I believe the warden stuck the sword in the edge of the platform after saving the other criminal about to be hanged.
Ah, you're right! That explains a lot, haha. Then I guess it is most likely a scene from his back story...?

Well, I can already guarantee that, if he is a companion, he's going to be in my party all the time. I friggin' love the idea of the Grey Wardens and the idea that they are some extreme fighting force without borders, harboring tons of dark secrets. Buhh. Gives me a lore-boner.
In addition, take a look at these possible armor combinations!

At one of the PAX Prime Bioware Panels, they mention that every companion has their own "flavor". You can put any armor on your companions, but they all "make it their own" and they have their own style. It looks like this guy's style is Grey Warden heraldry.
Excited to see more of this guy. I've always been highly fascinated in the Grey Wardens and I'm definitely interested to see what this guys deal is. I'm sure he'll be in the party quite often.
Ooh, that's an interesting thought! Especially since I've been wondering who's holding that sword in the concept art:
The Inquisitor, maybe?
Edit: by the way, is it just me, or does it look like someone took a bite out of that sword? Maybe they needed more iron in their diet, har har har...okay, I'll shut up now.
That sword definitely belongs (or belonged, from the looks of it
) to the Warden. Here's a replica Grey Warden sword, the details are the same.

Edit: Also, if he is a companion I foresee falling madly in love with him, whether or not he is an LI. Even ignoring his fantastic appearance, he has the potential to be incredibly interesting, deep, endearing, intriguing etc etc. Mmm.

Ah, there goes my theory. Still wondering why the other soldiers don't do anything or why he's leaving after cutting the rope instead of, you know, freeing his fellow prisoner.

Doesn't that last sword look similar to the one in the gallows scene?

Yeah, here the full length of the GW sword replica.

Nice sword. Is it from the games or from another source?
This guy is definitely doing it for me. I love the idea that he is a disgraced or former Warden, although that is just speculation. Based on what we've seen in the concept art:
1.) He appears to be a "make the tough decisions" kind of guy, if he decides to beat up a pair of guards and save a man from execution. Most interestingly to me, he seems like it was a tough decision for him. He is looking grim and tearing off his Warden amulet (is that his Warden's Oath?). Plus, he's not taking the prisoner with him and he left his sword behind. Seems like the DA version of dropping the mic and walking away.
2.) He has a great sense of humor. He, "Sera", and the Inquisitor are all laughing away in the pub, while stick-in-the-mud Cass just glares. Plus, we know he likes beer.
3.) He is super smexy and hairy and broad shouldered.
All signs point to a good likelihood that this guy is going to be one of my favorite characters in the game.
He's a weirdo with a beardo ![]()

Beards are in now. Get with the times, man.

._.
I haven't cared about what was "in" since Neon went out ._.
Just saying.
People shouldn't be judged for having or lacking facial hair. Luckily, there are plenty of people who enjoy the different options. It would/will be nice to finally have a non-Oghren companion with a beard. It's about time! We're getting ethnic diversity, baldness and a beard... I love the way companions are shaping up so far. Hooray for companion diversity!
Small personal note: those of us whose husbands have to shave regularly for work need to get their scruffy fix somewhere.
Yeah, I like that so far we have:
a black woman - haven't had one in a Bioware game since Dynaheir in BG1
a blonde female companion - haven't had one in a Bioware game since Velanna in DA: O
a non-dwarf bearded man - first in a DA game (Anders scruff doesn't count as a beard, imo)
another tough female warrior - after the Aveline love, this is nice
a bald companion - first in a DA game
a sexy hairy dwarf - oh, that's right, we've had him in our party already......
I had actualy failed to notice the sword.
It's obviously a Grey Warden blade and it's also obviously stuck to the platform. However, this brings into question the speculation that he was about to be hanged. Why would the guards bring his sword to his execution.
The fact that he leaves it behind does give strenght to the idea of him wanting to rid himself of everything related to the Wardens. Which is strange considering how the concept of his possible armors are all very "Grey Warden-y"
What if, with the Wardens taking more political power, he was called upon to execute someone and he objected? The politicizing of the Wardens could have disillusioned him, especially when it appears they are no longer protecting the people.
This is just speculation, of course.

Maybe he had outside accomplices that brought him his weapon. For some reason I keep imagining this as the high fantasy version of Luke Skywalker at the Sarlacc Pit.
Is there going to be a fifteen minute long nodding scene?
I love the family guy parody of that ![]()
Every one is just nodding at each other.

That would explain much, in fact.
He looks epic and badass. That's all that matters at this point ![]()
Looks like a great material for a companion

For those curious.
I'm super excited about this guy. A potentially mature romance option. Possibly a rebel Warden, turned his back on them for philosophical/moral/who knows? reasons. Your rock of the group. Gives sage advice. But perhaps is more than he appears. Did he do something horrible (a la Sten)? Why has he left the Wardens (assuming he did)? OR is he perhaps serving as their representative, to assist us in our inquisit...ing... duties.
Yep, I'm stoked about this guy ![]()

I found it on the Epic Weapons website! Ugh, their stuff is amazing.
That's an odd scene. So the Grey Warden cut the rope, but didn't freed the bald guy (which looks rather unhappy, guilty, ashamed). Then he stuck his sword in the platform, stripped his armor and griffon amulet, pummeling some guards in the process (and other Orlesians just stay here?) I'm somehow reminded of sir Barristan Selmy resignation. Looks interesting.
Actually, it seems like someone freed the bald guy. The noose around his neck has been cut.
