I'm conflicted about the romance. I don't know. I'm all about redemption stories but his story is heavy. I'm doing both his romance and Cullen's on different playthroughs because I'm not patient. So far I like both but Blackwall makes you hurt. LOL

So Blackwall seduced me into romancing him and I loved it all the way. The only part that bothered me is

the scene where you judge him. He asks if you'll still want to be in a relationship with him and if you say yes, he kisses you in front of everyone! I love you BW but dang that's super disrespectful. I'm surprised the Orlesians that were there didn't gasp with surprise. Save it for later!  I kinda felt I was totally abusing my power as well.

 

The rest was absolutely great. What a ride.

Hey, I have a question

 

Blackwall disappeared on me. He called me over for a drink, then he talked to me about a dog, then the scene cut to black and I could no longer pick him to the party and he's not at the stables.

 

How did I lose him? I brought him with me to collect Grey Warden artifacts and recruited the Wardens to my cause, why did he leave?

I'm torm between romancing Blackwall or Cullen!!! I keep changing my mind. I've just got Blackwall to join me (also Iron Bull) but can't find either of them in Haven....can someone tell me where they are?

Cullen's romance is very much like Garrus or Al without the DR/king stuff. He's very sweet in a "my perfect first boyfriend" way. I'm not enjoying it--my teeth ache--but many people do.

I will likely end up doing both but which one is better for my first play through.....does one have more substamce to it? Sweet is fine but the second time I romanced Al in DA I found him a bit to needy....only did it again because my elf couldn't be queen...pissed me off!

In regard to romance for my femqunari - I was thinking, yeah Iron Bull and a femqunari, but bloody hell, Blackwall, gah... I think I might get sucked in to the romance before I was quite ready to create a PC for him.  Every conversation with him hits all the right romance checkpoints for me.

I greatly enjoyed this romance. At first I had no plans to romance him, really, because my eye was on Cullen (for whom I downloaded mods for the first game just to get him to romance me) and then Iron Bull (especially after the romance scene Kotaku posted that had me laughing). I just flirted with him like I did with all other male companions. It wasn't until he showed that he was respectful to my character (in a gentlemanly way- saying my lady and not being all oggly eyed perfect dream boy like Cullen) that I decided to try out his romance. And I am happy that I did.

I enjoyed doing all the Warden quests for his approval simply because I like the Grey Wardens- you play DAO enough and youre bound to like em.

But once the quest for the badge happened, i automatically suspected something was up. Same with the calling..

Regardless, it was tough dealing with what he did, but, I gave him freedom and continued the romance. He shows enough guilt and remorse for his actions- something I see as worthy enough for a second chance.

I liked this romance because it felt like real love to me. A true romance is one of friendship where you can discuss things with each other and have comfort as well as all the extra benefits. The romance caused him to face his fears and overcome them. It reminded me of my husband and I- especially because my husband overcame his fears for the sake of our relationship. It especially made me laugh when I bought up the future of the relationship and he mentions a house and a dog and eggs- the same aspirations my husband had when we started dating.

I hope there is a lot more juicy bits to come. By far my favoritest love interest- different than the first two games' worth.

I liked it a lot. But I'm a sucker for drama. There's some "I'm not worthy, I will be bad for you" early on but it gets better after the reveal. There are so many possibilities to the romance as well, like does she accept him back? Does she send him to the wardens or give him his freedom? And he's just such a gentleman! But in the end it's all about preferences. If you want a complicated romance without the inevitable heartbreak of a Solasmance, Blackwall's your guy. If you want a more straight forward and innocent romance, you might want to look elsewhere.

It's a bittersweet, complicated romance, but I have found it rewarding as well - especially if you're on one of those people (and that would be me) who believes that there is room for redemption even after heavy things have happened. I finally officially got around to the revelations last night and came to a decision about it.

My decision to continue the romance was based on several things - all of which are spoilers, so totally do not click on my spoiler tag unless you're prepared for really major quest spoilers - like, really, don't read this until you've done most of the major quests...or else. It also seems to have gone on way longer than I originally intended - oh well...prepare for lengthy reading if you click.

MASSIVELY SPOILERIFIC, GIGANTIC ESSAY ON THE BLACKWALL ROMANCE BELOW!!!! STOP NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN TO REDCLIFFE, SERIOUSLY!


I pretty consistently showed mercy, even to Alexius who, you know, tries to kill the Inquisitor. Why? Because Dorian told me about the man that Alexius used to be - he was a good man at one time - and about what had happened to his family. Alexius did a terrible thing, but it was in no small part due to Alexius blaming himself for not being there to protect his wife and son, which led him to take desperate measures to save Felix. Partially for Dorian's sake and for the friendship they'd had, partially because he was a good man once, and partially because I pitied him, I showed mercy and put him to work for the Inquisition.

