role playing purposes I'll sometimes ask her about one of those topics but charm my way out of it to talk about something she's interested in.

I also I always throw in the hipster Shepard line.
