Blackwall may have been a warden-constable during the blight, but he hadn't necessarily been a grey warden that long. How long would it take someone to be moved up to a command position if they entered the Wardens with considerable military command experience? How long would it take for someone with Loghain's abilities and experience to have that ability put to use (assuming he didn't have Loghain's problematic background)? Admittedly, it's likely Blackwall had been a warden for a few years during DAO, but he didn't necessarily become one when he was 20. We know Loghain was able to survive the joining and he had a daughter who was around 30.

Well, all it took for our Warden to be made Commander was stop a Blight. :S

I imagine if any Warden is impressive they climb the ranks fast. Duncan got made Constable pretty quick.

That brings the question: is the beard a requirement for the Constable rank, or just a consequence?

 

Maybe that's why a female Warden got straight to Commander. The beard is optional for those.

First Warden: (gapes in shock, taking a step back) My Lady?! But you-- on your-- (gestures tentatively at his chin) that's to say... err.. (with some distress) you have a beard.

 

New Warden-Commander: (nods with a superior look, puffing up a little) Little something I picked up from one of the girls - hails from a place called "Middle Earth" - it's the height of fashion there. Glorious, isn't it! (continues to stroke the beard lovingly)

 

First Warden: (scratches his head) If you say so, My Lord--err --Lady.

Gotta agree, I absolutely love this so far  - beautiful line work, and I just love the blush and look that says she caught him totally unawares with the kiss.

 

I think I remember at PAX someone describing Blackwall as the "strong, silent type" (followed by the talk about how he likes walks in the rain) and so I paired him with my Trevelyan who is a little less silent about what she wants.

 

Also, don't let his name be Walter... that's my dad's name.
