I finished the game, and thus the romance with Blackwall. ![]()
I've only just gotten to Western approach, so I don't know all the details but,
Blackwall and Sera
Yes, that banter with Dorian was exactly the one I meant.
I haven't come across Dorian's post-Revelations criticism yet, but I heard the critical Solas banter - and, later on, Solas did go on to apologise as well, which I honestly did not expect. Similarly, the apology was rooted in an appreciation of the importance of atonement.
Dorian is pretty awesome about it. He apologizes to Blackwall for making light of him and calls a truce or something and says for what it's worth he thinks Blackwall is a good man and deserves a second chance. It was great. Cassandra on the other hand, Good God, it was terrible she was like, "Address me as Seeker Cassandra, in fact don't even address me at all." :C I didn't test with Vivienne. I knew where that was gonna go.
Could it have been approval gated? I had him maxed out a long time before that, even before we did Wicked Hearts. Or there may be bugs.
I have to admit, I was wondering what would happen if I stuck Cass and Blackwall together. I know that Solas is supposed to apologize eventually - or that he says he understands about atonement, but I haven't seen that happen yet after Solas lashed out at Blackwall. Maybe it happened when I wasn't looking because they were semi-chummy again last night when Solas gave Blackwall a tip on fighting demons.Dorian is pretty awesome about it. Next through will be Cullen for me.
But after that.....
I think it's going to be Blackwall all the way.
It's just.....i dunno.
Plus Dorian's "It must be warm by the fire." comment re: being involved with Blackwall just makes me giggle-blush.
Added: What does Blackwall's tarot card look like if you make him serve the Inquisition (not letting him go free or go to the wardens but continue the lie of living as Blackwall?)
AtreiyaN7, I've just been listening to Cole/Blackwall's banter and had to come and look up the exact wording of the quote you posted as I found it so powerful:
Spoiler
They actually have a TON of great banter that really gives an insight into Blackwall's thoughts, like this one:
Spoiler
Honestly, Blackwall is now probably my favourite character in Inquisition. I've seen people call him boring but I think he probably has more depth than most of the other companions (who I mostly love as well). I haven't finished the game yet but I'm really glad my Inquisitor made the decision to romance him (like there was ever any doubt...that decision was made as soon as his character was first revealed, lol). The romance is complicated and dramatic and more conflicting than I ever anticipated, but, like some others have mentioned, I'm seriously doubting whether I'll ever be able to choose someone else in future playthroughs.
Spoiler
Wow, that was a lot of spoiler tags for a first post, haha.
So glad you found it! Yeah, that dialogue pretty much floored me when I heard it, and Blackwall sounded kind of shaky and pained when he asked Cole to stop. I definitely agree that Blackwall has a lot of depth and that his story and the whole relationship are far more complicated than those of the other companions (short of an Inquisitor who hooks up with Solas...because...reasons *wink wink*).
I'm definitely in the "I can't see myself with any other guy after this" camp - lol. The worst thing is that it's actually making me think about writing fan-fic. *facepalm*

Someone posted it in the tarot card thread...but you can actually see it in the codex itself even if you have romanced him! He's a knight on a griffon (a griffon with a whole lot of eyes, heh). It's card #3 under Characters in the codex.
Hi everyone! It's been some time since I last posted. I hope the character and romance met/exceeded everyone's expectations. ![]()
His character arc turned out much differently than I expected, though not in a bad way. Romance wasn't my favorite but he was very sweet and flirting with him early on was fun.
I've been romancing Blackwall on my second play through. I went into the romance knowing the spoilers but it was still a tangle of emotions when I got to the scene. I was doing okay until I heard Solas tear into Blackwall after the revelation. I was so upset that I logged off! Oh Solas!
Blackwall is an interesting character and a pretty good romance. I really like the tarot card you get for romancing him it's super sweet.
TEWR, yeah, I remember something like that. But I thought it was related to Crestwood questline, which seems to be completely redone from what we've seen in alpha.
Yeah, it seems like they changed a lot of things.
To be honest, part of me suspects that extra year did more harm then good for the main story. but that's me. Not that I dislike the game mind you. I like it. But I feel it had a lot more potential.
But that's enough negativity! Blackwall is awesome, this is all we need to know.
Spoiler
Totally with you on the fanfic thing, haha. I'm slightly ashamed but this character has made such an impression. I still have a ways to go until the end of the game but I'm already trying to imagine the future he and the Inquisitor will have (and not in an idealised "They're going to live happily ever after on a farm with puppies and kittens" way, just wondering how their relationship is going to progress after certain...developments.
Ah, okay, that makes sense with Liddy now - all I really remembered was something about flowers. *smack self* As far as the fan-fic thing goes, I'd probably go into his past more than his present/future - was sort of vaguely planning on using that Cole dialogue that you found as a jumping off point, but until you found the whole thing, I thought I was going to have to play the whole game again and then use FRAPS to make sure I caught it - lol.