Similarly, when the truth about how the Wardens had been deceived came to light - even after I knew the truth about what happened at the Conclave - I gave the Order the chance to redeem itself. The Wardens were, for all their flaws and blind spots, trying to do the right thing. And let's face it, they were responsible for saving the world multiple times. Though they made a pretty spectacular blunder (that may be an understatement, heh), I think their past acts of bravery were enough to warrant a second chance for them to set things right.

Which brings us to Blackwall and the truth about who he is and what he did. Thom Rainier deceived his men into killing a nobleman for gold, believing that his employer was in a position to gain some level of political influence/power - but that's the way the Game is played in Orlais, it's a bit cutthroat, a bit Darwinian, and very, very deadly. It would have largely been business as usual, but for the fact that Rainier made a mistake in believing that the nobleman would be alone with bodyguards at most - resulting in the unintentional slaughter of the nobleman and his entire family, including all the children.

Now that is bad, really bad, but if you care about someone, it's a litttle difficult to just toss everything you had/have out the window. Furthermore, after the heart-to-heart at the prison, I believe that Rainier showed genuine remorse, guilt, and sorrow over everything that he'd done. And ultimately, he left in the way that he did to spare the Inquisitor the pain of finding out the truth (he says something to that effect). In its own way, it was a romantic gesture to try to protect the person he loved - maybe a stupid thing to do, but still.

I also feel that it showed that the Inquisitor had changed him on a certain level, and that he really wanted to be the kind of man that she believed him to be. In the end - for whatever reason - he was brave when it mattered most as he stood up to declare his true identity and saved one of his ex-soldiers before he could be executed for Rainier's crime. It takes a certain level of guts to do that and to accept the punishment that he must have known was in store. He had no reason to think that he was going to get anything but a death sentence at that point, and he still tried to push the Inquisitor away in an effort to protect her and her reputation (in my opinion).

Additionally, despite his masquerade as a Warden, he really did do a lot of good along the way (like how he temporarily conscripted those fishermen/villagers and taught them to fight for themselves). And per some of the dialogue in the game, my Inquisitor pointed out that perhaps he reminded the Wardens of what they once were and could be again. Despite his being a sham, maybe he embodied some of their ideals. He idealized them so much and so strongly believed in them as heroes that it was kind of sad and poignant. I also believed him when he said that he had every intention of joining the Wardens for real until the real Blackwall died while trying to save him from the darkspawn.

It was all pretty heartrending, especially when he told the Inquistor that he planned on telling her the truth when they had gone to the Storm Coast but that he had lost his nerve. But I suppose it worked out in the end. Sometimes good people do bad things and make stupid decisions that go tragically wrong or they get twisted up like Alexius and the Wardens because of guilt or fear. That's why I felt justification - based on my previous acts of mercy and compassion - that Blackwall/Rainier deserved his own chance at redemption despite his crimes,

And yes, by that point he sort of had my Inquisitor's heart, so killing him was totally out of the question. I could have sent him to Wardens, but partially due to selfishness, partially because of what he said about not even knowing who he was anymore, I decided that - like the Inquisitor suggests in the dialogue - he really did need to face up to who he was and what he did, and that he had to learn to live with it as himself. Whatever man Rainier/Blackwall is now, he's really not the same person that he was all those years ago.

Finally, my Hawke's relationship with Anders mirrored what was happening with the Inquisitor and Blackwall on a certain level. My Hawke stayed with Anders despite everything (pleased to see that acknowkedged in DA:I when I chatted with her and asked about their relationship, although it was a little weird to have a conversation with your own character). It's clear that my Hawke didn't feel that what Anders did was a-okay and that it's not at all easy to move past what he did, but they are still together and she's still protecting him. It also seems like she still loves him (which sort of mirrors how I felt about the whole Anders thing after DA2).

If Hawke could manage to stay with Anders after the events of DA2, then I think it's entirely possible to give Rainier/Blackwall a second chance, especially when he seems to have already been trying pretty hard to make up for his past actions once he had assumed Blackwall's identity. And really - to end this on a lighter note - my Inquisitor probably would've missed kissing Blackwall near the stables, heh.

So if I choose not to go for the items in the Fallow Mire (well, one anyway. I think I got the other) since I don't have the required perk, can I get it later? Or will the quest go "lol nope" as soon as I hit Skyhold?

You must mean the item behind that locked door in the area where the missing soldiers are. I couldn't get that artifact the first tme I went to the Fallow Mire, but I just upped my lockpicking skills with the perk later on and got it when I could. You don't need to finish it right away. If there's actually a key somewhere in that area, I certainly wasn't able to find it, so I had to wait a while.

Bit of a pain getting the last artifact in the Westen Approach (believe that was the name - big desert, lots of annoying phoenixes, etc). I had to locate an op somewhere within there that let me unlock the area where that last artifact was located. Anyway, you should be fine! Don't worry imo, although I would get that lockpicking perk ASAP because it's useful outside of this quest.
