This is a bit of a misconception. There is at least one character who is not a companion or an advisor whom you can flirt with. When Cameron said that there were eight romances, he was referring to eight romances within the companions and advisors.

Chee-brand romance, we must have it. With that clarification, my optimism levels are at a level 2 (and for me that is high when it comes to these things, as I do my best to manage expectations).

And it's bugging me that people think Blackwall is too tragic to be a LI. Taint isn't an illness, but I find it well life-affirming that you can find happiness even with that hanging over your head. My disability isn't fatal, but I'm starting to have complications. So romance amid pain like that makes me oddly happy.

Tragedy and romance play hand in hand. Without some strong emotion to connect you to the character the romance feels fake, So in a way, the way to make a good romance is to have a element of tragedy.

They just don't play enough BioWare games... tragedy is how romance is born here.

I like some strife, bitterness, and occasional tragedy (I'm a Fenris fan, after all), but ultimately I like a happy ending... I'll settle for bittersweet.
If Blackwall is a romance, I think his Calling would be "there" looming in the background, and that would make the story more intense and meaningful (for lack of a better word) BUT I'd still like the game to end with him not having yet felt the need to go into the Deep Roads.
I mean gee give them a few years of happiness at least

No I was referring to Mass Effect. Some guys were romancing Ashley for that very reason.
Well, Blackwall going into the Deep Roads 5 minutes after we met him would be a waste.