Someone started posting the party banter on Youtube, which is great for me as I usually end up missing the first part of a conversation due to concentrating on something else! I just heard one where Viv and Blackwall are actually civil to each other for a couple of seconds, was quite sweet actually, haha. Can't seem to get the hyperlink to work but here's Cole and Blackwall:
And one more quote of Cole-insight: (I promise this is the last one! Also contains spoilers from Cole's personal quest)
Spoiler
They also have quite a lot of funny conversation, and Blackwall basically ends up becoming Cole's grumpy uncle. I never really used
Cole in my party but it sounds like he provides a lot of insight into the other characters. It's a shame some people will never hear it as I think it adds a lot to the game and could probably change people's opinions of a companion they don't like.
Cool - saw a few of those videos a few pages back, probably should have occurred to me to check for a Blackwall-Cole combo, haha. That dialogue is very interesting because...
Anyhow, after we got back, I chatted with him some more at Skyhold. I think if you get to know Cole and try to understand him, it's quite rewarding as well - and I do like his insights into the other characters. It's a pity if people get creeped out by what Cole starts out as because you can really help guide him a lot. I'm glad that Blackwall's like his grumpy uncle, hehe.
Hello, I've just completed revelations and
I punched and banged my head againstmy room's walls, screamed in anger and uttered blasphemiesand now I have a questionSpoiler
thank you
After revelations, I had two quests show up on my war table. One was the triangle shaped piece, that took 1 influence. The other was one of the flag type quests that take time instead of influence (I think it took about 3 minutes for this one, approximately).
I really wish we could name our saves!! So missing that option.
I 100% agree with all the posts on this page about how deep Blackwall is. People who thinks he is boring needs to listen to the conversations and spend time with him in their party. But different strokes for different folks I guess.
I went into the game fully expecting to hate Cole and Iron Bull. I was wrong on both counts. I'm glad I gave them a chance!
I am doing a Cullen romance atm. I have to avoid Blackwall like the plague to not ruin it though
All the rest from now on will Blackwall. ![]()
(I miss naming saves too)!
I have to admit, I was wondering what would happen if I stuck Cass and Blackwall together. I haven't gotten the Solas banter yet but would love to hear this. I think I heard from Sera about Blackwall when you talk to her in her cute little room instead of banter. I like how some of them are willing to be forgiving.
I think Cassandra might cool off eventually...she was pretty angry with Varric for a while and said some harsh things to him after the Hawke reveal, but they did make up later. As for Vivienne, if you ask for her opinion of the other companions back at Skyhold, she does have a line about Blackwall (since it's random, you'll probably have to keep asking her until it pops up). She basically says that Blackwall is a lucky man to have been taken back by the Inquisitor after what happened and that few would have forgiven him.
Yeah Cassandra is like that with EVERYONE which is sometimes funny (there's a convo with Solas about it) except the time I heard the exchange the first time I was kinda mad at Cass acting like a queen about it. I just wanted my Inquisitor to turn around and tell her to shut it and that it was MY choice that Blackwall stayed and that anyone who is willing to die for the Inquisition deserves another chance in my Inner Circle!
Don't get me wrong. The first time I learned about Blackwall's past, I was very conflicted but I also believe some people can change and Blackwall deserved that chance.
I kind of do expect Viv to eviscerate him as well, and I'll probably stick them together at some point to see what happens. Cole, of course, is the one companion not beating Blackwall up over things. He and Cole started talking last night, and then Blackwall asked if Cole wanted to lay into him as well, like the others. Cole, of course, wouldn't do that - and he had this line that made it sound like...
Vivienne and I have a love and hate relationship. I adore her character design and some conversations with her but sometimes what comes out of her mouth is pure meanness. I remember a particular banter where Viv and Dorian were making fun of Blackwall really bad. I was angry at both of them but then after the stuff happened Dorian came out and apologized for being a dick about it and I have another reason to love Dorian to death. As for Cole I don't think I felt strongly about him either way in the beginning but he grew on me during his personal quest and now I like him a lot.
Spoiler
I have not gotten this banter! I feel like at some point the situation got out Blackwall's hands and he was not capable of anything but running away. He will forever live with what he did, it's his sin to carry but at the same time he became someone that was ready to give his life for trying to be better. He did go about it the wrong way but I can understand why he thought Blackwall should live, since he was the better man and Rainier should die since he was a coward and a liar.

I've been waffling over it - I keep thinking, well, maybe I should try Cullen or Solas at minimum...then I go wandering around with Blackwall and some banter will come up, and then I'm like *siiiiiiiiiiigh* I can't give up my bearded warrior man for either of them. I actually do like Bull, not to leave him out, but he's kind of like my bro/drinking buddy atm (well, bro #2 because Varric is bro #1).

If you mean the demon-hunting tip, Solas starts saying that within the first 30 heartbeats (I think) that you'll know how to defeat a demon. Blackwall more or less says he was hoping for more useful information. Solas points out that demons don't change their tactics very much (presumably because the average Fade spirit/demon can't really learn anything new). Blackwall acknowledges that this actually is useful information, and then Solas adds "Also, don't die." or something to that effect. As for the tongue-lashing by Solas, well...ouch on that - you might need a fireproof suit while listening to that one.
In combat with Blackwall: "One less to worry about"
