Perhaps avoiding spoilers because they seem to be very carefully not telling us much about him. I've begun to think that who he is exactly will be some sort of surprise in itself.

Agree with Tishina, although I am beginning to suspect that his role in the overall storyline may be more pivotal then we imagine too (perhaps an Anders, of sorts). The devs are clearly holding their cards close to their chest when it comes to Blackwall, and to me that hints at the fact that there may not be much to show of Blackwall without giving away some big secret of his. I mean surely if it were otherwise they would have been a little more forthcoming with footage, etc?
But hey, I could be completely wrong.

Blackwall will be playing a big role in Grey Warden's subplot. The question is how big is this subplot.
Also Sheryl Chee said she hates spoilers. And despite I'm sometimes a little jealous when say, Patrick Weekes chats happily about his characters, I understand her opinion about this.
Or alternatively Blackwall is so awful they don't want to mention him. Which I doubt.
Both Leliana and Isabela were quite different from what was expected. I imagine if Sheryl said before DAO: "Oh, btw, Leliana is an Orlesian spy and sings like an angel" that would weakened the impression in game.

I think it'll be a lot of fun to uncover what's being hidden about him (pretty much everything), but please, not an Anders-revolution-starting-mass-killing plot! I don't mind if Blackwall is rather grey, lots of life is really greyer than people like to think, but that's past grey for me.

I've a pretty good idea why they;re being closed mouthed and it's a good reason (I have the art book). But still there has to be a seen of him talking about non-spoilery things. I just want a sense of his personality and normal speaking voice. You know, so I know whether to run male or female first. I'm half in love with Cass after yesterday.
I planned my qunari warrior singing serenades to Cassandra long before Blackwall was declared LI. (Yesterday's video was just icing on the cake. Miranda is awesome). I guess that it's easier for me to decide then. In addition, the first playthrough will give me an opportunity to identify when Blackwall will be available for the party so I didn't miss any content with him.

I...might do the same actually. I have a long-standing MShep that I've translated to other games and he'd adore Cass, Josephine and Dorian for different reasons. And I know his habits pretty well. I can always restart if I just can't wait for Blackwall, right?I planned my qunari warrior singing serenades to Cassandra long before Blackwall was declared LI. Right.
Something tells me Cass is totally worth it though. I can't say the same about other followers yet.

I'd enjoy for him to be current grey, just not like Anders and Fenris where all they did was go on and on and onnn about their hangups, that would suck. It always made me feel like Hawke was more about being their shoulder to cry on or personal psychiatrist rather then their love interest (and honestly, neither of them were truly fit to be in a relationship considering their mental state). So no, I definitely do NOT want Blackwall to be like that, and I think we have little fear of that ever happening, thank god.
No, when it comes to being 'grey', I like a bit of sadness and doubt despite the strong and resolute nature. Not so that it colors his daily life, but so that it adds depth and realism to his character. Characters that are written as resolute and strong with no weaknesses whatsoever are boring and one-dimensional.

Agreed. Anders was far too troubled by Justice/Vengeance to be a real partner, and Fenris needed someone with a lot more patience and help healing than any character I'd be willing to play would have. Oddly, Isabela was the only one in DA2 I thought had the potential for a strong relationship as long as you accepted who she was and let her decide what she was ready for; once she finally trusted you (and herself), I think she'd be an exceptional partner, in every sense of the word. Though never a predictable or boring one...

I don't think we have to worry too much about BW producing characters without weaknesses or vulnerabilities or a bit of pain in their backgrounds. It's how they deal with it that's fun (as long as it hasn't crippled them).

I do hope I'm not going to have to be his therapist. I'm tired of melodrama. But Isabela and Leliana are probably the most stable LIs in their games, so I'm not too worried.
I most devoutly hope none of the companions/advisers need the inquisitor to be accepting of their mental health issues. I'm really full up on angst after the last game. I'll agree with you on Isabela, but I do have to beg to differ about Leliana. My opinion of her is about as negative as it gets. Give me Anders any day. At least he didn't try to pull the wool over his own eyes about his insanity.

I feel like the companions have taken turns in the spotlight. Maybe that's why sometimes one of them or another feels like they're being forgotten? I feel like we don't really know a lot about any of them. Like just the least they can get by with telling us about them. I like it ![]()

Who knows? He could show up in the next stream? I just want to get a sense of his personality and whether I'll find him attractive in game. It's hard to get hyped over a cypher.
Yes! Superficially, he's the LI I'm most attracted to, but we have one line of dialogue in gameplay and a vague description of who he is. It's hard to feel certain based on "Forget them, head for the castle!" and a few snippets about what he may like (some of which may have been tongue-in-cheek). Though the fact he's on team vulgar is a plus in his favor for me... ![]()

I can see how he'd be a support figure for someone like a mage who had to put up with templar b******t and power abuse in the circle, let's say. In a way I imagine him to be very protective of the inquisitor.

I'm curious about his background. Is he from Ferelden or Orlais or somewhere else entirely I wonder.

I believe he's from the Marches. He definitely ain't from Ferelden seeing as he's been a warden for a long time and was not killed at Ostagar. Plus he was about let Ferelden take the blight on by itself because of Loghain's BS.

He might be of Fereldan origin but was transferred to Orlais.

Exactly, he could be from anywhere. I've kind of leaned toward the Free Marches or the Anderfels, but it occurs to me that he's got a bit of the same look as Cassandra, so maybe Navarre?
