Maybe. I mean, we've had a lot of widows, but I don't think we've had any former fathers on the tragic backstories scale.
I can see that being a reason for him willingly joining the Wardens. Or, for something different, maybe they died while he was a Warden, which was the cause of his supposed estrangement with the order and time spent 'alone on the road,' as while he was duty bound he felt like he was doing it for the family beforehand.
Either way, I expect feels.

Yes, that's a resemblance that's been noted a few times, especially since I think there have been comments from the devs that said more or less "if you were disappointed in not getting to spend more time with Duncan..."
