That's right, folks! This is the appreciation and discussion thread for the Grey Warden Companion Blackwall - The Resolve. He is the most interesting man on Thedas, a man of many names, and the holder of one of the most glorious beards that people have ever laid eyes upon... or so the rumor goes.

I'm hoping for some kind of Warden infodump, certainly. The Wardens were actually more interesting in DA2 than DAO, but we didn't get enough information...

Ditto.

I'm very interested in what was hinted at in DA2 with the message from Avernus to Warden-Commander, hinting at some major revelation with the Grey Wardens. Really curious over what that will lead to, considering Cassandra seemed to attack a Warden fortress. Would it be possible that the wardens will have a change of heart concerning their role merely being that of stoping Blights, while some still cling to that ideology?

Would certainly make the Wardens even more interesting, considering Wardens are very boring and useless when there are no Blights, at least in my opinion.

I hope he's a companion. It's ironic that we don't know much about the Wardens despite playing as one in DA:O. Of course, it was an exceptional situation, and had Duncan lived he would have provided the necessary infodump.

There are so many points that can be played with that companion:

-What is the role of the Wardens in the Veil Tear crisis? They exist only to stop the Blights, but what happens if another end of the world is around the corner? Not a political crisis, but an honest End Of The World As We Know It. Shouldn't they help?

-Related to that, are they really neutral? Should they be? The Wardens who saved the world during the Blights (including our Warden) got their hands dirty in politics, if only to build massive alliances, but Alistair in DA2 (if he's a Warden) states that the rest of the Wardens didn't like it very much.

-The First Warden actually does politics, but the common Wardens aren't very imrpessed. The First Warden was the only who actually was delighted at the prospect of the Hero of Ferelden becoming Arl of Amaranthine. What if he/she tries to become King/Queen of the Anderfels?

-What did Avernus find out? Is it related to Coripheus being able to control Wardens and take over their bodies? What would happen if someone like Coripheus took control of the First Warden?

Questions, questions, and only that character could provide the answers we seek in Inquisition. If not, we would have to wait for the next game in the series portraying a Warden protagonist.

That picture with him walking away from the gallows is intriguing. What was his situation? A convicted saved in the last minute? An executioner sick and tired of his job?

His beard in the gameplay footage appears closer to the first concept art. I hope that it ends up closer to the second. I prefer the slight fork and the gray patches.

If you look at the concept art, there are two guards (wearing Orlesian-looking helmets) that are slumped over. Looks like the Warden beat them senseless, possibly bare-handed, before freeing the guy about to be hanged.

And yes, he's ripping off an amulet that looks like a griffin. So maybe he's left the order. I really hope this guy is a companion and things are looking good that he will be

My interpretation is that he was on the gallows too, and escaped. It's hard to say if the concept art represents a scene from the game, a scene for his back story, or just an expose' on his personality.

Far right, look at him so happy. I hope we do get scenes like this in-game

By the way, this is by far my favorite concept art

My guess is that this is a little window into an event from his past.

I wonder if this is Grigor/Gregor, the Grey Warden Allistair mentions (great beard, can drink an entire room of grey wardens under the table)?

If he's a romance option, the Inquisitor will be able to kiss and floss at the same time. Convenient!

He is dressed in rags similar to the other condemned so, chances are he was about to be executed.

The two unconscious guards suggested he pummeled them with his bare hands. However, the rope of his companion in the gallows appears to have been cut with a sword and beardie isn't holding one. Of course, he could have just thrown it away.

On the other hand, one can clearly see that there are other masked guards in the crowd but they, strangely, don't appear to be making any moves to stop him. It could be they are afraid to approach him but then one has to wonder why would Beardie cut Baldie free but then abandon him in the middle of orlesian guards who can easily hang him once Beardie is gone.

One thing is clear, he is ripping the Grey Warden symbol in disgust.

It could be that Beardie stands in opposition to the First Warden's politicking.

Or maybe he tried to convince the Wardens they should protect the people from this demonic invasion and they cited "neutrality" at him which leads him to join the Inquisition.

Or maybe the Wardens abandoned him to be hanged.

His first concept-art reminds me of Eddard Stark.

Now we need Tywin Lannister to compensate.

I've been of the same mind that this art shows that he is somewhat disgusted at the current situation with the Wardens. I'm starting to wonder if the Warden command doesn't want to get involved in the veil-tear situation and Beard guy disagrees.

My guess is that in the second picture he's just broken some kind of warden oath by saving that bald guy next to him. You can see that the rope meant to hang the bald guy has been cut although admittedly you'd think he'd look a bit happier if his life had just been saved.

Commander Feathers is surely going to be one of the most interesting characters. Its a perspective we have yet to see. A Warden with enough knowledge of the organization to have distain for them.

Or at least, that's what I hope for him.

That the Wardens abandoned him to be hanged sounds plausible. Explains why he was about to be executed (I don't think the Wardens would have allowed that easily), as well as his evident disgust at the Warden symbol. If it's because he opposed the First Warden getting into politics or because he campaigned in favour of fighting against the Veil Tears, or for any other reason, who knows.

Now that I take that into account, What if it's not a past event and it's a scene we'll see in Inquisition? For example, let's say there's a problem involving Wardens in one of the main quests. Since the Wardens stubbornly refuse to help the Inquisitor, our character is at a dead-end. But then someone tells the Inquisitor the story of a rebellious Warden who is going to be executed by the Orlesians (or whoever those soldiers are). Cue our party running to the gallows to stop it before it's too late and get his support and his vital information.

Ooh, that's an interesting thought! Especially since I've been wondering who's holding that sword in the concept art:

Edit: by the way, is it just me, or does it look like someone took a bite out of that sword? Maybe they needed more iron in their diet, har har har...okay, I'll shut up now.

I believe the warden stuck the sword in the edge of the platform after saving the other criminal about to be hanged.
