So, question for y'all. What attracted you (in a romantic or non-romantic way) to the character of Blackwall, based on what's been said so far? Just curious to hear all your thoughts.
TBH, it's sort of a mystery. The short version is that one of my planned Inquisitors told me he's totally her type. It was a surprise.
The longer version:
Blackwall wasn't on my radar. Neither as a particularly interesting companion - I'm not usually interested in warrior types - nor as an LI where I looked for someone more...well...brainy. When Dorian was announced as gay, that was disappointing.
Enter...
...Maelyn Trevelyan, a so far mostly content resident of Ostwick's Mage Circle. Aged 28, the library researcher type. Smallish in stature, with bright green eyes and a thick black braid, neither shy nor inexperienced but reserved and romantically disinclined, the type who, apart from her research, only notices she's always wanted something when an opportunity to get it presents itself. That applies to more freedom for mages...and to romance.
There are rumors about her. For instance, that she "accidentally" turned a templar into a toad who was spying on her through a secret peephole. That rumor happens to be true. There are few secrets in Ostwick's Circle. The mages know about the peepholes and the templars know about the secret weapons training classes given by the Libertarians, but everyone keeps up the pretense because that keeps tensions low. Maelyn has taken part in these classes not because of a particular passion for freedom, but because she liked the physical exercise.
Her true passion is magic. And magical knowledge. What she hates most is forbidden knowledge, or more precisely, that anyone would presume to forbid knowlege. She doesn't really mind the templars' stated mission - after all she'd rather be dead than possessed, so in a way their presence is reassuring - but they shouldn't interfere with what isn't their concern. She spent years hunting down obscure references and theories, and the rules are really beginning to chafe when the impossible happens: the Annullment at Kirkwall triggers an uprising of mages all over Thedas, and all hell breaks loose. Ostwick's Circle is in a state of siege when to her utter surprise, Maelyn is selected as a delegate for a peace conference. She has zero experience as a diplomat, she isn't a people person. She got the job, they tell her, because she keeps her passions in check and is slow to judge, and apparently she's got a reputation for being able to "cut through the crap of others' rhetoric" without offending anyone. Much.
I had Maelyn well-developed along these lines when the last LIs were announced. And I found that...Blackwall was actually a fitting option. Thinking more about it, he was the only option. Maelyn would like someone with a physical presence, and someone who tends to do things more deliberately and well-considered, but still with dedication. An older man, very likely. That he's dedicated to a cause bigger than himself is admirable, though she doesn't know a great deal about the Wardens except stories and reports whose truth was impossible to gauge from her isolated place. Cullen? No way. He's the type swooned over by the girls she despised as a teenager. Iron Bull? Ugh [comment redacted]. Solas would fit her ideologically, but she's not an elf and anyway he's physically not her type.
So that's how my first (and probaly "main") Inquisitor told me she's interested in Blackwall. My own interest in him, more or less, tagged along. And now we're both here. (And just now she's telling me she wants to be a Knight Enchanter. That was not in the plans, damn it..
