For those who have played it, what is the romance like? I've narrowed it down to four for the next game. Blackwall's personal quest is one of the highlights of my game, but I'm not sure that translates into him being a good romance. The leaving doesn't really bother me, and I'm looking for a bit more substance.

 

And please tell me I wasn't the only one who had "Who Am I?" from Les Mis in my head during said quest.

Ok good. I like redemption stories. Went back and read a couple of pages.......sounds like I picked a good one for the first horse our of the gate.

So, I haven't got his personal quest and I wonder if that's normal, or if something's wrong. And I thought Viv's would be the one I'd never see this playthrough...

I've done both the Grey Warden critical path quest and the Orlesian Civil War one. No new dialogue with him. I think he likes my Inquisitor, or what we're doing, anyway. I can still complete his affection fetch quest, but if I don't have to yet, I'd rather not. One thing is, I exiled the Grey Wardens - does that lock you out of his quest? That seems possible, I guess. Would suck if it's the case. Or do I have to do another critical path quest?

How much have you done in the main story quest? I didn't get his personal quests until after the val royeaux ball.

Finally finished the last two missions and the game, and I will just repeat what I said when I was updating a post in another thread - Blackwall melted my cold, dead heart completely with his dialogue in the

and the other lines that he had in the remaining cutscenes and dialogue.

 

I may not be able to romance another guy in DA:I on future playthroughs after this, and I really had plans to try all of them out (found all the guys interesting, actually - even Solas). Sort of hoping that I can break the Blackwall habit long enough for Cullen, but I'm starting to think this is going to be a repeat of DA:O where I couldn't motivate myself into choosing anyone else besides Alistair once I'd committed to him the first time around.

I've been playing for quite a while, not romancing, but enjoying Blackwall's character - a strong and silent type who obviously's done some bad things in the past, but is now trying his best to help, and I was grateful for that.

 

But. 

 

Then.

 

I had a puppy banter. It was horrible. It was really, really horrible as I had no warning whatsoever. If I knew I'd be forced to view such content (cruelty to animals, death of animals, rather clearly described in detail), I'm not sure I'd have recruited him at all.

 

Seriously, this is a computer game. We expect murder, we expect rape references, we expect pretty dark stuff, including sacrificing of babies. But human psyche of this day and age involves certain triggers that are just two strong - torturing of helpless animals among them.

 

I'm not pro-censorship. By all means, if the writer was inclined to write this down, let him, it's his right. But he COULD have warned us ingame. I.e. "I'm going to tell you a pretty gritty and dark story, and it concerns a puppy and a few cruel kids, and I'm not sure you'd like to hear it". - "You're completely write, Blackwall, I'm sorry, but I can't deal with it." Blackwall disapproves. That's it!

 

Instead, I just got it dumped on me. I had a dog. It died. It was horrible. 

 

I honestly really was shaken and hurt and sick and I don't want to deal with banters like that anymore. Really, I wish he'd sayed he just massacred half of Thedas or blew up the Conclave or something. At least that's not triggering content, that's just good old mass murder. /sarcasm

Because I did and I got scaled down during romance scenes! I don't know if it's just a bug or a really ugly, lazy way of not having a separate animation for qunaris. It's sad, because I would really have enjoyed the romance if I could have focused properly instead of screaming in terror at the tiny, strangely proportioned scaled-down version of my tall qunari.

 

I was really sad and put off when I first noticed this. I can only hope they will fix it some day.

I finally finished the game.  Amazing.

 

But on Blackwall.  I never thought I would love a character more than Alistair (yes, I know my name is Kaidan fan ) but Blackwall is it.  He is numero uno now.  Best. Romance. Ever.  I guess I've ruined myself.  How can I replay and romance other people now?

Yeah, I did. Thankfully that seems to be the only scene it happens in.

I knew very early something wasn't right about him - i.e. not sensing any Darkspawn or other Wardens.
But I didn't see THAT coming. No game has made me feel that way yet.

I'm really glad I had him as my first romance for my Cadash.

I had a feeling he wasn't a Grey Warden because he was always SO vague.  But everything else that happened with him I didn't see coming.  I will love this romance till the end of time!

I took him with me for the Adamant quest and thus had him in the Fade, and it sort of clicked that the theories were true when Corypheus basically said he was 'nothing like a Warden.'

Lawd, that was probably the most conflicting thing ever while romancing him. I mean, can you imagine your Inquisitor's feelings there, falling for somebody than learning he's somebody else entirely, and it was all just a lie he was telling himself? Freaky.

Forgave him anyway, though. The kiss in the judgement scene was a bit 'Get a room!' I have to say. :S

Holy crap!  I was totally unspoiled about Blackwall!

I did not see that coming.  A liar.  A murderer.  Just crazy.  I told him that I'd give him to the Wardens after Corypheus was dealt with, but I'm also encouraging him to redeem his name.  I'm hopeful that they will accept him into the order and he can live as a true Warden once this is all taken care of. 

Now I'm definitely leaning towards romancing him as my lady dwarf!

Just popping in to say that I'm midway through the romance (I think?).    Concerning the main, spoilery turn of events:

It seemed very obvious from the badge recovery mission onwards that he wasn't really Blackwall, but that the real Blackwall had died and he'd taken his place.  Whenever Grey Warden-y things came up, he was often super-vague, trying to hide his lack of knowledge.  I didn't guess his particular reason for being so secretive, as I didn't know about who Rainier was or what he'd done.  However, I assumed that he had something to be ashamed of in his old life (probably some military atrocity; I guessed he'd followed an order he shouldn't have, rather than giving one), and had been recruited as a Grey Warden but never actually did the joining.  

 

If I could see it, my Inquisitor could see it, so I wish there'd been an option in the aftermath for her to say: "I knew."  Because I was interpreting her lack of ability to bring up what she'd noticed as her deciding to trust him to tell her in his own good time.  Realistically, I don't see how it could be written to let her say something beforehand, as the very option to do so would spoil players who hadn't guessed.  Hence just the wish for something after his public confession.  I would have found that very satisfying.

 

On the whole, I like his character, and the romance moments so far have been sweet, but overall it seems a little threadbare.  However, it could be that I'm preventing myself from reaching the next steps because of trying to complete tons of quests before moving the main story forwards.
